Unsatisfied One Night - Tina Long

    Fun

    Christmas with The Cleaning Lady

James had not been looking forward to spending the holidays with his family. They were short-sighted and their constant judgement of his decisions made them hard to get along with. However, they were still family and seeing that he had nowhere else to be, he chose to travel up county to be with them. Besides, he wouldn’t hear the end of it if he didn’t make an appearance. He’d made the mistake once and got an earful from his grandmother who had a skill for relaying the harshest of criticisms in not so flowery words.

It was snowing lightly when James got to the airport. The place was filled with hundreds of people who were all eager to get home to their loved ones. He only wished he could share in their joy.

By the time it was time for him to board his plane, it was snowing very heavily and a storm was coming. It came as no surprise when the airline decided to cancel their flights. Nevertheless, the news was met with anger.

James knew he should have been made happy by the news. He had the perfect excuse not to go home. However, he had a feeling that his grandmother wouldn’t see it that way.

What annoyed James the most was that he had spent much of his valuable time preparing to travel. He hated it when people wasted his time. On top of that, he had sent all of his staff home and that meant he would have to clean up after himself for the next few weeks. He loathed the idea. James was a proud man and so full of himself that he believed his time was suited to much more important things.

James wasn’t up for the task of arguing with the airline staff as everyone else had chosen to do. It simply made no difference. It was pointless and he was not going to engage in a pointless task. He felt that he would rather go home and make himself a nice hot mug of black coffee before reading his copy of the science journal.

James went home fully satisfied that he had something to do. He could never bare the thought of being idle. He took a taxi home already feeling excited at the prospect of spending the night alone as opposed as to being crammed between two people in a plane. The storm was getting worse so the driver had to hurry to avoid getting stuck in an unfamiliar neighborhood and having to ask for help from some stranger.

As the cab neared his apartment building, James noticed something strange. From a few miles away, he could see his apartment on the third floor. He squinted his eyes to get a better look just to be sure he wasn’t mistaken. As it turned out he wasn’t.

From the outside looking in, James could see that his bedroom light was on. The first assumption by anyone was that he had forgotten to turn off the lights when he left. But James wasn’t just anyone. He was very careful with everything and had never once slipped up as far as his memory went.

Are you getting out or not? the driver asked rudely.

It dawned on James that he had stopped in front of the building.

Oh yes. Of course, he said sticking his hands into his pocket to retrieve his wallet. He drew out some money and handed it over to the driver.

His eyes were still on his bedroom window so the process went on longer than it needed to be. This in turn ended with the driver being very annoyed with him.

Would you please hurry up sir. I have to get home in five minutes and that won’t be possible with you wasting my time, he said angrily though none of it got James’ attention.

Though James did not know it, this particular driver had given him a ride a few times and knew him well enough to know that James didn’t care about anything unless it concerned him.

The storm’s getting worse by the minute. If this keeps up, I might have to come stay with you until it dies down. Who knows how long that will take? he said sighing in exasperation.

His words had the desired effect and James swerved his head to face him.

    What? he asked in disbelief.

He was astounded to find that the driver was not joking. He rummaged through his wallet for some cash and quickly handed it to him.

Here. Go home, he said practically shoving it into his hand.

This is too much money sir.

    I don’t care. Take it.

My wife will be so happy to know that there are still good people in this world.

Go home and enjoy your time with your wife.

Thank you again sir, he said driving away. He chuckled at how predictable some people could be.

The light through the window was momentarily forgotten as James stood watching the car leave. He was almost afraid that the driver would come back and stay with him anyway.

Satisfied that he was gone, he turned his attention back to the building. To his surprise there were now two lights instead of one. He was baffled. He quickly racked his brain to try and remember if it had just come on or he had missed it before.

The thing with James was that he hardly ever missed a thing. He was now certain that there was an intruder in his home.
