    Chapter One

Matt drove carefully down into Abergavenny, cheerfully listening to the early morning music playing on the radio. It was early in the morning, and the sun was just about to rise, scattering its bright rays across the road in a golden aura. Matt goes through his mental checklist over and over until it becomes embedded in his mind. He had already plotted out the route to get to the undiscovered cavern since his father had given him all the information he could assemble from his past years, including old, handmade maps marked with circles with felt-tip pens. For days, Matt studied the maps with a heavy interest.

It was all in his head now, safely tucked inside, ready to be called upon if need be. Matt reduced his speed and turned right into a small cul-de-sac, littered with semi-detached houses on either side. He slowly drove along the winding road and pulled up outside Lauren's house. He thought about alerting her with his car horn, but it was still too early in the day, so he texted instead.

Within a few minutes, Lauren came out carrying her large backpack hunched on her back. Matt hurried out of the vehicle and carefully took the heavy rucksack into the boot of his car.

    'Morning,' Lauren kindly said.

'Morning to you, too,' Matt said while throwing off the heavy backpack. 'Shall we head on up, then?'

He nodded, and they both jumped into the car, rubbing their hands together from the early morning cold.

Matt reversed back, spun the car around, and backtracked down again through the winding road.

'So what did your parents think about our trip?' Matt asked.

'They can't get their heads around it, and they question why I would want to go down an old dank cave. I'll be so glad when I move out of there.'

'So have you found a place yet?'

'No, not yet. I'm thinking about moving in with a few people from university, but I can't find a place yet.'

'I'm sure you'll find something.' Matt smiled.

'Thanks, but I'm not dwelling on it too much.'

'Just put it out of your mind for now,' Matt suggested.

'Did you get any sleep last night?' Lauren asked while rubbing her hands together.

'No, not really. I'm just full of excitement.'

    'Yeah, me too.'

'Let's hope that everything goes as planned. Have you got the equipment I told you to get?'

'Yep, and a few extras,' Lauren replied.

Matt remained focused on the road ahead as Lauren listed off her equipment that lay in the boot of the car. The half-hour's drive quickly passed as they drove up in silence while Lauren took a quick nap. Matt was now alone with his thoughts, along with the quiet background noise of the early morning radio, as he continued to drive up the desolate motorway.

His mind wondered. Thinking back, Matt remembered that when he was young, his father used to tell him stories about the cave he had ventured into along with his small group of friends. Different nights came with a unique story, and as the young Matt lay down to sleep, he would dream of being within the cave himself, exploring the unknown and imagining what secrets lurked within.

'Are we there yet?' mumbled Lauren.

'Nearly,' Matt replied without taking his eyes off the road.

'So you heard any more from Jess?' he asked.

'No, nothing since last night. She says she's still coming, but I don't know.' She replies while wiping her mouth.

'I'm still in shock that they're still together, since-' Lauren cut him off.

'I just can't figure them two out.'

They were now coming up a small, narrow road with potholes scattered along the forgotten path. Matt leans over the steering wheel, carefully navigating his way around the wide pockets along the narrow lane.

'Is this the only way up?' asked Lauren while holding tightly to the door's handle.

'Yeah, but we're nearly there,' Matt replied.

He again focused on the uneven road as they now met a steep hill, and he increased his speed. His pace tapered off as they reached the top. The two of them paused, staring at the fertile land that spread out before them. Large green mountains surrounded them, along with deep green grass as far as the eye could see. The sun had risen high into the sky, scattering its golden aura on the
