Slamming the book shut while careful to keep her finger between the pages to mark her place, she looked up to find a Winter Guard peering down at her. His uniform was pristine—it reminded Evangeline of a nutcracker doll.

You know Jubilee’s father has given me permission to be here, Evangeline countered, annoyed.

There’s a party, ma’am, you should be there, Asher replied cooly.

My attendance is not required anywhere. Evangeline turned back to her book, opening it again.

The lights in the library were dim enough that people wandering the hallways of the Winter Palace wouldn’t take notice. It gave her just enough light to read by, though it tinged the pages of the perfectly preserved book a deep yellow, making her eyes strain slightly.
