About this ebook

A Gripping Christian Fiction Prequel by an award winning USA Today bestselling author.

Asia Powers, founder of Missing But Treasured Inc., had gotten tired of making no progress in her aid to help bring home missing girls. So, she made a daring move, one that could put her and her family in peril.

Jason Freeman—a man of many mysteries and not a few secrets—found himself cradling a marriage that seemed perfect, and was anything but that. How long will the appearances hold up, when his house starts burning and he's locked in the crosshairs of an unknown enemy?

NOTE:
The Journey is 64 pages long in print, nearly 13,000 words and an exciting introduction to She Knows Her GOD that was written after the first book was done. It is a complete prequel on its own which I'm privileged to share with you.

    THE JOURNEY

M illions. It’s not there. At all. Jason Freeman had just arrived at the entrance to the charity event—the annual open-air December luncheon for the Children’s Hospital at Diamond’s Park—which he was well known for when this call came through.

He directed his gaze to the podium where the MC had just finished making an introduction and a guest speaker was speaking. The applause had died down considerably, but even that couldn’t hide the blood pounding in his ears. His millions were gone? How?

He needed to escape this celebratory environment. This was not the place to absorb such news. His grip on the cell phone tightened, the slim edge pinching into his fingers. What do you mean by the millions are missing? I don’t understand a single word you’re saying.

Eric Garland, his accountant, scoffed. I mean all of the inheritance your parents left to you is gone from your bank account designated for it. Your account balance is zero as of the last time I checked. Some shuffling sounded in the background. Look, I have an app that sends alerts to me for all the accounts I monitor. If something goes wrong, it pings me. That’s how I knew.

Did you call the bank? There has to be a mistake. You can’t just lose millions. His breathing went shallow, and sweat slickened his palms. He wiped one, then switched the phone to his dry hand. He’d rather be involved in the event he came here for. This—this news—was a distraction he didn’t want.

Yes, I did. They checked multiple times, and the account balance is zero. I requested they escalate this and trace where the funds went. They said it was a wire transfer and the account information is restricted. They can’t see anything from their end. This is bad, Jason. Very bad. I hope you haven’t gotten into anything scammy online that could compromise your banking details?

The alarm in Eric’s voice reached Jason’s heart and stuck like a knife in there, but Jason was sure. I’m not doing anything unusual online. This is not happening. I’m not sure what could be going on.

Jason loosened his tie and managed to fake a smile when the camera swung toward him as the MC announced his arrival. Did you call the cops? I mean, maybe someone should start looking.

I wouldn’t involve the cops just yet. Your parents and the cops weren’t exactly friendly, so involving them in your finances might open some old wounds, especially by virtue of who you are today. Plus, if they tip off the media, the rumors will create a free-for-all. Let’s keep this quiet and let me dig some more.

His gold watch glistened against the sunlight when he checked the time. I don’t have time for this. If this is a game, you better cut it out.

Have I ever called to play games with you about your money? Not even when we were in college did I prank you. Eric’s voice was getting even more frantic, and the man was right. They were college roommates, and he didn’t prank him once. Jason, on the other hand, did so countless times. You’ve got to call somebody who can help. Investigating stuff like this is not my turf. But do it quietly. Don’t make it public. I can refer you to a professional I know. Because if this is foul play, they might be willing to kill for it. Eric paused. Including killing you.

Jason swallowed hard. The man’s words were not helping the tightness in his throat as he loosened his tie even further. He looked toward where his wife sat chatting with her girlfriends. Maybe she could stand in for him and speak on their behalf. He couldn’t manage this while trying to speak and smile at the public. Alright. I’ll be in touch soon.

He ended the call and walked to his wife. He kissed her lips before remembering she’d recently asked him not to kiss her in public because it ruined her expensive lipstick. Too late. Sweetheart, can you please speak at this event for us? I need to take care of something urgent.

Her long lashes swept at him, clearly expressing her displeasure. Sometimes he wondered if her marriage to him lingered because he was more like an accessory to be displayed to her friends or if she was in it because she was actually committed to their marriage.

Either way, she stayed. Her family was rich enough that he didn’t bother to
