Several years ago on a trip to Europe I stood in Hyde Park looking for the Lanesborough Hotel. I was particularly interested to see this building because it was the original St George’s Hospital. The death certificate and family stories of my original Australian ancestor told of how, on his return to London in 1863, he had collapsed in Hyde Park and been taken to St George’s where he was pronounced dead. To see the old signage on the side of the building and know that this was the location was enough for this family historian. I had previously visited the Great Northern Cemetery (now New Southgate Cemetery), and received some exceptional assistance there, to see the general area where my great great grandfather had been interred (now reclaimed for another denomination), so was satisfied that I had gone a long way towards solving some family mysteries.
