If Life Was a Dream

Fifty-one poems included in this collection describe the author’s internal and external sentiments and the journey of exploring human behavior and its unique presence on this planet. Human life is filled with various phases where love, passion, suffering, rejection, acceptance, pathos, and pleasure intertwine in a homogenous fluidity that is the essence of human existence. To understand and cherish human quality will allow us to value the human life with dignity that needs to be preserved and celebrated throughout the humanity. This collection of poems raises the concerns of women and empowers their identity and voice so that women’s rights would be preserved and would resonate with people who have experienced the pain, suffering and falling in and out of love that life offers. They accept the challenges because that is the essence of living. Poetry is the language of heart; it might differ from one tongue to the other, but it will always sing the life’s song in a melody of quivering strings of a violin, sitar, or as “Bauls of Bengal” sing: “floating on the chariot of life.” The book, If Life Was a Dream, is indeed a thought-provoking, unique, and compelling read.

Shukdeb Sen

Partition of India by Britain and sectarian violence among Hindu-Moslem forced Shukdeb Sen to flee from his birth place Khulna, Bangladesh and settle in Calcutta, India. These tragic experiences made him a loner, and writing became a refuge and a safe world, where his creative mind could flourish. He published many poems in Bengali journals in Calcutta. He studied biological sciences at City College, Presidency College and Ballygunge Science College affiliated with Calcutta University. Then moved to the USA to study Plant Physiology and Cell Biology, and earned a master’s and a doctoral degree. During the last three decades, he has been teaching, mentoring and conducting research in academia, and published many scientific articles in Europe and the USA. Last five years, Shukdeb Sen devoted his time to his passion for creative writing and published three books: Black Education in White America (non-fiction), Flower Still Blooms (fiction, a collection of short stories), and If Life Was a Dream (Poetry). As of this writing, he has completed another short story collection titled America in the Year 2048 and Other Stories. Innocence is his debut novel.

About the Author

Born in Bangladesh, Shukdeb Sen moved to Calcutta (now Kolkata), India. He then immigrated to U.S.A. and has spent over a thirty-year career in teaching, research, and mentoring undergraduate students at various colleges and universities in South. If Life Was a Dream is his first poetry book. He has published a non-fiction book titled, Black Education in White America. He authored over thirty research articles in scientific journals and he currently lives in Florida, U.S.A.
