As they go on to college and pursue their lives, their love affair is cut short by an auto accident that leaves John in a coma. The doctors provide little hope for his recovery, but love refuses to give up.

While all the doctors talk about letting him go, Linda's memories of their intense love, keep hope alive. Can their love recover?

Alex Berens is a pseudonym for an author that has spent much of his life writing technical and medical books. He is an incurable romantic and writes romantic fiction as well as love poetry. He lives in Southwest Florida, USA with his wife of forty-plus years. They have a deep love relationship. When they first found their intense love, he wrote hundreds of poems about life and love. A few of them were published at the insistence of friends and relatives, but most of them remained in his files, – until now. After reading some of his poetry, a friend convinced him to publish them. He wrote the bulk of his poetry as he found love forty plus years ago and published much of it recently in two books. The first, Poetry of an Affair contains a group of fifty poems about love that mirror many of the scenes in his short story, Twenty-Nine and Never Been Kissed. The second, Poetry of Love and Life, contains an additional fifty poems, some about love, some about life. All poems are original and written during this intense, and still ongoing, love affair. Alex loves to communicate with readers and friends. Feel free to connect with him via email at – Alex.Berens@Embarqmail.com

Chapter 1 – Sept. 1963 – High School Biology Lab

It was the first week after summer break for the Sachem school district and the first day of classes for the students. Sachem high school is in Lake Ronkonkoma, a medium sized town on Long Island, in Suffolk county, NY.

John Romano had turned 18 over the summer and was anxious at finally being a high school senior. He had selected advanced biology as one of his elective classes to make his mother happy. Mama was adamant about him becoming a doctor and she thought this class would help. It didn't seem to matter much to her that John was more interested in becoming a journalist than a doctor. But, without making much ado about it with Mama, he had also signed up for the creative writing class as one of his electives.

John was a good-looking young man with typical Italian features. He was very muscular and into athletics. Not the usual football or basketball type, but the one-on-one competitive type. He had been playing four-wall racquetball since his older brother Paul, introduced him to the sport a couple of years before and was now a nationally ranked competitive player. His muscular structure communicated his agility. He surveyed the laboratory classroom as he walked into it. Unlike regular classrooms, this one had no student chairs or the usual classroom equipment. The few students already there were sitting on stools behind large laboratory tables. Several of them who were friends or knew John from other classes last year nodded or otherwise greeted him.

He moved to a bench next to his friend Larry and sat down on the nearby stool. Hey Larry, have you heard any more about the new Puerto Rican girl coming in? The school grapevine had been buzzing about a new female student transferring to Sachem from Puerto Rico.

Only her name, Linda Rodriguez. He replied.

John knew that the biology laboratory class would require each student be paired with another. Most teachers assigned the pairing alphabetically and his last name and hers started with the same two letters. Most likely, this would mean he would be paired with the new girl. I hope she's not a real dog, he thought as his imagination ran wild. She's probably short, fat, ugly and speaks only Spanish. He was already contemplating ways to get out of the pairing or be paired with one of his friends, or hopefully, one of the prettier girls in the class.

Students continued to walk into the room, in pairs and groups. John recognized just about every one of them as a former classmate or a student he had seen before at the school.  Except one!

As Linda Rodriguez walked into his biology lab class, John was blown away. Like most of the other boys in the class, he couldn′t take his eyes off her. Linda was drop dead gorgeous, with long blondish brown hair pulled into a cute ponytail and bright emerald green eyes. She was wearing light blue shorts and a matching long sleeved sweater. She filled her clothes as well or better than most professional clothing models.  Every guy in the class was offering her a place to land, but she chose a workbench up front, next to a nerdy looking girl.

Mrs. Green, the biology teacher began calling student names and assigning lab partners. As John had thought, Mrs. Green was calling names alphabetically, and sure enough, Linda was assigned as John's  partner at lab bench number four. As they both moved to their assigned spot, John kept watching her.

