Choice Methods and Theory on Chinese Kungfu - Xiaogang Wu
Preface
This is a book on the choice practice methods of Chinese Kungfu(功夫gongfu in Chinese mandarin) and the academic theory of Qigong Study in order to explain its mechanisms. Among the methods, some have been in practice for more than ten years and others for more than twenty or thirty years by me. Most of the methods are part of the Chine¬se Kungfu methods that have been taught for nine years in New York by the author of the book.
Chinese civilization has a history of more than 5,000 years. Chinese Kungfu was an essential and core practice to the traditional Chinese people. The practice of Kungfu overtime gave birth to Taoist philosophy (Taohsüeh in Wade-giles Romanization道學daoxue), which is the first major philosophy to appear in China. The school to keep and teach the philosophy is called the Taoist School (Taochia道家daojia). People are familiar with the term of Taoism usually. However, it is important to differentiate the term from Taoist philosophy or Taoist School. Taoism is a religious organization that took a part of elements from Taoist philosophy as the source of the religious doctrines. The first Taoism group appeared in the 2th century of the Christian era in the middle of China. According to the ancient Chinese documents, Taoist philosophy appeared in the time of Spring-Fall and the Warring States period ( 770~221BC). So, the history of Taoism is therefore shorter than Taoist Philosophy 1,000 years more. Because Taoist Philosophy was the first major philosophy to appear in China, Taoist Philosophy became the basis for Chinese culture. Thus, we can say that Chinese culture is the same as the Taoist philosophy culture that is called Tao Culture(道統文化). It was from following this culture that the ancient Chinese built its civilization.
