Woman on Fire - Victoria Ellis
Woman on Fire
My heart pumps fire
that flows through my veins,
warming me up on winter nights.
I feel it coursing deep down—
in my arms, my legs, throughout my torso,
and up and down my back—
relentlessly.
I finally turn to face the mirror
and my eyes, too,
have been swept away
by my fire’s current—
set ablaze with the emotion of
a thousand women
who have been suppressed.
I will be the voice for those
who can’t speak for themselves.
I will be the hands
to help them off the ground.
I will be,
I will be,
I will be,
if they let me.

I remember the feeling of freedom I had—
leaving him.
I went out with friends to celebrate and
felt like I was invincible, safe, finally going down a different and better path.
The sky was dark
and we were on our backs,
counting the stars, which were infinite
and close enough to touch in our minds
as we drank the night away.
Smoke filled our lungs and
the flames rose higher and higher,
and I excused myself before going inside
to use the bathroom.
My skin was sticky with sweat,
my face rosy, the liquor hitting me too
