    Entertaining The Lady Next Door

It was the end of the month and thanks to my roommate I couldn’t afford to pay my rent. I searched frantically for the jar where I kept my savings but could not find it. I didn’t think it was a coincidence that my roommate Pete had just gone missing at the same time my money had.

It was a whole hour before I came out of denial. Pete had clearly run away and robbed me blind leaving me to pay both our rents when I was not prepared to do so.  I had no idea what I was going to tell my landlady.

Just as if she had been summoned, I heard her ring the doorbell. I knew it was her because she always called your name right after a ring. That way you would know exactly who was at your door.

Jeremy. It’s me. Open up. It’s time to pay your rent, she yelled. Each sentence was punctuated by a ring.

Coming Miss Harley, I called back.

I had briefly thought of pretending I wasn’t home but that was no way to deal with a problem. I would have to explain my situation to Miss Harley and hope we could come up with an agreement that might give me more time to get the money.

I sucked in a deep breath. Miss Harley was a tough nut to crack. I had to get used to the idea of getting kicked out of the apartment by noon. People had been kicked out of her building for much less.

Gathering my courage, I went to open the door. Miss Harley didn’t wait to be invited in. She pushed past me and walked right into the living room.

She stood there with one hand on her waist and the other stretched out expectantly. Normally, this was the part where I would place an envelope of cash in her hand and she would then count the money. This time however, I stared dumbly at her hand.

Hurry up Jeremy. You know the drill, she said impatiently.

I looked at her face and through the thick rimmed glasses, I could see that her eyes were squinted.

I’ve run into some trouble Miss Harley, I said carefully.

Damn it Jeremy. You’ve lived here four years and you’ve always paid on time. Sometimes you even pay in advance.

    I know Miss Harley. It’s just that…

Did you get fired? Is that what happened? She asked not waiting for me to finish.

    No. My roommate…

I knew it. I had a bad feeling about him from the time you introduced him to me, she interrupted again.

I know and I should have listened to you, I admitted.

Miss Harley had been very vocal about her feelings for Pete ever since she had met him. She hadn’t been afraid to voice her opinions even to his face. Looking back, I wish I had listened to her. Maybe then I wouldn’t be in this mess.

Yes you should have. Look who’s crazy now, she said proudly.

I guess that would be me.

Yes it is. Now what did he do.  He can’t make his end of the rent?

    It’s worse than that actually.

He ran off didn’t he. I saw him leave yesterday with his suitcase. He told me he had to visit his sick mother. I knew he could be lying but I didn’t stop him.

Yes he did run off. With my share of the rent.

Miss Harley’s eyes widened in disbelief. Not even in her wildest dreams could she have predicted anything like that would happen.

    That good for nothing…

I know Miss Harley. I’ve been cussing him out all morning. That’s why I need you to give me some time. Just a little to come up with the money.

How sure am I that you won’t run away like your good for nothing roommate?

How long have you known me Miss Harley? Have I ever caused you any kind of trouble. I always pay on time, I haven’t caused any damages. Why would that all change now?

She looked at me as if trying to think of the answer. I held my breath. Miss Harley could be a bit unpredictable. She was also never known to play favorites when it came to her money. I might be one of her oldest tenants but she would not waste time kicking me out.

I’ll tell you what Jeremy. I’ll make you a deal.

You will? I asked surprised that she was willing to even talk about this.  However, I knew it was still too soon to count this as a victory.

Of course. You’ve always been one of my best tenants. I don’t see why we can’t come to an agreement.

What do you have in mind?

Well I have this niece that’s moving into the city. She’ll be taking the apartment right next to yours.

You want me to help her move in? I asked feeling a bit confused.

Oh no. That’s already done, she said waving the idea away as if it was ridiculous to her.

Then how do you want me to help out?

I’ll make you a deal. If you show her around, keep her entertained and happy, you only have to pay half the months rent.

It seemed like a good deal. Too good the more I thought of it. There had to be something more to this than what she was letting on. From the huge smile on her face, I was right.

    What’s the catch?

    The catch?

I don’t imagine you would be letting me a random man around your niece if there wasn’t something up with her?

You’re a sharp one aren’t you Jeremy. I’ve always liked that about you.

What is it then? Is she crazy?

Just a tiny bit, she replied while holding two of her fingers close together.

How much is a tiny bit? I asked concerned. I didn’t want to be stuck with a crazy person until I paid the money I owed Miss Harley.

She’s been known to have a few mental breakdowns.

    That seems intense.

Don’t worry about it. They’re only violent some of the time.

She gets violent? my voice went up a notch.

I’m sure you can handle it. You’re not afraid of a little biting are you?

Feeling overwhelmed by all this information, I sat down on the couch.

How long do I have to do this? I asked.

Just for a month. Till she can adjust to life in the city.

And if I don’t agree to this?

I think you know what will happen if you don’t, she said smiling crookedly. For a moment I felt a could see a glimpse of her niece in Miss Harley.

Why aren’t you doing it anyway? She’s your niece after all, I asked curiously.

I don’t want to get stuck with a crazy person Jeremy. That’s why I’m having you do it, she said rolling her eyes.

I’ll see you tomorrow then Jeremy, she said before walking out of the apartment.

Miss Harley didn’t even wait to know whether or not I agreed with her condition. That was probably because she knew I didn’t really have a choice.

I wasn’t going to let her kick me it of the building because I was afraid to hang out with her niece. Besides, I would get to pay only half the rent if I agreed. That seems like a sweet deal. However, that was also a sign of just how crazy the woman was if Miss Harley was willing to pay me to babysit her.

I told myself that it was only for a month. The time would be over before I even knew it and then I could avoid her if I chose to. All I needed to do was survive. Besides, how bad could it be.

Miss Harley’s niece moved into the apartment next door the next morning. At that time, I’d had the whole night to think on my decision. To be honest, I was terrified. However, there was no way I could get out of this. Not if I wanted to keep living in the building.

I’d tried to think of a way I could quickly come up with the money just so I could avoid the lady. However, it was not possible.

I was the kind of person who had his money placed into use as soon as I was paid. I had put some of my money into a savings account and had poured the rest into my expenses. Pete running off with my share of the rent had left me in a bad place especially since I couldn’t access the money I had in my savings account.

I was just deciding how I was going
