    Surviving Zero - W. H. Beswick

    CHAPTER 1

    REGGAN

I am standing alone on the crest of a small hill. A wide deep snow covered valley spreads out before me. It is a rare sunny day. So the snow sparkles making the land look almost magical. The snow covered trees with their icicles hanging from their branches make them almost pass for Christmas trees. I am just standing there listening but the only sound it the wind. For one brief moment I am at peace. No voices. No smells. Just quiet. Before I can truly savor it the wind becomes louder. My red curls are blown back from my face. I feel not only the chill of the air but the unseen things that made my very soul shiver. My black and gold eyes pop open when the voices reach my ears. They are all saying the same thing over and over. In soft accusing voices. Why you? Why You? Why do you get to live? Why did I have to die? What makes you so special?

I step back when see a blackness covering the distant land. It moves very quickly. As it gets closer, I can see it is not smooth. The surface seems to twist and turn, like a living thing. The voices become louder, filling the air and my ears, all accusing and blaming me, asking the same questions, over and over. I have no answer. I clamp my hands over my ears, but this doesn’t muffle them. As the thing moves closer, I can see what I thought was swirling currents are hands and faces, coming out of the thick wave of blood rolling toward me. At first, I think they are swimming to escape, but then realize they are clawing at the air, reaching out for me. Their screams fill my ears. I bring up my MP5. For some reason, I look down. The weapon and my hands are covered with blood. So much blood. It soaks right through my gloves. I drop the weapon screaming, raising my blood soaked hands over my head. I scream, but it is drowned out by the angry voices. The angry blood creatures are almost on top of me. I turn and run. I only get a few yards before my boots sink into the snow. I am now knee-deep, barely able to move. I try to wade through the snow, but it may as well be quick sand. I fall forward onto the ground, now crawling on my hands and knees. I look back to see a bloody wave of faces and hands reaching out for me. The bloody hands and face rise up over me like a great wave. The words fill my ears as the red wave of death crashes down on
