Author

Richard Pinkerton

I am in my early 50s and have been writing now since I was 12. I prefer to write light-hearted drama but have written a little fantasy horror and science fiction too.I have an entire series of high school novels (19 of them so far) set in New Zealand (The Mob from TAC series), which I will gradually publish if there is a demand.I prefer to use a mix of quirky and outrageous characters you would never come across in reality and also your every day Joes.My writings are aimed at teenagers mainly, but also young adults.I have also written a series of detective novelettes, most of which can be found on my website. The majority require work, to be able to be published here, mainly due to copyright issues. Please do leave feedback or contact me if you want to know more about my books.

    Cruising to Atlantis

500 KMs off the coast of Miami

    'Rexy, are you okay?'

Rex Cassidy, leader of the Rex Cassidy Investigators stared out over the ocean from his private luxury yacht, The Goddess, along with fellow members of the RCI plus guests. He'd purchased the yacht two years earlier and named it in honour of his darling, Vanessa, who'd adopted the nickname The Goddess by the guys at school, due to her amazing beauty and charismatic personality. The name had stuck over the years and she still got called it by those in the know. However, right now she lay in a coma back in the USA and Rex hated the fact that he wasn't there to pay her his daily visits.

'I'm okay...' Rex said. 'Just having one of my down moments.'

'Hun...' Angel Murray, Rex's stunning blonde girlfriend sat down beside him. She'd been hired as Vanessa's nurse when she first went into a coma and Rex had fallen hook line and sinker for her. 'You need to try to keep her out of your mind. You can't let your concern for her ruin your vacation.'

'I know, I know...' Rex said. 'I'll be okay, I promise. I want you to have a wonderful time too.'

The blue-eyed beauty caressed his arm. 'I know it's hard. This is the first time you've actually gone away since she went into a coma. I'm so glad you asked me to come with you.'

Rex gazed into her eyes. 'I wouldn't want to be with anyone else.'

    'Apart from Vanessa.'

Rex chuckled. 'Yeah, well that's true, but I guess I just have to get used to the fact that she may never come out of her coma and if she does, she'll probably be suffering serious brain damage. She may even end up in a vegetated state. God, I hate thinking about that.'

'Then don't. Let's just focus on the excitement of this cruise and the fact that we're almost at the site of the lost city of Atlantis. Wow. I can't even believe that myself!'

Rex smiled as he gazed at her full red lips and sunkissed face. She always made him feel better when he was down about Vanessa. If it wasn't for the fact that Vanessa was still alive, he probably would have committed to her a lot sooner, but it was only now that he'd begun to see her as someone who could not so much replace Vanessa, but fill the gap she had left.

They joined the rest of their Rex Cassidy Investigators on the main deck by the swimming pool. They were all there, some with their own girlfriends. They also had two guests. A wealthy friend of their’s from Malibu, John Luger and his butler, who he’d brought on board to serve the needs of the RCI.

The butler was an ageing gent who spoke in a cultured British accent. 'I was never much for sailing, but there was this one time in the Falkland's where my regiment had to sail across the sea to our drop off point.’

He held a tray with cocktails on it. Rex and Angel took one each.

‘However, the weather was not quite as glorious as it is here this afternoon, in fact, quite the opposite. The seas were choppy. If I was to be specific, they were quite horrendous and most of the men were seasick well before we had to land.’

He moved offered drinks to the others as he spoke. ‘As you can well imagine, when we finally hit the beach, most of the regiment were in no condition to go into battle. We had to remain on the beach and rest for several hours first. I was the one who—'

'Rhodes,' Luger interjected. 'I'm sure all these people, especially the ladies aren't interested in hearing how your regiment threw up all over the beach.' He sipped from his cocktail. He was a tall man in good shape. He wore no shirt, displaying a hairy chest.

Rhodes peered at him with disdain. 'Really, John we did no such thing. We were just—'

'What do you call this cocktail, Rhodes?’ Luger asked, wiping moisture from his bushy moustache. ‘I think it’s a bit light on the vodka.’

‘It doesn’t have vodka at all,’ Rhodes said.

‘A cocktail without vodka?’ Luger grinned, showing dimples on his cheeks. 'I should have replaced you years ago, Rhodes. A good cocktail always has vodka.’

‘It’s a Screaming Viking. Screaming Vikings do not have vodka!’

    Rhodes chuckled.

Rex doubted he’d ever replace Rhodes. The English gent had been the Luger family butler ever since John was a child. It was a little like Bruce Wayne and his Alfred. Or perhaps in this case, more like Arthur and his Hobson.

Colin Cook took a swig of his cocktail. 'First drink I've ever tried that has cucumber juice in it. Surprisingly very nice and I don't even like cucumbers.'

'Technically, the Vikings would never have eaten cucumbers,' Rhodes said. 'Cucumbers originated from India and spread to Western Asia, but wouldn't have made it to Scandinavia until much later on well after the Viking Age ended.'

'Geez, Rhodes, we don't need a history lesson,' Luger said.

'Oh leave him alone,' Angel said. 'I've been enjoying hearing his stories and all his little facts and figures.'

Rhodes smiled. 'Thank you. It's good to know that there are people who appreciate these little known facts.'

‘Well!’ said Colin Hewes, second in command of the RCI. Although recently he had taken the reigns quite a bit as Rex had not involved himself in any cases due to his crisis with Vanessa. He grimaced as he looked into his own glass. ‘If you ask me, no drink should ever have cucumber juice in it. It’s just wrong.’

Something rolled across the deck and came to a stop at the foot of Rhodes. It was a glass marble. Tucker Pyles sat on the deck not far away, scratching his short curly hair.

'Marbles?' Rhodes asked. 'Really? A grown man?'

'That's Tucker for you,' Colin said, placing his glass back on Rhode’s tray. ‘I think I’ll just have a beer thanks.’ Colin folded his muscular arms and peered down at the solitary marble before them. ‘Funny… I thought he'd lost them all.'

Their hugely obese travelling companion hauled himself up and walked towards them a troubled look in his eyes. ‘I can’t believe it. I've lost my marbles!'

    They all burst out laughing.

'So you finally realised the truth after all these years?' Colin said.

'It's not funny!’ He bent down and picked up the one there. ‘They all rolled under the railing and fell out into the ocean. All except this one.'

‘Wow.’ Colin shook his head with a snort. 'And it’s taken
