    Chapter 1: Bad Omen

The faint echoes of dripping water and distant footsteps bounced from the cavernous walls of the dilapidated space. Two rusted metal doors slowly creaked open. A flock of crows scattered into the sky through the damaged roof above. Nine hooded shadows emerged from the darkness of the doorway, their hidden eyes focused on a sizable mirror embedded into the back wall. The light from the hallway rushed through the opened doors, illuminating the room. Despite being hidden away for many centuries, the mirror remained eerily pristine, still shimmering like a night star. Dimly lit statues of armored warriors scattered around the room reflected in the magnificent mirror. In their reflections, the statues moved, curiously turning their heads toward the mysterious intruders.

This is the place, a proper, young voice whispered.

The hooded strangers climbed the set of stairs leading to the mirror and positioned themselves in a semi-circle in front of the daunting reflector. One of the figures stepped forward rubbing his hand along the cold glassy surface of the mirror. The seemingly solid glass began to warp and ripple, sending the room’s reflection into a scattered mishmash of twisted shapes.

Hmm. This barrier is powerful. But there are ways around such forces, the proper man said.

Another figure in the center of the group opened a thick tome and sifted through the pages. His shrouded eyes pursued the book’s many incantations. Ah, here it is. Follow my lead, the stranger calmly muttered.

The nine figures began to chant and a ghostly haze filled the room. A bright light began to shine from the center of the mirror. The pace of the chanting increased. The light began to pulse and spread across the glass until the entirety of the mirror shined like a doorway of pure radiance. A blinding white flash engulfed the room and then dissipated. The nine figures ceased their chanting, each pair of curious eyes centered on the mirror. The location in the mirror had changed yet the reflections of the moving statues remained, now agitated and defensive of the intrusion. The nine strangers examined the hazy reflection of a barren wasteland of sand and nothingness. Ripples formed at the center of the mirror, distorting, and warping the lonely expanse. The one with the book smiled, impressed by his ability. He stepped closer to the mirror and poked the glass. The ripples glided across the mirror’s surface like a pool of water.

Interesting…we must continue. We are nearly there, the man said.

The nine resumed their chant and the rippling grew more intense until the image was nearly unrecognizable. Suddenly, a bulge protruded from the massive mirror and a sickly hand slowly emerged from the rippling surface. The leader of the group stepped forward, eager with excitement, as the strange being pulled itself from the mirror. The reflections of the statues reached out their hands as if trying to capture whatever creature was trying to escape the grasp of its magical bind. The chanting reached a crescendo and the emerging entity hurled itself from the mirror and onto the floor. The rippling gradually stopped and the mirror’s reflection returned to normal. The mysterious escapee sat on all fours panting. He appeared sickly and feeble. Despite his fickle appearance, his cobalt eyes were commanding and powerful. His armor was reminiscent of Julius and Beldazon’s. A sinister maliciousness oozed from him as he slowly raised his head and examined the shrouded figures surrounding him. His breaths were heavy and his legs wobbled when he tried to stand. The nine crowded around the downed man bearing their palms to help him to his feet.

Don’t touch me! The man protested, violently pushing the shrouded figures away. Where are they? Where is he? He screamed.

Father, please calm down, a mannerly female voice assured, stepping forward.

    Father? The man questioned.

Yes, father. It’s me, the woman replied, removing her hood.

    Verutia? Where is your brother?

Welcome back, father, a male voice greeted, removing his hood.

    Orthenius? You have grown, boy.

The decrepit man turned to examine the remaining figures. I assume they are all here as well? He inquired.

No, father. We found a way to bring you back without the need of Genrou and his friends, Verutia replied.

Where are they? The man asked, an intense anger clouding his eyes.

Larenia, Yuya, and Alakin are dead. They were killed by Beldazon. We have heard rumors of Genrou. He has changed his name to Julius. He dispatched Beldazon not too long ago and then disappeared. And there’s more. There are…children. Beldazon, Larenia, Yuya, Alakin, Genrou, their blood still walk these lands. Rumors of Zorian’s lineage have even cropped up in whispers. Even…Celonia, Orthenius replied, pausing.

The old man looked back at his children, a smile creeping. Beldazon, huh? It appears he truly was as malleable as I thought. That foolish fawn was practically pining for war. It’s a shame. We could have used him once more. And Celonia made her choice. She’s dead to me. No matter. I have returned. And this time, I will make good on my promise, the man boasted.

Lord Zathandalous, I am currently concocting a scheme that you may find most pleasing, the man with the book informed.

Zathandalous turned toward the shrouded man smiling. I know that voice. Judging by your calm demeanor I assume that you still have your wits about you.

The shrouded figure lifted his hood and nodded. Yes, my lord. Tarin, at your service. Zaros is under control for the moment, my lord, Tarin replied with a polite bow, his other half locked firmly within the cage of his shaky mind.

Zathandalous smiled and carefully descended the staircase, wobbling as he stepped. His children followed closely behind, watching him to avoid a fall.

