    A record of life for those that come after, My Life, Clinician, Researcher, Campaigner is Robert Elkeles' life story up to present day. Written with detail and some gentle humour, Robert describes his early life, from childhood through school medical school life as a junior doctor and then consultant. Remarking on how things have changed and the similarities that medical professionals will still see today, the story continues into retirement.  


    This is, ultimately, a life story and there is plenty of life within the pages. Robert confesses to the reader how shy he was at school contrasting with how he was then able to campaign in his hospital and outside against changes in health care which he thought were damaging. He deals with some of the upsides and downsides of private medical practice, as well as his research into the complications of diabetes and how he raised the money to undertake this. Away from his profession, he relates how he dealt with a sister with learning difficulties and how his successful and happy marriage both came about and has stayed together. Ultimately, the reader is left contemplating the state of today and how we can progress from here. Because after all, the voice of experience is a voice we should listen to. An ideal read for anyone looking to be lost in an interesting life story.

    Robert Elkeles spent forty years as a consultant physician involved in patient care and research into the complications of diabetes. He campaigned against the internal market reforms to the NHS. In retirement he has served as trustee to two hospices and chairs a local hospital charity. He is based in London.
