    The only thing worse than a vice president with a coke habit is a princess.

    Former vice president, I should say, who was a former client of mine.

    Everyone thought I had been hired to put together a private security team for him because a member of the secret service had leaked stories about his mistresses. That was partly true, but he didn't care if people were aware of his addiction to women. The nose candy was what he was ashamed of, and he assumed that someone who had leaked stories about the women would eventually leak stories about the drugs too.

    So, the secret service was pushed out of the inner circle, and I was let in. I saw a lot of fucked up shit when I was there, but I didn't blink whenever he snorted white powder up his nose. The one time he got a reaction out of me was when I saw him grab an ass he refused to let go of—after the owner of that ass told him to keep his paws to himself. He wrapped a hand around her throat and called her a bitch. Without thinking, I pulled him off her, slammed him against a wall, and nearly broke his arm when I twisted it behind his back.

    I used to think that was the worst job I'd ever had.

    I was wrong.

    Aw, Rye, a puppy! Annie said, running away from me as she launched herself toward a woman who was walking her dog in a stroller, in Central Park, in the middle of the day.

    New York City was a strange place. I missed Washington DC and my mother's home country, where Princess Annabelle Jewel Marie Argent had lived a sheltered life.

    Princesses were supposed to be dignified and reserved. They were trained from birth to act accordingly, in any situation.

    Annie was the exception to that rule.

    She had been born with a heart condition that was fatal for most. Half of the children who were afflicted with it passed on before they reached adulthood.

    Thinking she could die at any minute, the royal family had kept her condition a secret, not wanting the press to hound her doctors, family, and friends about the state of her health. They had babied her and doted on her non-stop, so
