    Jason - Savina Joyce

    Chapter One

    Jason

All Jason needed was an open road, his bike, and his bag in exactly that order. If he lost everything else and he still could get out on an open road, then he was still doing okay. He spent years tied to his job, and the first thing he did was look for freedom. Since his early retirement, he'd been on the road riding to places he always wanted to see. He didn’t want to stay in one place for too long. This lifestyle suited him. He didn't have any pets, and he definitely didn't have a woman. He didn't have time for frivolities, and that's exactly what women were.

His travels landed him in Newport this time around. Rhode Island didn’t have the best roads, but Newport wasn't so bad. The scenery was amazing. He wasn’t planning on sticking around long enough for the salt air to rust his bike, but he planned to enjoy his trip for the time being. The first thing he planned to do was find a bar.

There were plenty of bars to choose from. Jason chose a quiet one, grabbed a beer, and settled in on their patio. He kicked up his feet and looked around. This was a nice place. Ambiance was important. He was minding his business and having a drink when he heard a woman cry out. She was cornered near the patio fence by what looked like two douchebag frat dudes. They were being way too aggressive for Jason to let it slide. He stood up, downed his beer, and headed in their direction. At six feet two inches tall, Jason was big enough to use his size to his advantage when necessary, Jason shouldered one of the men out of the way. He didn’t bother making eye contact with the other. The horror stricken woman looked up at him with pleading eyes.

    Is everything alright here, miss?

I just want to go home, she said.

Well, I'm sure these two gentlemen don't have a problem with that. He was shoved hard from behind. Probably by the guy he had pushed out of the way.

Why don’t you mind your business pal. We're just talking to the lady.

Well, she didn't seem to like your conversation. Women normally don’t look afraid when they talk to you, Jason said. He turned around and looked the guy up and down. On second thought, looking at that face, I bet they do.

The man's face contorted with rage. He swung at Jason and missed. Jason punched him square on the jaw. The jerk went down. His friend started yelling, and Jason heard more footsteps headed his way. He swung around to face the second contender. When his fist connected with the man’s nose, Jason felt a sharp pain in his ribcage. The little prick stabbed him. Luckily, as the force of Jason's punch took him off his feet, he took the knife with him. Jason gripped his side while the girl screamed.

It's okay, sweetheart, he said, holding his hand over the wound. Do you think you'll be okay to make it home safely?

She nodded numbly as she crept back toward the bar. Jason stumbled out of the patio and headed for his bike. He was going to need a hospital. Luckily the state wasn't too big, there should be a hospital close by. He just had to hold it together and make it there. He had been in stressful situations like this before. He was confident that he could pull it off. The ride to the hospital was a bit of a blur. He made it to the emergency room door and left his bike at the entrance. He stumbled through the sliding doors. The receptionist looked up expectantly. She was talking to him, but Jason couldn’t make out the words.

Stab wounds, he said, pulling at his blood-soaked shirt.

He collapsed in a heap on the ground and everything went dark.

    Chapter Two

    Stacy

Stacy was nearing the end of her shift at the ER. She was beat. Her feet felt like they weighed a thousand pounds. Her eyelids were heavy. She stifled another yawn and regretted passing on that extra cup of coffee. If there was ever a shift that needed coffee, it was this one. Summer was always busier at the hospital. Outdoor activities led to outdoor injuries. From camping trips to fireworks, she had seen it all.

She thought about her friend India and wondered if she should have become a vet too. At least when you're working on animals, they couldn't talk back. Best of all, they didn’t make the same stupid decisions that people make. Stacy loved helping people, but she couldn't understand why they took so many unnecessary risks. Ninety percent of the people she saw in the emergency rooms were there because of accidents they created themselves.

This is exactly why she was so uptight about her cousin Thorn bashing his brains out on football fields for half of his life. She had been so relieved when he went into physical therapy instead. Clearly, it was working out for the best for him too. Now he had a fulfilling job and thriving relationship with Gabriella. Stacy could barely catch him when he was alone.

Stacy, on the other hand, was still single. She tried having relationships, but it never seemed to work out. Every guy she dated either wanted to bag a hot nurse or they wanted to date her because they liked to do things that eventually got them hurt. The last guy she dated was into cliff jumping. Stacy went through enough emotional turmoil fixing people up at work every day. She didn't want to
