CHAPTER 1:
Terrorism
Hollywood – The Rex Cassidy Investigators’ home
Rex Cassidy, leader of the Rex Cassidy Investigators stared in disbelief at the TV screen. A few members of his crew sat around as well, watching the breaking newscast.
His darling Vanessa cuddled up with him as she sat on his lap, her sapphire blue eyes staring in anguish. ‘God, I can’t believe it.’ She squeezed him. ‘Why would they do that? What sort of people are they?’
‘Muslim terrorists, surely?’ Rex said.
On the television screen were ruins of the Statue of Liberty. Once a proud monument and a landmark tourist attraction in New York, was now reduced to rubble.
The television reported…
A warning was given by the terrorists, who contacted security telling them to evacuate. The majority of tourists and workers managed to escape the blast, however five are missing and it is believed they did not make it out. Why the terrorists would give such a warning is unknown, but authorities believe their intention was not to harm anyone on this occasion, but have done this as a warning or as a statement…
Colin Hewes, second in charge of the RCI, spoke, ‘Not likely to be Muslims then. They don’t care how many innocent people they blow up, in fact they seem to revel in killing innocents.’
‘Well they’re still low life scum of the earth to me!’ Vanessa said. ‘It’s sickening. And it seems some didn’t make it out.’
‘And to think this is their second target and they’re still out there. God knows how many tourist attractions they’re going to destroy before they’re stopped.’
Explosives were planted at various structural points under the statue. It has been ascertained that the explosives were planted within an hour of detonation. Security men on guard were targeted and taken out in a professional manner so that the explosives could be laid. Sources say that the group were extremely well trained and were able to pull off the operation without being detected by cameras or other security guards. It is assumed that this group may be military in origin and there is no doubt they are the same group that blew up London’s Big Ben Tower last weekend in a similar manner. So far English and US agencies are baffled as to the motives of these terrorists and exactly what they want.
‘What a load of crock,’ Colin growled. ‘Someone must know. If these guys are wanting to hold world powers to ransom, then they must have contacted someone by now. Whoever they’ve contacted is keeping it quiet, not letting onto the media about it.’
‘What could they want though?’ asked Pete Cook. ‘Money? Power?’
Tucker Pyles, one of the RCI’s more eccentric members paused from munching on a sandwich to comment. ‘I wouldn’t be surprised if they want to corner all the world’s food markets or something. That’s what I’d do if I was them.’
‘Yeah, you would,’ Pete said. ‘That’s the sort of thing you used to do at High school. Terrorise other kids for food.’
Rex’s attention was quickly drawn back to the television when a major announcement came over the air.
This just in. The terrorists have made contact with the authorities and have made their demands. They are an unnamed group of Americans who claim to be independent and they are targeting all countries under the United Nations. They require a sum of 100 Billion Dollars otherwise they will continue to target landmarks around the world!’
‘Geez!’ gasped Vaughan Hearne.
‘Well at least someone’s owning up to having been contacted now,’ Colin said. ‘I guess I spoke too soon.’
Rex smirked. ‘I’m with you though. I say they were contacted a lot sooner than this. The terrorists blew up Big Ben. They would have made their demands before blowing up another target. I’m willing to bet that the UN just weren’t willing to play ball with the terrorists, so this attack is in retaliation to that. Still, can’t believe it’s all about money. There’s gotta be more to it than that.’
‘You’re right,’ Vanessa said. ‘I just wonder what lengths these scumbags will go to, to get what they want.’
Colin let out a deep breath. ‘Kind of strange that it’s Americans who are doing it though. I mean targeting their own country?’
‘Traitorous bastards!’ Pete glared.
‘Doesn’t mean it’s Americans pulling the strings though. They could be working for foreign interests, maybe even the Muslims. Money can make people do some crazy stuff.’
‘True.’
Colin paused to sip on a glass of beer. ‘Just look at what happened last year with that gang of sniper terrorists. They were into arms trading, financing overseas armies and terrorist groups. They didn’t care that it was LA streets they were shooting up or if innocents were getting killed.’
Their private business phone rang. Rex reached it and answered. ‘Rex Cassidy, Rex Cassidy Investigators.’
‘Mr Cassidy?’
‘That’s me.’
‘My name is General Jackson Muldoon of the United Nations…’
If it wasn’t for what Rex had just seen on the news he would have scoffed and considered it a prank call, but on this occasion he sat up straight. ‘Seriously?’
‘Yes, I take it you are watching the news about the latest terrorist attack.’
‘I am.’
‘Well, sir, it seems that the United Nations is in a quandary and we have no choice but to enlist your services.’
‘What? But we’re not a terrorist combat group. Call in MI6 or CTU!’
‘I’m afraid we can’t,’ said Muldoon. ‘The terrorists have made some demands, ones that at first we were unable to take seriously. However after the destruction of the Statue of Liberty, I’m afraid we have no choice.’
‘Demands? What kind of demands and what do they have to do with us.’
‘Mr Cassidy… the terrorists are demanding that they deal with you personally…’

Rex, Vaughan and Colin had to catch an emergency flight to New York where they met with the
