About this ebook
The slavers who capture Kelyn's youthful hunting pack also threaten her village--which depends on the meat and trade pelts the pack brings in from the harsh land of Ketura. But except for Kelyn, the pack is drugged…and Kelyn's nickname is Kelyn the Clumsy...
A Wolverine's Daughter short story in the Outlands world.

About Wolverine's Daughter:
"When a sword and sorcery book begins with humor, it's fairly well guaranteed to be an excellent read.... This book whips along with impressive fight choreography, excellent background descriptions, and fascinating plotlines."
--Kliatt
"With this new book, Doranna Durgin ventures into classic sword & sorcery -- and turns the subgenre upside down.... And I like Kelyn, who could kick Red Sonyas steel bikini-clad butt from introduction to epilogue. Fantasy fans in general will love this book, but it has extra appeal for feminists and for warriors of the female persuasion."
--Hypatia's Hoard
"Furious action, clever rescues and a touch of romance make this a wonderful read."
Hannah Steenbock, author of Dorelle's Journey
"Kelyn is clumsy. Incredibly clumsy. Except when she's not - and when she's not, she's an incredible fighter. And she doesn't know the "why" of either state of being. Maybe she's cursed. Maybe it's the famous warrior father she never met, known only as The Wolverine. What's a girl to do? Go find out, of course.
"Kelyn's journey - quest, really - to find the man who sired her, and the adventures she has along the way is a great, fast, read (fast, because you won't be able to put it down). Durgin has a gift for creating richly layered characters who you can't help but love and root for, as they go over, under or through the many obstacles and trials the author throws their way. Lots of action, great characters, and prose that sparkles with wit and humor."

Doranna Durgin
Doranna Durgin spent her childhood filling notebooks first with stories and art, then with novels. After obtaining a degree in wildlife illustration and environmental education, she spent a number of years deep in the Appalachian Mountains. When she emerged, it was as a writer who found herself irrevocably tied to the natural world and its creatures - and with a new touchstone to the rugged spirit that helped settle the area, which she instills in her characters. Dun Lady's Jess, Doranna's first published fantasy novel, received the 1995 Compton Crook/Stephen Tall award for the best first book in the fantasy, science fiction and horror genres; she now has fifteen novels of eclectic genres on the shelves and more on the way. Most recently, she's leaped gleefully into the world of action-romance. When she's not writing, Doranna builds author web sites, wanders around outside with a camera and works with horses and dogs - currently, she's teaching agility classes. There's a Lipizzan in her backyard, a mountain looming outside her office window, a pack of agility dogs romping in the house and a laptop sitting on her desk - and that's just the way she likes it.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is a short story prequel to a novel I have not read. Though a stand alone story in terms of action, the reader is given very few clues about the genre, time, place, or society. In their absence, I assumed the over-used pseudo-medieval other world setting common to much fantasy (which I assume this is).The story is a simple but well-told good guys versus bad guys plot, without any moral complexities, and a tragic note at the beginning is introduced and then abandoned. I'm sufficiently intrigued to seek out the novel, and hopeful that the longer work provides more character and story depth, in addition to strong narrative skills.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I received this book through the LibraryThing early reviewers for an honest review.I did read the Wolverine’s daughter first which was a very good story. Emerging Legacy is also a good short story to go into the background of Kelyn and her culture. Kelyn is a clumsy person who is growing into her heritage and abilities as a fighter. I enjoyed this short story and would recommend it even to read prior to reading Wolverine’s daughter.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Not bad. I was afraid it would spoil the beginning of Wolverine's Daughter - if she was competent in this story, wouldn't it change how the others treated her? But that was dealt with. Nice little story - a real threat, dealt with by brains and local knowledge rather than brawn - or at least, brawn didn't play a part until the end. And it let Kelyn start to find her footing - only start, but start. Of course now I need to reread Wolverine's Daughter.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This a nice quick glimpse into Kelyn, the Wolverines daugter's world. Tight and engrossing you get a quick feel for Kelyn, her pack and her culture. Reading this short story made me glad I had all ready purchased the first book in the series.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I enjoyed this book. I wish I would have read this one first before the wolverines daughter. I think I would have enjoyed that book more.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A really good short story. Even though it's a short story, you get a good idea of the main character personality, and her clumsiness is actually believable the way it's written. Good pacing, nicely written, cleverness: everything I look for in a good fantasy story, my only wish was that this would be a full story :) Actually, the preface of the short story mentions this is a short prequel to the main book and I must say this short story was good enough for me to hunt down the book and put it on my wishlist for future purchase. Looking forward to reading more about Kelyn. 4 stars, a great entertaining read.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A prelude story to the Wolverine's daughter series introduces the readers to clumsy Kelyn who doesn't prove to be all that clumsy when she saves her pack mate lives from slavers.