I am curious to hear this plan of yours, Tarin, Zathandalous beckoned.

I think this strategy may just be my masterpiece.

Zathandalous smiled and cracked each of his knuckles with his thumb. Suddenly, the room became ethereal, hazy. The figures faded and the room went black.

I love this feeling. It’s a shame that all good things are so short-lived, Maya said with a sad smile.

Did you see something, Maya? Julius asked.

I’m not sure. It’s just a feeling, but for now, I want to lose myself in this moment, Maya replied.

I couldn’t agree with you more, young lady, Julius replied.

Three years later, Zannondale still basked in the peace brought from Beldazon’s defeat seven years prior. Dorian and Xia now enjoyed a peaceful life in Genrou’s Grotto with Julius while Kara and Dain prospered in the rebuilt city of Gothe. Kaya and Lucas resided in the renewed city of Loxx where Rin, after considering Kara’s words on magical usage, decided to spread his teachings to the magically inclined to help the city grow with his unique abilities. The renowned warrior Bartas raised his seven-year-old son, Nolan, with his wife Siena in Haven Hollow, a new city formed above The Hidden Underground. Maya now presided over the newly constructed city.

Maya often struggled to sleep. She tossed and turned in her bed dreaming of distant possibilities and outcomes. Her most recent musing, one she had seen before, returned as she slept. She could see fuzzy images of a grand city of joyous people, then heard a thunderous roar and the streets began to flood. The raging waters decimated nearby structures and swallowed fleeing pedestrians like a hungry beast. The earth was broken and warped by an intense quake. Searing fires scorched the city in the distance, creating a hellish horizon of screams and smoke. Terrified survivors desperately fled into a nearby forest to escape the crumbling metropolis. Maya writhed in her sleep, mumbling to herself as she often did.

No. No please no, not my sister, Maya screamed. The terrifying dream jolted her awake. She clutched her head, panting heavily. Her thoughts raced frantically. She struggled to make sense of her terrifying nightmare. W…what the hell? She whispered. She laid her head back down looking up at the ceiling. A powerful sense of doom crippled her, one that chilled her, bringing about a quick shudder that seized her body.

Why? Why do I keep having this dream? She cried, hiding her face behind her clammy fingers. A quick glimpse of Kaya’s innocent smiling face flashed through her mind’s eye. Maya jumped out of bed and walked to her window. She sat on the window seal gazing toward the full moon above, bathed in its bluish glow.

Even the moon can’t soothe me tonight, she murmured.

She sighed and blankly stared into the city below. A dizzy spell struck. She massaged her aching temples as she glanced toward her sword propped against the corner. A few dizzying steps later she retrieved her blade from the moonlit corner and held it in her hands. I guess peace never lasts for too long, unfortunately, Maya said, hugging her sword close to her chest.

She returned to the window and gazed over the city for several hours. Just as she felt herself falling asleep she spotted small rays of sunlight peeking from the horizon. I have to go see her. I have to warn them. I fear that things are about to get much worse, she said as her heavy lids clasped shut.

Back in Genrou’s Grotto, Dorian lay awake in bed, unable to fall back asleep. He sighed, and his sight drifted toward Xia. Her tranquil expression put him at ease. He smiled and caressed her soft face with the back of his hand. He lost himself in a happy memory that made his smile grow wider.

Are you all right, Dorian? Xia whispered.

You’re awake? Yeah…I’m fine, Dorian replied after a brief hesitation.

Xia laughed, her brow arching in defiance. Dorian, I can always tell when you’re lying. What’s wrong?

I have that feeling again. I have a bad feeling that something terrible is going to happen. I haven’t felt this way since the incident with my father. I…I’m worried.

Dorian, everything will be alright. Even if something were to happen I’m sure we could handle it.

Maybe you’re right. We have been married for five years after all. Nothing is too difficult at this point, Dorian jested.

What exactly is that supposed to mean? Xia replied, exchanging a friendly slap against his bare chest.

I…I didn’t mean it like that, Xia, Dorian replied, stumbling over his words.

What exactly did you mean? Xia playfully questioned, crawling on top of him.

Well, I just meant that love is a tough business and we’ve been through a lot together. So, we could take on almost anything and I love you.

Good answer. For a moment there I thought I was going to have to hurt you. Xia leaned toward Dorian’s ear whispering. I may be able to help you relax. You want to go a few rounds?

Dorian chuckled and slid his hands through Xia’s dark hair. Does a Dain always lose his socks? He replied, positioning Xia in his lap. It’s been seven years since we met and I still can’t get enough of you, he whispered.

Xia smiled and wrapped her arms around Dorian’s neck. I have to admit, you are getting a little stale, sweetie, Xia teased.

    Oh, you are evil…

Dorian pressed his lips against hers and gently gripped the back of her head. After a momentary embrace, he pulled away smiling. I guess I’ll just have to be more creative, then, he whispered. Dorian laid Xia on her back and stared down at her.

What are you going to do to me? Xia playfully whined.

    You’ll see.

