Richard Pinkerton

I am in my early 50s and have been writing now since I was 12. I prefer to write light-hearted drama but have written a little fantasy horror and science fiction too.I have an entire series of high school novels (19 of them so far) set in New Zealand (The Mob from TAC series), which I will gradually publish if there is a demand.I prefer to use a mix of quirky and outrageous characters you would never come across in reality and also your every day Joes.My writings are aimed at teenagers mainly, but also young adults.I have also written a series of detective novelettes, most of which can be found on my website. The majority require work, to be able to be published here, mainly due to copyright issues. Please do leave feedback or contact me if you want to know more about my books.

    CHAPTER 1:

    Emergency Landing

Place - 50,000 feet above the Atlantic Ocean on route to the USA from Africa

The Rex Cassidy Investigators were returning home from Safari in Africa. There were nine them all together including one guest. Rex Cassidy, Vanessa Dante, Vaughan Hearne, Will Ullman, Pete Cook, Jo Ashby, Tucker Pyles, Colin Hewes and Colin’s girlfriend, Frida.

Rex cuddled up to his gorgeous girlfriend, Vanessa in their first-class seats aboard. It was a small aircraft with only a few passengers, including a quartet of American dignitaries and a couple, the woman of which Rex had heard was an actress.

'Mmmm,' Vanessa said. The couple were only a few feet up from them and the blonde actress was tall and slim. She had just walked past them to head to the toilets. 'She is so hot. Too bad she's taken.'

Rex grinned and sipped from a glass of bubbly. It sure was great having a girlfriend who was just as keen to check out the hot chicks as he was, while like him. They had been together since high school and it was a relationship that had stood the test of time. They still couldn't get enough of each other. 'I wonder what she's in. I don't think I've seen any movie or TV show with her in.'

Vanessa nibbled on a cracker with cheese. 'Maybe she's just starting out. Looking for her big break.'

The head of Colin Hewes, Rex’s second in command, stretched over from the seat in front. 'I heard them talking before we came aboard. She's supposed to have scored some major role in some new TV sitcom coming out next year. Maybe it'll rate high and she'll become a star.’

They heard the voice of Jo Ashley across the aisle from Colin and his girlfriend Frida. 'How could she not? She's a total babe.'

Vanessa turned to Rex. 'I'm so tempted to go talk to her anyway, regardless of her boyfriend. I mean there's nothing wrong with just talking, right?'

Rex chuckled. 'That's if you can contain the urge to flirt.'

'Ohhhhh,' She groaned, staring down at her half-eaten cracker. 'I don't think I could. She's so darn cute. I wonder if she's ever done any modelling?'

    'Who knows.'

Vanessa was becoming very sought after in the modelling world and had recently signed a huge multi-million contract with a fashion company to be their face. She was pretty much assured supermodel status and already people were starting to recognise her. She shunned any work that involved nudity or even getting down to underwear or lingerie. She did a lot of swimsuit modelling, but nothing less than that. She could and had always been able to dictate her terms and had when it came to the fashion company she had signed a contract with too.

'I can't wait to get home,' Vanessa said. 'It will be so nice to get back to normal temperatures again, rather than that horrible heat. It was even too hot to make love most of the time. When it's too whatever to make love, then it's definitely not a place I want to be.'

    Rex grinned. ‘Damn straight.'

They paused as one of the American dignitaries raised her voice. She was a woman who looked to be in her fifties. Skinny and rather austere looking. She spoke in a German accent. 'You sink you have a problem? I'm the one that had to put up viss you for 23 days! It vill be a velcome relief to return to the governor's mansion!'

A middle-aged African American man replied in a softer tone, 'I wish you'd stayed at the governor's mansion.'

    ‘I hear you!'

'Helga, please,' said the third dignitary, a rather distinguished American with an air of superiority about him. He seemed to be speaking down his nose. 'We are aboard an aircraft. At least try to maintain a little dignity.'

'Ah, can it, Winton!' growled the German woman. 'It's bad enough that I have to put up viss him, vissout your smug attitude as well.'

Winton snorted and turned his head to peer out the window.

'Now, now,' said the final man, a tall friendly looking man. 'Let's not fight. I know these meetings in Africa were long and laborious, but it's all over now. Let's just enjoy the flight and relax.'

'I agree with Governor Gunston,' said Winton.

The Governor continued talking but in a more jovial tone this time. 'You know, this reminds me of a time five years ago, when I was flying from New York to Chicago. We were—'

Suddenly the plane jerked up and down. For a moment, everything went silent and it caused Rex to sit up straight. The engines had stopped. They kicked back into action again and the plane vibrated a little.

'Whoa,' Will Ullman, said from behind Rex. 'What was that?'

Vaughan Hearne sat next to him. 'Man alive, it sounded like the engines stopped for a bit. Wal, did you fart?'

Will Ulman snickered. ‘No. Only Tucker’s farts would cause a plane to malfunction, but then we’d smell it. We’d be asphyxiating by now.’

It happened again. The engines stalled and the aircraft vibrated. The aircraft’s only stewardess appeared at the end of the aisle, pale-faced.

‘Good God,' Vanessa said. 'Something's up.'

    Once again the engine started.

The captain's voice came over the loudspeaker. 'Ladies and gentleman, please remain calm, but we are having engine difficulties. It requires that we make an emergency landing…'

'UUUHHBBAAHHHHHH!' Tucker Pyles screeched from near the back of the plane. 'But we're over the ocean!'

'...fortunately, our mayday has been picked up and we have learnt there is an emergency airfield below on a nearby island. It seems that we have been extremely lucky. So please prepare for a landing.'

'Lucky?' Vanessa said. 'If I believed in God, I'd say it was a miracle. An island just when we needed it?'

'Seems too good to be true,' Rex said. 'Very convenient indeed. I guess we'd best just thank our lucky stars.'

The aircraft began to dip, but once again the engines spluttered. Fortunately, they kicked back into life and the aircraft continued to descend.

Vanessa gripped hold of Rex's arm. 'Oh God, I hope we make it. I hope the engine holds out.'

The pilot's voice came over again. 'We're nearing the emergency landing, but just to be on the safe side we require everyone to assume the crash position.'

'UUUUHHBBAAAAHHH!' Tucker wailed again. 'We're going to die!'

'Shut up, Tucker, we're not going to die!' snarled Pete Cook.

Rex looked out the window to see where they were. It was an island, quite a tropical one too, with many trees. He couldn't see any buildings, but there was an old dirty runway, which he hoped was long enough for a plane their size to land.

'Coming into land now,’ Rex said.

Everyone braced themselves hoping that the landing would go off without a hitch. Vanessa gripped
