"Hey, Miacorns! Welcome back to Mia’s Life!"
I said those words to begin every YouTube video on my channel, but they never got old.
"As you can see, today, I’m barefaced, and I’m going to show you the new toner that’s been so incredible for my skin," I explained to the camera, holding up a hot-pink bottle. When I was making videos, it was easy to forget that more than one million people subscribed to my channel. Instead, it felt like it was just me, playing with makeup and talking about things I loved. That’s really how Mia’s Life started—I’d always loved sharing about my life! But now, I had a pretty popular YouTube channel. Okay…more like super popular. My videos weren’t just seen by my family, but by people all over the world. It was my very own show, where I could show my life and talk about things average girls go through.
Like acne. Ugh!
I was just about to tell my viewers (a.k.a. the Miacorns!) why vitamin B3 is so important for your skincare routine when my phone buzzed with a reminder.
Find Sienna’s bday present—ASAP!
I groaned, leaning over and flicking off the camera. Toner and foundation would have to wait. My little sister, Sienna, was going to be nine years old in just five days. And I still didn’t have a gift for her!
I took out my favorite journal and tapped my pencil, trying to get my creative juices flowing. Staring through the huge window in my room overlooking the backyard usually helped me get imaginative.
Things Sienna loved: Karma and Koa, our little sister and brother. Space. Vegan ice cream. Wonder Woman. Being in videos with me.
So maybe, like…a picture of all of us dressed like astronauts while we ate ice cream?
Ugh. I was drawing a complete blank.
Mom poked her head into my room. Hey, sweetheart. Still filming?
Some parents would probably be weirded out by their kid making videos for millions of people, but not mine. Mom and Dad loved that I made videos—in fact, sometimes we made them all together! They were super supportive, especially because I was learning a ton about owning a small business and internet safety. Mom helped me brainstorm videos all the time, while Dad helped manage a lot of my sponsor deals.
I shook my head. No. I’m trying to think of ideas for Sienna’s birthday present.
Hmm. Any good ideas?
Um…homemade ice cream that’s space-flavored?
Mom wrinkled her nose. What on earth is space-flavored? No pun intended.
I threw my hands in the air. "I don’t know! I’m thinking out loud, here! What about a new shirt or something? A Wonder Woman one? Is that too dorky?"
Mom shrugged. Well, you’d better hurry. You only have five days.
Don’t remind me,
I grumbled.
Down the hall, Koa started crying. He was only six months old and needed a ton of attention. Sometimes it could be frustrating to be woken up in the middle of the night, but I loved having a tiny baby around. He was cute, squishy, and the ultimate pick-me-up.
Somebody needs to be held,
Mom said. Keep brainstorming. You’ll think of something.
I knew she was right, but I still felt a lot of pressure. I couldn’t believe Sienna was going to be nine! Besides, we’d probably film her entire birthday morning. That meant millions of people would be watching her open whatever gift I gave her. What if she hated it? Or what if she didn’t know what it was? Or what if—
My phone buzzed again, and I glanced at it. It was a text from my best friend, Briony. I didn’t get to see her very much anymore, since I started homeschooling this year. Our family traveled a lot, and besides, I needed more time to work on my channel. Sometimes, I thought I learned more from Mia’s Life than I did in school. I could