Xia chuckled as Dorian teased her neck with wet kisses. Xia looked away, her gaze was distant, losing focus for a moment. Dorian noticed her hesitation and stopped.

    Are you all right?

Xia smiled as she turned to face him. Dorian, I have to tell you something.

    What is it?

Before Xia could reply a voice suddenly interrupted. Is anyone there? Can you hear me? The voice echoed.

Maya is that you? Xia questioned.

Yes, it’s me, Maya replied and switched to Dorian’s mind. Hello, Dorian.

I have to admit this whole telepathy thing is extremely creepy, Dorian said.

Xia laughed and covered her face in embarrassment.

I apologize if I interrupted anything important but I need to speak with you.

A little late for apologies, Maya. The moment has passed. What do you need to discuss? Dorian smugly retorted.

I have been having a very troubling vision and tonight I had it again in my sleep. I need to meet with you and the others in Loxx. Please get there as soon as you can. I have already informed the others, Maya explained, switching between the two of their minds.

Okay, Maya. We’ll be there. What did you see in your vision? Xia questioned.

I don’t want to say. I’m still pretty shaken up about it. I’ll explain everything when we all arrive in Loxx.

Are you sure you don’t want to talk about this? You sound very upset, Xia pressed.

Okay…but please tell Dorian to leave. Just in case you do speak out loud. I want this to just be between you and me, Maya requested, her voice cracking under stress.

Xia glanced toward Dorian and nodded.

I know…it’s girl time. I’ll be outside, he replied.

Dorian left the house and headed toward the river. He paused at the bank gazing into the rushing stream. The feeling that had plagued him during his encounter with his father had returned and Paerlio’s scarred face flashed through his mind. He couldn’t shake the feeling of fear lingering within him.

Something’s wrong, the entity echoed inside Dorian’s mind.

    I know.

Dorian heard footsteps, then Julius’ reflection appeared next to him.

    Can’t sleep either, huh?

I feel it too, Dorian. I feel that Maya is carrying a heavy burden and she needs a little time to deal with the stress. Her father had similar issues when he would experience very vivid premonitions. Alakin once had a vision so emotionally powerful that he burst into tears, Julius replied.

It still amazes me how much you can discern from your ability to feel, Julius.

I also believe she has been carrying this burden for quite some time. I believe Maya had a vision on her sister’s wedding day that disturbed her, but she was reluctant to share it with me, Julius explained.

How do you know all this? I thought you could only pick up on subtle feelings? Dorian asked.

    She contacted me too, Dorian.

Ah, I see. Maya has become quite powerful. It’s kind of creepy, isn’t it?

No, not really. I’m used to it.

What do you think is bothering her?

I’m sure everything will be explained when we arrive in Loxx.

    I hope so, Julius.

Dorian, Xia called, opening the front door.

    See you soon, old man,

You too, young man….hey…watch your mouth, Julius replied, his brow cocking.

Dorian shuffled back home chuckling, following Xia into the bedroom. She took a breath as she sat down on the bed. Xia’s sullen response to Maya’s news only worsened Dorian’s feelings of dread. He sat down next to her, pulling her closer as she rested her head against his shoulder.

I’m very worried about Maya, Dorian. She sounded so afraid. Maybe you were right. Maybe something is going to happen.

    What did she say?

    I can’t say. I promised her I wouldn’t.

Dorian rested his head against Xia’s. It’s okay. When we all meet up in Loxx we’ll get to the bottom of all of this. I promise. Everything is going to be okay, Dorian assured. He held Xia tightly and his mind began to wander. He felt something terrible looming. He knew that the road ahead would rival the chokehold that Beldazon brought down on the peaceful continent of Zannondale, or worse…exceed it.

    Chapter 2: My Sister’s Keeper

The next morning, Maya gathered her things and met her private carriage driver in front of her home. Despite the sunny weather, Maya bore a glum grimace, more so than her usual contemplative scowl.

Good morning, Lady Maya. Where will you be traveling today? The man politely asked as he opened the carriage door.

Loxx today, Mason. Thank you, she replied, stepping inside.

The kindly carriage man Mason was only slightly taller than she was. His well-kempt red locks hid beneath a dapper cap, one that gave him an air of a sophisticate. Mason noticed that Maya seemed distant and quieter than usual. Lady Maya, if you don’t mind me asking, are you all right?

Maya forced a smile and nodded. Yes, Mason. I’m fine. Thank you for your concern.

Mason nodded and closed the carriage door. He took his seat at the helm and grabbed the reins. Mason knew something was troubling Maya but he didn’t want to risk upsetting her with a persistent inquisition. Mason slapped the reins and guided the horses onward toward the city of Loxx. During the soothing morning ride, Maya methodically recounted her reoccurring vision. She murmured to herself, examining each moment of her nightmarish experience. I can’t let this happen, she said.

