Janine stumbled across an old journal and numerous photo, belonging to her grandmother. She finds it fascinating and uploads it to her computer and eventually learns things about her past she never realized.
Serena, Janine’s partner accidently finds the journal while using her partner's laptop and quizzes Janine about the contents. The pictures, Janine identifies quickly for her partner, but as for the journal she has yet to read it. Much to her puzzled partners consternation.
Afraid of what she will find, Janine has put off reading the journal, and it takes Serena's coaxing to convince her it’s her duty to learn as much about her grandmother Sarah as she can, mainly because she raised her in her mother's absence.
Serena has always been comfortable with her lifestyle. Janine, though identifying as gay, still has nagging fears and doubts about her lifestyle choices. These stem from her mother's hatred of her sister’s, Janine’s Aunt Teresa, lesbianism from the early thirties. Her mother's harsh attitude has scarred Janine and consequently has always refused to confront her demons, regarding her long dead mother's opinions.

Candice Christian

Candice was born in Paris KY on 9 January 1988. Her parents, George Bertrand Christian, an attorney who once aspired to be an actor, and Frances Hollowell insisted that Candice and her sister Simone, be sent to a Catholic school. Candice was deeply religious as a child, at one point thought of becoming a nun.

Prologue

It was a blustery snowy winter day in Burlington, KY, and Serena Waterford was browsing on the computer she shared with her partner, Janine Blaine. Serena was never sure what she did or what key she pushed, or how it happened, but a bunch of very old black and white pictures suddenly appeared on the screen.

She didn't recognize any of them, so she called out to Janine who was puttering around in the kitchen.

Janine, please come here for a minute, will you.

In a sec, Janine answered.

She arrived more like two minutes later.

Do you know anything about these pictures?

Yeah, Janine smiled. Last week I was cleaning out a couple of old shoe boxes that were falling apart. They were loaded with faded old family photos, and a journal my grandmother Sarah kept when she was a girl, so I scanned some of them and downloaded them on the computer. Then I was able to enhance them by improving the contrast and definition.

Serena looked at her partner with admiration and awe.

Hell, she said, I'll never learn how to use these contraptions. I'm just an aging dinosaur.

Janine laughed. No you're not. You're just a dirty old woman with better things on her mind.

She leaned over and kissed
