      Chapter 1

      Katie awoke one sunny morning feeling so excited. It was three days before her seventh birthday! She jumped out of bed and put on her fuzzy pink slippers. She made her bed quickly and ran to the kitchen.

      Good morning, Mommy! What are we having for breakfast? she asked as she hopped up on her chair.

      Good morning, Katie. We’re having your favourite, her mother replied. Brussels sprouts!

      Eww! Brussels sprouts for breakfast? Katie whined, sticking her tongue out.

      Okay, how about cereal then? her mother asked, bringing Katie a bowl of cereal and a spoon.

      Yes, please! Katie answered in relief. She didn’t like Brussels sprouts.

      Guess what, Mommy? Katie asked as she munched her cereal. Grandma taught me a new way to count the number of sleeps before my birthday! She said we could call them dodos.

      A dodo? her mother asked.

      Yup! A dodo! Katie answered proudly. Grandma said that’s a French word for going to sleep.

      Wow, Katie, Mommy said, that means you can speak two languages now.

      I know! Katie answered proudly. I bet I could skip a few days of school. Maybe even today?

      Nice try, but I don’t think so, sweetie, her mother laughed.

      Fine, Katie sighed. Then, she smiled brightly. Still, it’s only three more dodos until my birthday!

      Katie was about to take another bite of her cereal when she heard a loud noise coming from her bedroom. Boing! Boing! Boing! It was so loud Katie dropped her spoon.