The nearly sleepless night had taken its toll and Maya began to slip in and out of a light sleep as the carriage gently rocked. While she slept, Maya caught a glimpse of a group of cloaked figures destroying a magnificent city. Their hoods were removed but their faces were too hazy to identify. Her vision quickly shifted to the flooded, ruined city she had seen the previous night in her dream. Suddenly, her vision changed again. She saw Kaya running through a wooded area. The destroyed city crumbled in the distance. Kaya ran deeper into the forest and entered an open area. Suddenly, a figure appeared in front of her. Maya was unable to discern the face of the mysterious figure.

Where do you think you’re going? A crazed voice taunted.

Kaya slid to a stop readying her bow.

You can’t kill me with that pathetic weapon, girl, the stranger retorted.

Wanna bet, Kaya countered and released her arrow.

The arrow stopped in front of the stranger’s face, suspended by some mysterious force, as another hooded figure emerged from the woods.

Give up, Kaya. You can’t win, a feminine voice declared.

Kaya slowly backed away and attempted to run, only to slam into an intimidating cloaked man behind her, arms crossed and scowling. Kaya’s eyes widened with fear as she attempted to fire her bow. The man wrapped his right hand around Kaya’s throat and lifted her off the ground. Her bow dropped at the stranger’s feet. Which one of them is this? The man asked.

She is one of the daughters of Alakin, the woman replied.

The man smiled and looked into Kaya’s eyes. Your old man was quite smart and fast. I guess you didn’t take after him, the man taunted, grinning.

L…let me go! Kaya yelled, struggling to break free.

It’s a shame. I heard your father had much more dignity before he died. Are you scared of death, little one?

N…no. I…I just don’t want to hurt the ones I leave behind, Kaya murmured.

The man chuckled. You just might be your old man’s daughter after all. You are a brave one, and for that, I’ll make it quick.

Tears flooded down Kaya’s cheeks as she stared death in the face. Consider this a gift to Maya for showing me such a great time, the female voice taunted.

Another figure emerged from the woods. One that gave Kaya hope.

    Kaya!

L…Lucas. H…help, Kaya cried, struggling to speak.

Lucas ran toward the man as fast as he could. The sadistic assailant looked back at Kaya scowling. If you have anything to say, young lady, say it now, the man urged as Lucas sprinted closer.

Kaya locked eyes with Lucas from a distance and smiled. I love you, Lucas, she whispered.

The attacker materialized a pulsing blade of dark aura from his free hand and cocked his arm.

Kaya, no! Lucas screamed, stumbling to reach her.

Die with dignity, little one, the man whispered and pierced Kaya’s chest with his blade.

Kaya gasped. Her body went limp, dangling from the man’s hand like a puppet. The attacker’s swirling blade of energy dispersed into thin air as he released her body.

No! Lucas screamed, falling to his knees.

    Such a brave girl. Pity.

K…Kaya, Lucas cried, crawling next to her still body. He gently nestled her head in his arms, caressing her face as he whispered to her.

If it’s any comfort to you boy you will be meeting her soon, the man said.

Lucas rocked with Kaya as he watched the shadow of the murderer’s spectral blade form next to him. The killer cocked his hand into the air in preparation for a killing blow.

Do it, Lucas whispered, dropping his head in defeat.

The man grinned and swung the pulsing blade, leaving a ghostly after image as his blade slashed through the air.

Kaya! Maya screamed as the horrific vision jarred her awake.

Maya’s scream startled the horses. Mason quickly restrained the frightened steeds with a few coaxing tugs against the reins. Maya covered her gawking mouth. She began to sob when the image of her lifeless sister flashed through her mind.

Lady, Maya, are you alright in there?

Maya took a breath, another, then another, forcing herself to remain calm. I…I’m fine, Mason. It was just a nightmare.

Mason nodded and returned his attention to the horses.

I can’t lose you, Kaya. I won’t lose you, Maya whispered.

When the carriage finally arrived in Loxx the bustling city greeted her with its usual fervor of cheering citizens and respectful bows. The many inhabitants packed the streets in preparation for the annual festival of heroes that the city held in honor of the warriors that defeated Beldazon and brought peace to Zannondale. Maya watched the city’s inhabitants from the carriage window decorate their homes while others danced to the ballads of musicians wandering the streets.

    We have arrived, lady Maya.

Mason pulled the reins and guided the horses to a standstill. He leaped from his seat and opened Maya’s door with an eager smile.

Thank you, Mason. Please stay in town if you wish.

I intend to Madam. I was rather hoping to enjoy the festivities.

Then enjoy the festivities you shall, Mason, Maya replied with a smile.

Thank you, lady Maya, Mason replied, bowing with his hat in hand.

Mason wrangled the horses and carriage toward the stables as Maya approached the castle. She examined the vibrant decorations draping from the citadel and surrounding buildings. Many of the city’s inhabitants had become novice practitioners of magic ever since Rin’s teachings had become commonplace years prior and the townsfolk used various spells in their everyday lives. From cooking, washing, to even romance, they indulged themselves in the magical arts to ease their everyday burdens, including the dispersal of the extravagant decorations strewn throughout the city. Maya’s wandering eyes caught sight of a massive newly constructed statue of two dragons locked in conflict in the city square.

