Fools Gold #1 - Raven Coyne

    Fool’s Gold Part #1

    A Brass Stars Adventure

    Raven Coyne

Two Federal soldiers just as the Colonel had promised.  The squad moves in slowly, I keep myself behind so I can see each man. We reach the Federals who look us up and down and say Something you want?

Smiley answers Yeah, the gold so saying he pulls his revolver and starts shooting. The Federals are caught off guard and go down fast from Smiley’s fusillade. Tillman starts his inane giggling and hops down and starts looking through the wagon.  I got it! He says and pulls forth a small strongbox about the size of a safety deposit box. Smiley tosses his pistol to the ground then he and Tillman look for the key to the box on the federal’s bodies.  They grasp the key and open the box. Both are like children with a new toy.  I watch this display and notice the Indian still sits his horse which makes my plan that much harder. I figured they’d all be crowded around the box. Bigger easier target.  But at least everyone’s attention is focused on the box.

Smiley looks up at me and says Ya know something Captain. Even if you are a son of a bitch you sure got grit. Lookie! This’ll keep Marsh Robert going for a month or two.

Might keep one man the rest of his life, I answer.

To which Smiley nods and says Yeah reckon so. Looking back up at me Smiley’s face drops as he looks at my two pistols aimed right at him.

So do I I answer and pull the triggers. Smiley and Tillman drop fast with two balls in them. The Indian turns with a snarl and goes for his gun. I finish off all five shots remaining in my right-hand pistol into him and save the left just in case the first five don’t do the trick.  I was a bit lavish with the shot and powder but I didn’t want the Indian chasing me for the rest of time.  He’d follow me to hell if that was what it took to scalp me. The Indian falls off his horse heavily. Walking over I pick up the box and mount Chimborazo and lead him away from the dead.

The next part of the plan will take a little more finesse and some of my new found wealth to get across the Mississippi and away from Louisiana.  I’ve already got everything planned out. I know once the CSA figures out I stole the money for myself they’ll send some agents to find me. That trash will plan on me going south toward Mexico. That’s why Canada sounds appealing to me.  Taking a riverboat north would be easier, but I don’t want to be confined to a boat once the hunt is on. I always want some running room. I head down to New Orleans and my best attempt to get a head start.
