A true English eccentric with a unique personality, the Marquess of Bath was as colourful as his murals and as intriguing as Longleat House, his magnificent 16th-century stately home in Wiltshire. But the larger-than-life aristocrat has become the highest-profile British victim of the coronavirus pandemic to date.

Alexander Thynn, who had type 2 diabetes, was admitted to the Royal United Hospital in Bath on 28 March, where he tested positive for Covid-19. He died a week later.