Well, maybe I should learn a little Spanish, he thought, as he admired her more closely.

Hi. I'm Linda, she smiled and extended her hand to him. They locked eyes for a moment. He was drawn in by the intensity of her emerald green eyes as she slowly passed them over his muscular body, especially lingering on has biceps and chest. He had a pink shirt on with the top two buttons open and she could see a light sprinkling of light brown hair on his chest.

Glad to meet you. I'm John.Man. She is beautiful and her eyes are intoxicating.

He extended his hand to meet hers and when their hands clasped, he felt as if an electric current passed between them. Linda felt it too. Her immediate reaction was to draw back but she held his hand for a long moment before releasing it. As their hands parted, their eyes met again and locked. The electricity seemed to connect them together and the few minutes of locked eyes confirmed they both felt it.

Their first lab assignment was to inventory the glassware and other items on their bench. As the other students settled in, John took the list Mrs. Green had provided and started reading off the items on it, constantly looking at Linda to guess if she was understanding him.  One-by-one Linda passed each piece to him and he checked it off the list. Linda looked over his shoulder as he check-marked each piece, until they had handled each one. – Seems like she can at least read English.

Mrs. Green,  she called out in perfect English,  We're missing a twenty-ounce beaker.

OK. We'll get you one out of the supply room.

Well. Maybe I won't need to learn Spanish, after all. When she first introduced herself, he was concentrating on checking out her body – so he didn′t really remember her voice.

Your assignment for today is to dissect this frog and identify it's internal organs. bellowed Mrs. Green as she walked up the lane between the lab benches, passing out to each bench, a cardboard dish holding a crucified frog. John's stomach churned a little as he handed the frog's cardboard coffin to Linda. Their eyes met and he was blown away by their intensity. Wow! Her emerald green eyes looked as if they were back-lit.

Do you want to do the first cut? she asked, looking directly into his eyes.

No. You go right ahead. he replied, trying to sound magnanimous.

With that Linda grabbed a surgical scissor and began to cut the frog's skin open from the neck down. As she peeled the skin back exposing some of the internal organs, John's stomach quickly rebelled and deposited his partly digested breakfast and lunch all over the frog, the workbench, and Linda's hands. A chorus of eeeuus erupted from the class. One student yelled, Maybe a medical career is not your calling, John.

Linda was looking down at her smelly hands when Mrs Green came to the rescue with some wet towels, handing a few to her and some to John as well. As they cleaned up, Linda turned her emerald greens at John. With a grin she asked Are you seriously considering becoming a doctor?

    I'm not sure.

In between cleaning up the mess, Linda was looking John over carefully. He was a little taller than her, about five-foot-nine she guessed to her five-foot-six with light brown hair piled up high on his head in the pompadour style of the day. His hair was a little darker than hers and his light blue-gray eyes were bordered by eyelashes – naturally long enough to make a girl envious.

It was a warm September day. Warmer than usual for Long Island, but a bit cool for Linda. Her nipples were still in tune with the tropical climate of Puerto Rico, and standing at attention in this cooler climate. She was hoping nobody noticed, but she saw John glancing at their prominence below her sweater. John was wearing a light-yellow short-sleeved shirt with the sleeves turned up in the 1960's style with light tan shorts. She noted his muscular body through the tight shirt he had on. Most of the guys in school turned up their shirt sleeves and tucked their packs of cigarettes into the folded up sleeve. John didn't smoke so his sleeves only contained his muscles. He was well aware that it was a cool way to show off your muscles. Linda noticed. "He's got a nice build," She thought.

When he vomited on the poor frog, she could see his muscles flex while his light-olive complexion turned to a pale green. He took to the boy's room and on return the greenish sick look was gone and she noted he was definitely a very handsome, well-built guy. You clean up pretty good. She said.

Maybe being a surgeon is not my calling, after all, he said with an