Well, hello there, young lady, a familiar voice called. Maya turned to see Julius approaching with open arms.

Julius! She exclaimed, hugging him tightly.

    How have you been, Maya?

I wish I could say great but that would be a lie.

Tell me, child, Julius insisted, walking with her toward the castle.

I will once we have gathered inside the castle. Where are the others?

Dorian and Xia are already inside. I believe I saw Bartas around here somewhere. I haven’t seen Dain or Kara yet.

Looks like we made good time. I’m surprised I got here so quickly.

Well, once Beldazon fell, roads once blocked by bandits and debris were cleared, facilitating faster travel. Our homes now seem but a stone’s throw away from each other.

Maya glanced toward the Droragorian statue. So, Julius, is this a statue of the battle between you and Beldazon? She asked.

Yes, I believe it is, Julius replied with a stern glance.

    What? You don’t like it?

It’s a beautiful statue. However, what it means is much more powerful.

    What do you mean?

My race was once thought to be nothing but a myth. A fairy tale lost to time. Now humans are once again aware of our existence in this world. I worry that the fear the humans once felt for us will return. I fear there are dark times ahead, Maya.

Sadly, I agree, she replied as they neared the castle doors.

Halt! State your name and business here, the guard ordered.

You idiot, don’t you recognize them? It’s the hero Julius and the princess’ sister. Stand down, you fool, the second guard ordered.

Julius laughed. Maya smiled and shook her head.

I…I am so sorry sir and ma’am. I didn’t know. Please come right in, the guard frantically replied and beckoned them inside with shaky hands.

I’m sorry, Lady Maya. He’s the new guy. He still doesn’t know up from down, the second guard explained.

    It’s quite alright.

Maya and Julius entered the fortress and ascended the grand staircase. I’m going to speak to my sister. Try to find the others and gather in the throne room. I will meet you there, Maya said.

    Understood, Julius replied.

Julius veered right, as Maya went left. She analyzed the various segments of her premonitions on the way to her sister’s room, muttering under her breath, trying to work out how best to tell Kaya about the visions. When Maya rounded the corridor corner she nearly bumped into Lucas.

Maya! It’s good to see you. I got your mental message or whatever you call it. I have to say it is quite creepy, Lucas greeted.

You’re not the first person to tell me that.

If you’re looking for Kaya she’s in her room getting fitted for a new dress. She has been a little shaken up ever since last night. She kept telling me that you were in some kind of trouble or were in pain, Lucas replied.

We are twins, Lucas. We have a special bond.

I don’t doubt it. You two are like two sides of a coin.

Yes, we are. By the way, Julius went to gather the others, please make your way to the throne room as soon as you can, Maya urged.

You got it, Maya. I’ll see you there, Lucas replied and continued down the hallway.

Maya approached her sister’s door and knocked three times.

Who is it? Kaya called out.

    It’s your better half.

Maya heard rapid footsteps approach the door and a fussy woman’s voice telling Kaya to be still. The moment the door swung open Kaya had latched herself onto her sister, embracing her with an explosion of bubbly excitement. I’ve missed you so much, sis! Kaya exclaimed.

    I missed you too, Kaya.

Ma’am I haven’t finished fitting the dress yet, the seamstress griped.

It’s okay, Eugenia. We can finish later. This is important, Kaya replied.

Yes, ma’am, Eugenia replied. Hello, Maya. Don’t keep her too long. I don’t like leaving my work unfinished.

I won’t, Eugenia. Thank you. Eugenia closed the door as she left. Stand back and let me look at you, sis.

Kaya took a step back giggling. Kaya’s beautiful vibrant eyes glowed with excitement. How do I look? Kaya asked, spinning in a circle, giggling.

You look beautiful, sis, Maya replied with a sad smile.

Kaya noticed Maya’s familiar glance of worry and anxiety. She smiled and stepped closer. I know something is bothering you, sis. I can feel it. Talk to me.

Maya smiled and began to tear up. She looked as if she were in pain and hugged her sister tighter than she ever had before.

Sis, are you crying? Please don’t cry. We don’t live that far away. We can visit anytime. It will all be okay. I promise.

    It’s not that, Kaya.

Kaya smiled and wiped her sister’s tears away. Maya, I love you. You know you can tell me anything. Talk to me.

Maya wiped her eyes and collected herself. I had a vision three years ago on your wedding day. I couldn’t make out what was going on but I saw several hooded figures in what appeared to be a resurrection ceremony of some sort. I saw a hand protruding from a large mirror in a dark room. I remember back then that I felt dread. Like something was wrong, but I thought nothing of it at the time. I just wanted to enjoy your wedding and lose myself in happy memories, but, recently I keep having this one particular vision. Each time I have it the emotions and the fear that I feel become stronger, Maya explained.

Kaya listened carefully as her sister continued.

