Richard Pinkerton

I am in my early 50s and have been writing now since I was 12. I prefer to write light-hearted drama but have written a little fantasy horror and science fiction too.I have an entire series of high school novels (19 of them so far) set in New Zealand (The Mob from TAC series), which I will gradually publish if there is a demand.I prefer to use a mix of quirky and outrageous characters you would never come across in reality and also your every day Joes.My writings are aimed at teenagers mainly, but also young adults.I have also written a series of detective novelettes, most of which can be found on my website. The majority require work, to be able to be published here, mainly due to copyright issues. Please do leave feedback or contact me if you want to know more about my books.

    CHAPTER 1:

    Spyles 007 1/2

Tucker Pyles, alias Secret Agent Spyles 007 and a half, approached the communal lounge of the Rex Cassidy Investigators. He wore a trenchcoat and a large black Stetson hat and held a magnifying glass in his hand.

He tiptoed to the entranceway and peered around the corner to see who was inside. He was just in time to see the RCI's esteemed leader, Rex Cassidy enter from the other side and walk over to his stunningly gorgeous new wife, Angel. He sat down with her on the couch and they both locked lips.

Oh, how Tucker longed to be Rex right now. To be able to gaze into Angel's alluring blue eyes, to be able to run his fingers through her long blonde locks and to caress her smooth unblemished skin.

For a year now, the couple had been in wedded bliss. It was amazing that Rex seemed to have such idyllic relationships with woman, whereas Tucker always seemed to struggle. He and his latest girlfriend Myrtle were always arguing and there had even been times where Myrtle had said they were breaking up, but in the end, she'd always return to him.

'How's Vanessa?' Angel asked. 'Still the same?'

'Yep,' Rex said sadly. 'Just stares into nothing. At last, we can see her eyes now, but it's like there's no life in them.' He sighed.

Angel cuddled into him even tighter. 'Well as long as she's alive, there's still hope right?'

'Sure. Just best not to hold out too much, that's all.' Rex delivered her a forced smile.

Tucker thought of Vanessa Dante, there in her bed, in her catatonic state. She'd been in a coma for a long time and then had come out of it over a year earlier, but she just wouldn't respond to any external stimuli.

Tucker's heart broke when he thought of the Goddess. He'd loved her ever since he'd known her at high school. Then again, all their friends did. She was the most amazing, most beautiful women in the entire world and any of the RCI would have given their lives for her. They would have taken her place in the coma if they could have. Tucker had never met someone who was so adored by so many people. She was truly something special.

He wondered what would happen if Vanessa finally did come out of her state and found Rex now married to Angel. She would probably attempt to end her life yet again and she might succeed next time. Nevertheless, the doctors were adamant that even if she did recover, there would be major brain damage and she would never be the same. It just seemed wrong to Tucker, for a goddess to be in such condition.

He wished he could go into Vanessa's room and sit with her and hold her hand, but it was a privilege he didn't get to have. None of them got to do that, except for Rex and the occasional female guest who was close to Vanessa. Tucker couldn't help but fantasize about being there when Vanessa finally awoke, if she ever did, and be there to comfort her once she learnt that Rex had married another woman. One thing was for sure, she'd need someone to help her through. Why not Tucker? After all, they had been friends for a long time now.

Perhaps friends wasn't exactly the word. Vanessa tolerated him more than anything, but then it was the same for others in the RCI when it came to him. At least she was a lot nicer to him than most of the women who came through the doors of the estate.

'Tucker, pay attention!' He whispered angrily to himself. 'You're on the job. Quit daydreaming.'

He drew his magnifying glass to his eye and peered through it. He jumped when he saw both Angel and Rex staring at him, their faces enlarged due to the glass.

'What are you playing at, Tucker? Angel asked with a slight frown on her face.

Tucker cringed. He had hoped not to be seen, but then his huge muscular frame was very hard to hide. He peered down at his huge gut and his flabby arms. Yes, it was indeed a magnificent body, but definitely, one that stood out.

He raised his finger to his lips. 'Shhhhhh.'

Thump thump thump. He advanced into the lounge and slipped in behind the couch they sat on. 'How did you know I was there?' he hissed.

Angel replied, 'You kind of stick out like a sore thumb, Tucker and you make so much noise when you walk. I noticed you there before Rex came in.'

'Rats! If only there was some less obvious way of me sneeeeeaking into a rooooom.'

'How about just crashing through the wall?'

Tucker glanced around the room. ‘If I knock one down, I'd have to fix it.'

Rex chuckled. 'Never mind, Tucks. You'll figure out something for next time.'

'By the way, my name isn't Tucker. The name's Spyles. 007 and a half.'

    'Spyles it is.'

'SHHHHHHH! Don't tell everybody in the rooooom.'

'We're the only ones here,' Angel said.

Tucker glanced about the lounge and lowered his voice again. 'One doesn't knowwwww. The walls have ears you knowwww. Just in case, I shall check the room for bugs.' He moved to the coffee table and picked up the phone there and began to examine it.

'Don't worry about bugs now,' Rex said. 'Have a look later.'

Tucker had already pulled apart the earpiece and discovered a loose device attached to the side of it by something sticky. 'Ahha!' He tugged and pulled it free. 'A bug!'

Rex peered over at Tucker, a weird expression on his face. 'Hells Bells. Let me see that.'

Tucker handed it over with a smile on his face. He couldn't help but feel amused that Rex really seemed to think it might be a bug. He just hoped he hadn't wrecked an important part of the telephone.

Rex examined the device and his eyes widened.

'Rex?' Angel asked, a concerned look on her face.

'Drokk! This is a bug.' His eyes narrowed to Tucker. 'Did you put this here?'

    Tucker reeled. 'What? No!'

    'Don't fuck with me, Tucker.'

    'I didn't put it there!'

Rex frowned and examined the bug again. He lifted it to his mouth and let out a wild shout, which caused both Angel and Tucker to jump.

'Why did you do that for?' Tucker asked.

'Well if it's REMOVE or someone playing a joke on us, we'll be able to tell because they'll have sore ears. On the other hand, if there is someone else, outside the estate listening in, then they'll have sore ears hopefully.' He rose to his feet. 'We better talk to the others. Find out if they did this or if they had any friends in here that might have. If this doesn't belong to one of them, then we'd better do a thorough search of this place for more bugs. Spyles. Go get the bug detector device.'

'Yes, chief!' He propped his hat lower over his eyes and tiptoed out of the room.

    Chapter 2:

    Ambush

Rex breathed easier after a thorough search uncovered no further bugs. It meant that whoever it was had only gained access to the communal lounge. This would certainly have to narrow things down quite a bit. It meant that it could only have been one of their own, a few select staff members and friends of the RCI. Any other guests, like workmen or delivery people, only ever got to venture into the guest lounge and rarely got any further than that.

He talked to the other RCI and also those staff members who had access. No one had brought any unauthorised person in and the only person who had a friend whose integrity was in doubt was Will Ulman.

'He's been on my rugby team for the last two months,' Will, or Wal as he was better known said. 'Always seemed like a great guy to me. We get on like a house on fire. It can't have been him, man, not Big Malf.'

'Are you sure he's trustworthy?' Rex asked. 'I mean two months isn't a long time. I think we should at least question the guy.'

The big burly, longhaired Wal sighed. 'Yeah... I guess so. Man, I hope he's not the guy who planted the bug. It would suck if a friend I brought to the estate was really a criminal.'

    'What say we
