    Introduction

You may be wondering why I have chosen the name

Relax & Grow Your Business. Over the years, as a certified public accountant (CPA), I have seen many new clients with their business bottom line in red ink. This book was born out of the idea that if some of these businesses in the red knew better, they would do better. This book was written to show entrepreneurs’ that a small business, if rightly managed, can bear fresh fruits for infinity.

Many books out there seem to confuse you rather than help you. I have read many books, along my journey, about various aspects of business. These books are very boring and traditional as it seems that the writer is just elaborating on someone else’s idea.

Running a small business can be a lot of work, but it is one of the most rewarding endeavors, especially if it is run right.

I have been a very successful business owner for more than fifteen years. This book is written from my experiences as an accountant and a business owner.

My mother got me started in business at a very young age. During the summer, I would work odd jobs to make some money.

One day, a woman named Mrs. Gardiner said to my mother, Your boys could make a lot of money selling fruits.

Mrs. Gardiner shared with my mother that people are always looking to buy fresh fruits.

Mrs. Gardiner sat at a spot located in downtown Nassau Bahamas. Here, her regular customers would stop by and purchase fruits for the week. When my brother and I got into the business, we decided to take it to another level. We offered the option for delivery of the fruits to our customers. After one summer of so much success, making over $5,000 at age thirteen, I thought to myself, Why not do this every summer?, which I did until age seventeen.

As a certified public accountant (CPA), I get to examine the financial health of many small businesses. This inside scope on the various businesses taught me one thing: No matter what type of business you have, if the operating process is disjointed the business will subsequently fail, or you will have to work on your business 24/7 for it to stay afloat.

This book is going to teach you something that you don’t learn in college. I have an MBA and I was not taught what I am about to share with you. The lesson in this book is going to be so invaluable that you are going to ask yourself, Why did I just get this memo?

    The Skills of a Technician

A technician is a person who has developed a set of skills through practice and theory. The average person starts a business to use his skills to make money and solve other people’s problems. Technicians, in most cases, are very good at what they do and they love doing their work. Technicians are a needed profession in society, and without these skills, the lives of men and women would be a challenge. By technician, I do not mean just the blue-collar workers. This definition also includes the white-collar workers. For instance, to build a house it takes a team of technicians – the architect, the plumber, the carpenter and many other skilled workers.

The Technician is Used to Being Just a Technician

When I first started my accounting practice, my first client was a family-owned restaurant business. The wife, Joanna, was a great cook who loved cooking. You would hardly see her in the front dealing with customers.