I keep having a dream of a grand city in ruins. The hooded figures from my vision three years ago are destroying the city, but I can’t make out their faces or their motives. I didn’t recognize any landmarks, so I’m not sure which city is being destroyed. My vision then shifts to you running through the woods and you’re being pursued by the cloaked figures. One of them gets a hold of you and Y–you… Maya hesitated. She couldn’t say it.

    I what, sis?

You died, Kaya. They kill you in front of Lucas. Then…they kill him too. I couldn’t stop it. I keep living this nightmare over and over again and it won’t stop. I have to watch you and Lucas die almost every night, Kaya. I c…can’t let it happen, Maya explained, tears shimmering in her eyes.

Kaya smiled and hugged her sister tightly. We won’t let that happen, sis. I know we will find a way to change it. Our father never let fate stop him. We can’t give up because we have been dealt a bad hand. We’ll be okay, sis. I promise.

Kaya? You have grown so much.

I always tell you, sis, you need to open up. Find someone special. If they are the right one you learn and grow together. You make each other stronger. I’ve learned a lot from Lucas and him from me.

Maya released her sister wiping her eyes.

You’re a silly one, Kaya, you know that?

Yep, Kaya replied with a bubbly giggle.

Now, let’s go tell the others so we can prevent this from ever happening. We have to maintain the peace, sis. We have these gifts now and yours may be the most important of all. Don’t be afraid of your visions. Act, Maya, don’t fear. Fear cripples your ability to shape your future. Don’t let your fear hamper your ability to act, Kaya replied.

Maya smiled. You sound just like mom.

Kaya returned her gesture, all giggles again. It was a sound Maya loved. It always comforted her in her time of need. Let’s go, she said. The sisters left the room together, hands clasped, headed to their friends in the throne room.

    Chapter 3: Reunion

When Maya and Kaya entered the throne room their friends conversed among themselves, eagerly awaiting their arrival.

There they are! It’s good to see you two again! Xia exclaimed.

Likewise! The sisters replied in tandem.

Still finishing each other’s sentences, I see, Dorian said.

Of course, the sisters replied in tandem again.

Wow, Kaya! You have really grown. You look beautiful in that dress. Reminds me of the time Siena wore that red leggy dress for my birthday, Bartas complimented, gripping his chin and grinning.

Siena slapped Bartas on the back of the head glaring at him, displeased by his perverted grin.

I know that look, Bartas. Don’t you dare go there, she said, nodding toward Nolan’s smiling face.

Sorry, hun, Bartas replied, rubbing the back of his head.

Father, what is she talking about? Nolan asked curiously.

Bartas laughed and pulled his son closer. I will explain when you get a tad older, kid.

Siena crossed her arms, shaking her head with a creeping smile.

Still having trouble with this old pirate, huh, Siena, Rin jested, joining them in conversation.

    Of course.

Hey, those days are behind me, Rin. And It’s good to see you, too, Batas greeted.

Where are Dain and Kara? Lucas asked.

    Late as usual, Rin replied.

I’m going to take a wild guess and say that it’s probably Dain’s fault, Dorian theorized.

They all shared a brief laugh, tickled by Dain and Kara’s lack of timeliness in almost every situation. The throne room doors suddenly burst open. Dain and Kara hurried into the room, panting.

There you are. We were just talking about you two, Xia said.

I’m sorry we’re so late. Someone decided to lose his boots just before we were about to leave. We spent an extra half an hour looking for them and when we finally found them they were exactly where he left them. Under the bed! Kara scorned.

    Yep, Dain’s fault, Dorian murmured.

Dain cleared his throat and smirked. If you will recall, Kara, I left my boots on the floor at the edge of the bed. If you would also recall, those boots were still there before you and I had our little session last night.

Your point being? Kara questioned, crossing her arms, her eyes daring him to continue.

Well, maybe if you didn’t flail like a wild animal my boots wouldn’t have been kicked under the bed.

Kara stood smirking, arms crossed, and hips cocked in defiance. Kaya and Xia locked eyes snickering. Bartas and Dorian took a step away from the feuding lovers, prepping themselves for the fallout of Dain’s accusation. As Dain’s mouth opened to speak again Kara interrupted. Say one more word and I will give you something to flail about, Dainith, Kara threatened with an evil smirk.

Dain closed his mouth and looked away. Yes, ma’am. Kara uncrossed her arms and joined Xia.

I still lost my sock because of you… Dain murmured.

    What was that?

    Nothing…Hun…nothing.

Dorian stepped toward Dain with a wide smile shaking his head. I see she is still currently ruling your kingdom, Dainith, Dorian joked.

    Don’t go there.

Oh, it’s all in good fun, but at least we know who wears the pants in your family. Bartas jested, sharing a laugh with Dorian.

Oh, go ahead. Laugh it up, you two. All I know is, despite how mad she is at me right now, and despite if she wears the pants, I can guarantee that those pants will be off. I’m still going to have a better night than you two, Dain replied.

