    Babysitter On A Hot Night

When Myles had first met Amber, he hadn’t liked her. He thought she was loud and entitled. Looking back, the situation probably called for her to act the way she did. He could still remember her in the reception of the babysitting service causing a commotion.

What do you mean you don’t have anyone? This is an emergency Leah, the beautiful brunette had yelled.

I know. I’m so sorry Amber. There’s just nothing we can do, the secretary tried to explain.

Figure it out. I was told last week that I was going to get a sitter tonight. You can’t go back on your word.

There was a terrible mix up and your sitter got scheduled to sit for another family.

Then get her back for me.

    I’m afraid that’s not possible.

Make it possible or I’m launching a complaint against your business.

Calm down Amber. There’s no need to be so rush. I’m sure we can come to some kind of agreement.

    You better, she warned.

Leah the receptionist started to go through her computer probably in an effort to make her happy.

At this point, Amber walked across the room and sat on one of the chairs. Myles who was seated next to her paid even more attention to his magazine. He didn’t want it to seem like he had been eavesdropping though with the way she had been yelling it would have been impossible not to.

What are you here for? she asked.

Me? he asked in surprised looking up from his magazine.

I don’t see anyone else here.

Oh. I’m here on an interview.

Good for you. I hope you do a better job than the people here are.

I’m sure they’ll get you sorted out. These things happen.

They do but it never feels good when it happens to you.

Myles nodded as if in agreement. The truth was that the last thing he wanted was to have this conversation. He was nervous about his interview. He had a lot riding on it.

Having finished college a few years ago, he’d had a very hard time finding a job. It turned out not many IT companies were looking to hire.

It was frustrating when ever since he had been in school, he had been sold this idea that nothing could ever go wrong as long as he put in the work. He had done just that and graduated at the top of his class.

When he was job hunting, Myles didn’t understand why he just couldn’t land a job. He was smart, charming and incredibly handsome. The latter had gotten him through too many tough spots.

It was only when one interviewer graciously pulled him aside one day that it had all made sense. The college he had gone too had never been accredited and it was costing him opportunities. No one wanted to hire an IT specialist from an untrusted institution.

Broke and desperate, Myles had decided the best thing would be for him to do was find a low paying job. Something that would keep him occupied until he could decide what to do about his degree. There wasn’t much since he wasn’t well off and suing would cost him a lot.

I’m Amber by the way, she introduced herself.

    I’m Myles, he replied.

I really need a sitter tonight. I need a break away from my kids or else I will go insane, Amber had continued.

I can’t imagine how difficult that is.

I mean I love my kids but sometimes you just want to take a breather, you know?

Myles nodded again in agreement. As if realising she’d said something ridiculous, she started to laugh.

Look who I’m talking to. You probably were a kid not too long ago, she said chuckling.

Amber, the receptionist called her back.

Myles was glad for the interruption. He had no idea what to say to Amber’s comment.

Did you find me a sitter? she asked.

    I’m afraid I didn’t.

    Damn it Leah.

But I did get you two free sessions.

What good will that do me now?

    I’m really sorry.

I’m going to have to cancel my plans.

    There’s always next time.

It’s easy for you to say. You’re engaged.

    I’m sure he’ll understand.

    Sorry I yelled at you

It’s okay. You’re upset. Besides, I deserved that.

Myles could tell that this conversation was going into new territory. While he was amazed at how they could go back to being friends so fast, he still had an interview to finish. He walked up to the desk to speak to Leah.

Excuse me. Is that interview still on? He asked.

Yes it is. Just give me a few minutes then I can test you.

You’re giving the interview? he asked in surprise.

Don’t look so surprised. I know a few things about computers. I think.

    Okay.

Myles knew that if he blew this, he would be an idiot. Leah clearly knew nothing about computers. She would be dying to get this over with. She’d probably hire the first person she found. Myles was going to rely heavily on his looks to pass.

Hey. I have an idea, Amber said suddenly.

    What is it? Leah asked.

What if you hire this guy so he can babysit for me?

That’s a terrible idea, Leah and Myles both said at the same time.

    Come one I’m desperate.

We barely know this man. He could be an axe murderer for all we know, Leah said.

    Ouch, Myles complained.

    Sorry, Leah quickly apologized.

He seems like a nice guy. We’ve had a while conversation with him.

I don’t know anything about kids, he added.

You’ll learn on the job. Besides I’ll only be away for a few hours max.

He doesn’t even work for us Amber, Leah said.

Then you can consider it his interview.

I’m not interviewing for a spot as a babysitter, he pointed out.

Whatever it is can’t be too different from this.

IT is completely different and certainly more sophisticated than looking after kids, he said.

The two women burst out into laughter. Myles didn’t like being the joke.

He's clearly never been around children, Leah said.

I doubt that it would be that hard, Myles said.

The two women started to laugh at him again.

    What? Myles demanded.

You know what Leah. You were right. It’s a bad idea. I don’t know why I suggested it, Amber said.

I told you, Leah said knowingly.

I think I can look after kids. It’s really not hard, Myles interrupted. Another round of laughter ensued.

    Hey. Stop that, he complained.

I’m sure you’re a sweet guy Myles but there is no way you would know what to do with a child, Leah said.

She’s right. Just stick to IT, Amber added.

Myles did not like children. In fact, he was glad that he didn’t have to babysit Amber’s kids. However, his pride just wouldn’t let him go. He was determined to prove that he could easily do it.

You know what? I’ll do it. I’ll look after the kids, he said.

What? both women said in unison.

You heard me. I’ll babysit for you.

I don’t know Myles. It seems like a bad idea, Amber said.

A minute ago you were begging me to do it and now you think it’s a bad idea. Come on woman where’s you spirit of adventure, he taunted.

He’s mocking you Amber. You better take up the challenge, Leah said.

Really Leah? You were the one trying to talk me out of this, Amber complained.

I like a good bet, Leah said with a shrug.

Fine. We’ll do it. You can come by my house at six thirty. I’ll text you the address. I still don’t know you so I’m going to have my neighbour check on you occasionally until I’m back, Amber said giving in.

    Deal, Myles said.

    They shook hands in agreement.

Do a great job Myles and we’ll skip the interview, Leah assured him.

He nodded his head in agreement. He couldn’t help but feel that he was being stupid. He knew nothing about kids yet he was willing to put his job in the line for this. Just because he couldn’t take a joke.

Myles was at Amber’s house when regret started to set in. He had gone as far as to search how to take care of kids on Google yet he felt completely unprepared. He almost turned back but realized that this was his interview.

After taking in a few deep breaths, Myles rang the doorbell. It was few rings before the door opened to reveal a well dressed Amber.

You made it, she sounded surprised.

I half expected you to make a run for it. Honestly I wouldn’t blame you if you did. I mean I would have.

Well I take my Job seriously.

Okay, she replied with a raised eyebrow.

    Come on in,
