N9NE Teen Ghosts Volume 5 - Ron Knight

    Part 1

Ben returned to the house after he dropped Eden off at the bus station.

Nikki and Shelby stood in the cemetery, gazing at the headstones.

    Gustin 12/5/2009.

    Bama 10/9/2009.

They couldn’t look at the others.

The sky disappeared behind the frigid September clouds. A light mist of rain churned from the north. Shelby cleared her throat, once again looking at Bama’s headstone. Why did Ms. Spears come back?

I don’t know. Nikki didn’t want to talk about Ms. Spears, but if that’s what Shelby wanted, then Nikki would do her best.

Shelby cleared her throat again and wiped the wetness off her face. The cold mist of rain quickly soaked their clothes. Ms. Spears totally went insane. I don’t think she was working with Trina Hoover.

Nikki: Neither do I, but something happened to Ms. Spears. She was like a different person.

Shelby turned and looked at Nikki. Are we insane?

Nikki forced a grin. Well, we are teenagers.

Shelby gave Nikki a tearful pat on the shoulder. They walked from the cemetery, taking several quick glances back.

The mist of rain followed them up the porch. When they walked inside the house, the warm air was like a comfortable hug. Ben had the fireplace roaring and even made the girl’s lunch.

Grilled ham and cheese sandwiches, Ben said, holding two paper plates with a sandwich on each. You both need to eat something.

Nikki and Shelby took a seat at the kitchen table. The wetness in their hair dripped to the floor as they ate. Afterwards they went upstairs to Ben’s room, dried off and changed clothes.

Shelby plopped down on the bed. I’m exhausted. Wake me up if you see a purple ghost lurking around.

Nikki smiled, kissed Shelby on the cheek, then stepped into the hallway and shut the door.

Her eyes drifted from the stairs, to the master bedroom door which was smashed into pieces. She approached the Thurston bedroom, but didn’t go any further.

A minute went by. Then another.

Finally she stepped over the broken door and went inside. The yellow sticky notes tossed from the floor. Nikki walked over them, glancing at the walls.

So many notes. What did they all say? Why did Lyle and Molly Thurston keep them in here?

Nikki moved slowly , making her way into the bathroom.

    Click.

    Click.

    Click.

She kneeled down into the red haze of blood. Was this from Bama? Ms. Spears? Maybe both?

Nikki crawled toward the tub like a wounded lion. Her hands and fingers smeared the blood across the floor. The knees of her pants became tarnished with red stains.

    Click.

    Click.

    Click.

The tub was empty, but Nikki could still envision Josia’s body under the water, drowned by the yellow ghost and old clothing provided by the Thurston’s.

Now the tub had a red stain. This must have been where Bama tried to escape, but she couldn’t hide from the bloody knife held by Ms. Spears.

A warm touch moved along her arms. Nikki sat on the bloody floor, her back to the tub. Her ghost had arrived, but the touch was familiar in a different way.