Dorian and Bartas stared at Dain with puzzling glances. How so? I don’t consider a black eye a better night, Dain, Dorian retorted.

Like I once said, she does things with her body that I dare not speak of, Dorian, Dain replied with a crooked smile.

Dorian and Bartas remained silent, still staring blankly. Touché, Dorian replied

I’ll give you that one, kid, Bartas said with a conceding wave.

While the reunited friends reminisced, Julius and Diamos entered the throne room, being sure to close the doors behind them. Julius tapped Maya’s shoulder nodding for her to begin.

All right everyone please listen closely. What I have to say is of the utmost importance and could mean life and death, Maya urged.

The group gathered around Maya as she began to explain the nature of her visions and the impending doom that was to befall the continent of Zannondale. When Maya had finished her story, the group stood in silence. The horrible truth of Maya’s visions sank into their minds, embedding itself like a nagging gnat.

M…my son and Kaya are to be killed? Diamos questioned.

Lucas placed his hand on his father’s shoulder with intentions to comfort the worried king. I won’t let it happen, father. I won’t let anything happen to me or Kaya, Lucas confidently proclaimed. He approached Kaya and held her close.

That’s quite a vision, Maya. Do you have any idea when this will happen? Julius asked.

No, but I feel the time is nearing. It may happen sometime soon because my visions have become more intense as time has passed.

Well then. We should send out a warning to all the major cities to prepare for an attack. In the meantime, I will alert the Loxx military. We will increase our defensive measures to protect the city from any impending attacks, Diamos suggested.

    Good idea, Dorian acknowledged.

Will the other kingdoms follow suit? I mean…asking them to buckle down at the whim of a vision is asking a bit much, don’t you think? Bartas asked.

I would agree with you but tales of the Droragorian’s abilities have reached far and wide since Beldazon’s defeat. Maya’s mental capabilities are well known to the other kingdoms. They will listen. I’m sure of it, Diamos assured.

What about the festival? Should we call it off? Lucas asked.

No, we should proceed with the festival as planned. I don’t want the people to start panicking. We need the festival to keep spirits high, but in the meantime, we will prepare for the worst, Diamos explained.

Then let’s make preparations and get the festival underway, Xia stated.

While the festival and army are being prepared, Julius and I will gather as much information on the cloaked figures that Maya described, Rin suggested.

Good idea, Rin. Dorian, while Lucas and Diamos are readying the army, I want you to take the others and help prepare for the festival, Julius ordered.

    Of course.

As Dorian and the others left, Xia grasped Maya’s arm and pulled her aside. Maya, I am so sorry you have been carrying this burden for so long.

Thank you, Xia. It feels good to finally get it off my chest, but now I have an even more difficult task. I can’t let my sister and Lucas die. I have to do something.

We will think of something, Maya. I promise.

Xia hugged her worried friend and left the room. Maya caught wind of Julius and Rin’s conversation as she stood quietly in the doorway. A brief calm came over her. She smiled and approached Rin. Excuse me, Rin. I don’t mean to interrupt but can I ask you for a favor?

Of course, young lady. What is it that you need?

I know you are exceptionally good at creating medicines and potions, but can you make armor?

Hmm? Rin hummed, stroking his chin.

What are you concocting in that mind of yours, Rin? Julius asked.

Well, I’ll tell you this. After our battle with Beldazon, I had the rare opportunity to examine Julius’ battle armor. I deduced that against Beldazon’s might the suit held up quite well, even though Beldazon’s strength was enough to pierce the armor. Despite Beldazon’s power, the material that it is forged from is extremely resilient. I have never seen anything like it. I recorded all of my findings. I’m fairly confident I could replicate it, Rin replied.

Do you think the armor would be enough to stop a blade? Maya asked.

Hmm? I believe the armor may be strong enough to stop smaller weapons like knives, maybe even short swords. However, larger weapons would most likely pierce the armor.

    That’s a start, I suppose, Maya whispered.

    What was that? Rin asked.

Rin, I need you to make something for Kaya.

What did you have in mind?

I need you to make Kaya a suit.

Ah, I see. Well, I suppose I could get to work on that if Julius thinks he can handle digging up any information on those cloaked figures.

I think I can manage. Maya’s request is of great importance.

Right, then, Rin confirmed and continued. We won’t let your vision come to pass, Maya. We will prevent these phantasms from causing harm to anyone. I will get to work on that suit right away.

    Thank you, Rin.

Now, please join the others in preparing the festival, and try to take your mind off that horrible vision, Julius encouraged.

    Yes, Julius.

Rin and Julius politely bowed and went their respective ways. Maya joined her friends in the city center to assist with the festival preparations. The citizens surrounded them in a frenzied mob of praise nearly everywhere they went. The young warriors aided many pedestrians with their decorations and entertained curious onlookers until dusk neared. Xia helped the town baker put up the last of his colorful banners. He stepped away from his business with raised hands and a satisfied smile. This looks perfect! Thank you, great one.

You can just call me Xia. I am no goddess.

