THE LADY WITH THE LAMP

WORDS NEIL JONES
Florence Nightingale loathed the “buzz fuzz” of celebrity that surrounded her name, dismissive of “all that ministering angel nonsense” that glamourised nursing. So what would she have made of the country- and world-wide celebrations of the bicentenary of her birth this year?
Hopefully she would approve because her story is being explored beyond the sentimental Victorian image of the ‘Lady with the Lamp’ tending to injured soldiers in the Crimean War (1854–56). London’s Florence Nightingale Museum is leading the way in #Nightingale2020 events with its exhibition Nightingale in 200 Objects, People and Places: (until March 2021).
