Kelsie Calloway

Kelsie Calloway is a romance author from the beautiful state of Kansas (no, it's not flat!) She spends her mornings drinking coffee and writing books, and her evenings guzzling margaritas with whatever poor soul she can rope into getting chips and queso with her.She loves bearded men and plants, both of which she keeps around the house for aesthetics. And one to take out the trash on Tuesdays, that's the deal.Life is always a little crazy, but Kelsie believes that you can always slip away for a few minutes into a book and find a little calm. She tries to write about everyday people. The curvy girls, the blue-collar boys, police officers, cowboys, and more. But occasionally a billionaire slips past and makes her toes curl. It's all fiction, but it's what she loves, and she hopes you love it, too!If you have any questions or just want to chat, reach out to Kelsie at kelsiecalloway@gmail.com.

    Firefighter Love - Kelsie Calloway

    JAMES

    I don’t know why I feel anxious.

    Well, yes I do.

Standing behind the counter in a dark red smock and wearing her hair in a high pony is the woman I’ve loved since I was twelve years old. Madison smiles at each of her customers as though she’s happy to be here, as if she can’t imagine being anywhere else. I like to think her kind, good-natured attitude towards all people—even the difficult ones—is one of the reasons why I fell in love with her all those years ago.

I get in line with all the other patrons at Bean There and wait for my turn, slowly sizing up the competition around me. She has a decently attractive coworker working the window and there’s a somewhat older man sitting at one of the tables who’s eyeing her down like a piece of meat. Madison’s gaze never wanders from the person in front of her. Her smile never wavers as she treats each of them like family.

Coming back to Springfield was never in the cards for me. I’d moved on with my life, trained to become a firefighter, and added fifty pounds of muscle to my scrawny body. When I left Springfield, Madison was just starting at Bean There. Now she’s the manager and I’m a firefighter with a bad back from an accident no one could have prevented.

But being back in Springfield gives me the opportunity to finally take Madison out on a date. When we were younger, she was too intimidating. At four years my senior I didn’t have the confidence to ask her out, even though I spent more time at her house with her brother, Ben than I did at my own.

I watched her grow through her awkward, adolescent teen years and she watched me go through puberty. We’ve seen each other at our worst, and now we’re at our best. All the more reason to ask her
