    Shadow Light - Jacob Trace

    Chapter

    1

Rex blinked against the bright light standing in the middle of the forest. Was it a trick of the sun? Even shielding his eyes didn't lessen the pulsing light. What the heck was it? He glanced back over his shoulder at his two-bedroom house. His wife and sons were there waiting for him to return with a rabbit or something to supplement their

Rather than return empty-handed, he clutched his jacket tighter around him and stepped into the direction of the shining light. Maybe it was a small private jet that crashed, and the wreckage was catching the sunlight in a weird way. There might be something useful he could find and sell. Six months since the layoff and the family didn't have any savings left. Emily, his wife, had started waitressing but he hated the fact she got pawed at regularly during her late nights at the bar. Only reason why they weren't on the streets was his family's wooden house and a patch of land nobody wanted.

Rex picked his way forward, ignoring the sensations of turning away and going home to his family. Unease trampled in his gut. Just one look. What could that hurt? Might be something worth money.

Visions of him driving a souped-up Corvette and his wife in a fur coat and diamonds beside him. And of course, she'd be showing off her new boobs. His kids would go to private schools and speak three languages and

At the corner of the forest, an archway stood with the light shining through it. His heart hammered in his chest. Ancient symbols scrawled across the stones, and he didn’t recognize any of them. Staring into the light was blinding, and he couldn’t make out anything beyond. Was this a magical portal? Alien wreckage? He’d been in these woods
