    I dedicate this book with deepest love and gratitude to my best friend and wife Janice. Her unfailing encouragement and support during our life together have been a tremendous source of strength, joy, passion, and profound contentment. I am truly blessed to have her and my two daughters, Lauren and Alise, and Alise’s husband, Brett, in my life.

    An inscription on a church in Sussex, England, purported to have been written in 1670 reads as follows:

    A task without a vision is drudgery;

    A vision without a task is but a mere dream;

    A vision with a task is the hope of the world.

    A must-read for anyone with a mortgage or plans to retire. It questions our traditional views and lays the foundation for all of us to improve our finances.

    I am where I am today because of people who have come into my life and choices I have made in response to circumstances in my life. I was adopted into a wonderful, loving family by parents who made life safe, adventurous, and blessed. I was taught that the best investment you could ever make was to spend time with your family. The best legacy you could ever leave was a strong faith in God. My parents modelled this calling and I am eternally grateful.

    My father was an early influence in my financial services career; in the beginning, as a mentor, and later as a business partner. He didn’t always understand my fascination with thinking outside the box, but gave me much encouragement to do so.

    My wife, Janice, has been my greatest source of joy and love throughout our 35 years together. She has taught me the true meaning of contentment, and has always encouraged me to reach for my dreams while keeping my feet on solid ground. She is the true rock in our family and my two wonderful children, Lauren and Alise, are a testament to her unwavering commitment, love, and devotion to her family. We are truly blessed to have her in our lives.

    My financial journey incorporated many diverse and interesting paths which ultimately led me to where I am today. In my earlier days, I always seemed to be a little restless–never quite satisfied with where I was or what I had. I would set higher goals for myself, both personally and professionally. Some would call that drive and a positive trait. For me it fostered discontent.

    I was teaching the basics of financial planning to the brokers, and was implementing the principles in my own financial life. But I wasn’t convinced that the picture of a more secure financial future displayed on the cover of the box could be achieved with these particular puzzle pieces; some pieces were missing, some were the wrong size, and others belonged to a different puzzle altogether.

    I was introduced to the book Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki, and the pieces started to transform themselves and fit together. One of the missing pieces in the puzzle was cash flow. That book changed my life, and is a must-read for anyone interested in gaining financial literacy.

    My next ah ha moment came during a webinar with Robin J. Elliott, the guru of joint ventures. Robin has focused on using joint venture leverage to help thousands of business owners increase their sales and profits. www.leverageadvantage.com