Many would beg to differ. You and your friends have done great things for Zannondale. You are worthy of such praise.

Thank you, but really, Xia will do just fine.

Very well. Thank you for your assistance, Xia. Now I must tend to my bakery before my dog gets to the goods again.

    Again?

Damn fool ate half my reserves last week. Then looked at me with these big dough eyes to soften me up. I swear that dog has it out for me.

Xia giggled as the man stepped back inside his bakery. She glanced toward Kara in the distance as she awed a group of children with a magical display of flapping doves. The flying phantasms twirled between the children as if lost in dance. The children’s chuckles made Xia smile. A moment of silent reverence befell Xia as she watched the children play. She glanced toward Dorian smiling then joined Kara, sharing in their joyful spectacle.

After a long day of preparation Dorian and his friends gathered next to the dragon statue. They took in the fruits of their labor, gazing down the vibrant city streets while they rested. The array of oranges, reds, and yellows exuded excitement and happiness. Inhabitants walked the streets talking while the laughter of children lingered in the air.

Great job everyone. The festival will begin tomorrow, so let’s head in for dinner. I believe we are done here, Kaya declared.

I agree. I’m exhausted, Dain replied, doubling over panting.

Oh, come on, Dain. We just put up decorations, Kara teased.

Correction, you put up decorations. Dorian and I did all the heavy lifting for the shopkeepers.

You’re such a maiden. I’ll make it up to you later, Kara replied, patting him on the head.

The tired friends returned to the castle for the evening as night fell. Dorian and Dain walked together, regaling each other of their recent exploits.

How have you and Kara been? Dorian questioned.

We’ve been great. We hit a few snags in our marriage along the way, but for the most part, we’re doing well. How are you and Xia?

The same, I suppose. We fight sometimes, but I learned quickly that it is best to just let her win most of the arguments to avoid further conflict, Dorian replied, smirking.

Oh, you have no idea. When Kara argues it’s like a volcano just erupted. I used to tell myself I let her win all the arguments to avoid more conflict, like you, but to be honest, I think I’m just genuinely scared of her.

Xia and Kara secretly observed their husband’s conversation, intrigued by their laughter.

What are you boys talking about over here? Xia questioned.

It’s nothing. We were just catching up with each other, Dorian replied.

Kara and Xia glanced at each other smiling before walking ahead.

You think they heard us? Dain asked.

    Most likely, Dorian replied.

Maya followed closely behind, staring at the ground. She stopped at the main entrance glancing back at the transformed city. The spectacle gave her hope, hope that her vision would never come to pass. She smiled and entered the castle. Before bed the group of friends shared a nostalgic, story filled dinner together. They regaled each other of recent experiences and childhood stories. Maya smiled as the stories made their rounds, feigning attention. An ever-present weight of dread still lingered, casting a shade of doubt over everything she did. It hounded her, sapping her of joy. She stared at her plate of steaming food as if she were in a trance.

Sis, are you okay? Kaya asked.

Hmm. Oh, yeah. I’m okay. I’m just not that hungry.

Kaya slid her hand toward her sister, locking hands as tight as their bond. Everything will be okay, sis. I promise. Please eat something.

Maya smiled and nodded. Kaya returned to her conversation with the other’s as Maya ate a small bite of finely cooked beef from her steaming plate. She smiled at her sister while she laughed and conversed with the others. Maya wanted to enjoy their happy reunion, but her powerful feelings of dread eclipsed her ability. After their eventful dinner, a warm summer breeze swept across the city and darkness blanketed the countryside. The castle grounds had grown quiet until only the faint sounds of Rin tinkering in his workshop persisted. Kaya gazed into the city below from her window. The moonlight bathed her room in an illuminating glow of blue.

Kaya, are you all right? Lucas asked upon entering.

Yes. I’m fine. Close the door.

Kaya stood from her seat at the window seal and approached Lucas.

    You look beautiful, Lucas said.

Kaya smiled and caressed Lucas’ face. Kiss me, she whispered.

Lucas leaned closer, kissing Kaya’s lips with the softest of touches. Kaya rested her head against his chest as he pulled away. If we really are going to die, Lucas, I want us to enjoy each other’s company one last time, Kaya said.

Don’t say that, Kaya. We are not going to die. I promise. I will never let that happen. I would give my life before I ever let anything happen to you.

Kaya buried her head into Lucas’ chest. His scent comforted her, making her smile grow a size. I love you, Lucas, she whispered.

Those words never meant a thing to me until I met you. Tonight, I can honestly say I love you more than anything, Kaya, Lucas replied and kissed her again.

Nearly an hour later, Maya lay awake in her room unable to sleep. Her wandering mind pondered her troubling visions. The sense of dread that she had felt began to lessen in the company of her friends, yet she still felt the danger looming nearby. She took a deep breath, filling her lungs to the brim, and closed her eyes as she exhaled. Thoughts of her sister’s demise still raced through her mind.

I should go check on Kaya.

Maya jumped out of bed and walked to her sister’s room.

    Enjoying the preview?
