Alternative Medicine In Under An Hour - Elena Upton, Ph.D.

    INTRODUCTION

The goal of this book is to train future thinkers…

Thinkers who understand the body is designed to heal itself

Thinkers who practice due-diligence when choosing a doctor

Thinkers who give themselves time to make proper decisions concerning their medical procedures and therapies

Thinkers who can walk into a health food store or pharmacy and know, with confidence, that they can reach for natural medicines that they know will work

There was a time, at the turn of the last century, when natural medicine was revered and practiced alongside developing pharmaceuticals and emerging modern health practices. This trend continued in most countries of the world, but came to a screeching halt in the US. It is a part of our history that is rarely discussed and little is written about. The ‘Flexner Report’ was published in 1910 and on its own, delivered a stunning blow to the holistic medicine community in America. If you are interested in the facts surrounding the great divide that exists in the U.S. between complimentary medicine and the newly developed western model of health care you can read the complete report on line. It will give you a clear picture of how and why a holistic approach to healing has been minimized and even scorned.

If modern medicine held all the answers for cure, was not plagued with continuous spiraling costs and doctors were still the decision makers for the care of their patients (rather than insurance providers), books like this would not be necessary. After all, why would anyone need to look further? However, the reality is that many aspects of the modern system have gone awry and the statistics speak for themselves.

There are more pharmaceutical drugs dispensed in America than any other country in the world. Unfortunately, this is not making us a healthier nation. The United States is actually ranked 30th in the world for infant mortality rate (down 5 points from the previous year), we have the highest rate of autism in the world and we are ranked 50th in the world in the area of health overall. We are fast declining in health behind all other industrialized societies.

There are many areas of medicine, even with the new science, that has nothing to offer the patient. Basic aches and pains are pushed to the side with steroids, painkillers and even psychotropic drugs.

I personally believe there is a world where we can embrace both methods of treatment. If I were in an accident, I would want to be rushed to the finest medical facility to be patched up. But then I would check out as soon as possible so I could go home and take the natural remedies I know of, through decades of experience that will hasten my recovery.

If I needed lab testing for a digestive disorder after returning from a foreign land I would not hesitate; but then I would take the most effective natural remedies to treat the parasitic diagnosis.

If I needed evaluation after extensive dental work for the removal of old amalgam fillings, I would not hesitate; but if testing showed heavy metal poisoning I would use a proven natural protocol for heavy metal detoxification.

These are just a few of the many examples of ways in which natural medicine can be easily integrated into your life. The biggest news flash about using substances from nature is that there are no known side effects (especially with the use of Homeopathic medicines) and the cost is far lower than that of pharmaceutical drugs and treatments.

Manly P. Hall (1901-1991) the Canadian-born scholar and philosopher best known for his book, Secret Teachings of All Ages said, A great deal of sickness is due to thoughtlessness, and the antidote is thoughtfulness.

You can be in your own authority by taking control of your health and peering over the fence to a more natural way of life by adopting thoughtfulness. This book offers a look at natural medicine modalities that work with the energy systems of the body to assist in its innate healing abilities.

What brings health to the body brings peace to the mind and soul. All the values of life are clarified when we decide to put ourselves in order.

    CHAPTER I

    WHAT IS ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE?

Natural medicine, alternative medicine, complimentary medicine and holistic medicine all refer to modalities that use substances from nature to rebalance the body, bringing it back to a healthy state. The substances most often used by holistic doctors are derived from plant, animal or mineral components. Natural medicine follows the laws of nature and does not suppress symptoms, as chemical drugs do. They instead work with the innate intelligence of the body transferring information. This information is utilized by the body’s ability to know and understand what it needs to bring about health. This is why a remedy or herbal formula are not prescriptions to take forever. They instead ‘fix’ the issue and allow the body to express its true health.

An example of this natural ability of the body to balance itself is a discussion on histamine. Histamine can be found in all body tissue. It induces capillary dilation, which increases capillary permeability and lowers blood pressure; contraction of most smooth muscle tissue; increased gastric acid secretion; and acceleration of the heart rate. It is also a mediator of immediate hypersensitivity. You probably know histamine best by its affects during attacks of hay fever or other allergic reactions. The western model for counteracting the discomforts of allergies is by using anti-histamines. These products suppress the higher levels of histamine exhibited in the body during an ‘allergy attack’ to ward off foreign substances and therefore temporarily calms the discomfort. Alternative medicine products instead give the body a natural replica of histamine. Rather than suppressing the bodies’ natural reaction to ward off allergic encounters the normal histamine model calms the situation by helping the body to ‘self-adjust.’

The same can be said for fever reducing medicines. Over the counter western products suppress fever. In actuality, a fever (up to a certain point) is a good thing. It is the body’s natural defense in helping to kill off pathogens that cause illness. Natural medicines and remedies work with the body to resolve the initial cause of the fever and as a result the body temperature returns to normal.

I have my own opinions about medical care, what it is and what it should be. This opinion has developed after almost thirty years as a trained Homeopath and advocate of natural medicine. After reading this book you can form your own opinion based on a wider field of knowledge. Knowledge is power and with that power you have the ability to make correct and informed decisions for yourself and your loved ones.

Another striking difference between natural medicines and chemical drugs is energy. Addressing the energy patterns within the body is the common denominator within all natural medicine practices.

The five most popular natural therapies thriving in America today are Homeopathy, Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Chiropractic Medicine, Naturopathic Medicine and Osteopathic Medicine. (Also included is information on Ayurvedic Medicine.)

Ayurveda is the medicine of India and in the U.S. the herbs are often utilized within Naturopathic or even Chiropractic practices. However, it is difficult to find authentic Ayurvedic doctors in the states.

All of the therapies mentioned are based on ‘natural laws’ of healing and continue to thrive today more than ever. I have experienced each of them for myself, for my children, grandchildren and recommended them for clients whenever the need arose. They all have one factor in common, a respect for the innate nature of the body to heal itself through its own intelligence. That intelligence is driven by its own energy. Health is only possible when there is complete harmony of the energies that drive the functions of the body. If those energies are ignored, distorted, corrupted or violated, then there can be no health.

Each practice is its own approach to healing through that inborn intelligence and natural forces respecting the power of its vital force. Acupuncture is the use of needles inserted into specific points on the body to ‘move’ energy. Chiropractic Medicine adjusts the body to enable free-flow of energy. Homeopathy is the use of natural elements diluted and succussed (the energy of the substance is released by force into water and alcohol) and bottled to enhance the bodies vital force. Some forms of Osteopathic medicine use gentle touch to help guide the movement of energy into its proper patterns. Naturopathic Medicine uses supplements, herbs, remedies and treatments to support natural energetic healing.

All forms of Alternative medicine support the whole person, including their emotional state. When a doctor of Chinese medicine is reading your pulse he is interpreting information from your organ systems, as well as nuances from your mental/emotional state. When a Homeopath takes your case he or she is listening to a description of your physical symptoms and sensations, as well as clues to your emotional state. When the Osteopathic doctor brings his or her hands to the body to determine the sensations of energy movements they are connecting with your emotional patterns.

Each of the modalities is an approach…a very different approach from what we have come to know as western medical care that can set bones perfectly, arrest heart failure and efficiently sew up mangled limbs. This is part of an advancement we are all fortunate to benefit from in the 21st Century. However, there are methods of healing that exist within natural medicine that can further assist in conventional settings to gently guide the body back to a healthy state.

There are many illnesses that meet with superior results with the use of natural treatment.
