ZOMBIE LOVE STORY
PEOPLE ENVIED THOMAS and June. After 52 years of marriage, they remained inseparable. Thomas would hold June’s hand and open the door for her every time they walked together. When June caught a chill, Thomas would give her his coat to wear. June would make Thomas his favorite roasted chicken dinner and then blueberry pie for dessert every Sunday. Both were his favorites. He would find the love notes June left in Thomas’ sock drawer every morning. Theirs is a bold and active love growing every day and unequaled by other couples.
They both adored their cozy old farmhouse, sitting on 30 acres of prime Virginian farmland. It had been their retirement gift to each other after Thomas’ career at the US Postal Service. There’s nowhere on Earth they preferred to live since they abandoned the busy city life.
You can find an extensive garden serving all their fresh vegetable needs, an orchard with peaches, apples, pears, and cherries, a small flock of sheep, two goats, and three cows all on their small working farm.
Their nearest neighbors, Fred and Susan, lived over a half-mile away by car. Both Fred and Susan marveled at the stamina Thomas displayed with his non-stop labor, keeping his farm running with no outside help. Fred had celebrated half the birthdays of Thomas, yet struggled to keep up with their own five acre gentleman farm.
The sounds of nature and the occasional bleat of farm animals were all the noise you heard while at their farm. No defilement from auto or airplane traffic reached your ears there. Only peace and quiet. One could sit by the fishing pond during the day and soak in the verdant beauty surrounding you.
Without the light pollution from the city, the stars put on a breathtaking light show each evening. You forget all the problems of the outside world spending time in this piece of paradise. It felt like another world, even though their former home in Washington DC sat only a few hours away, depending on traffic.
One peaceful day while working on the farm, they received an unexpected and unwelcome visitor. His complexation was a deathly gray rather than the pleasant tan the local farmers in this county displayed. Instead of a sure and purposeful walk, he staggered with a strange gait, like a drunken sailor trying to walk on a ship’s deck in rough waters. Thomas addressed the stranger, but he wouldn’t return the greeting. Instead, moans and groans were his only response to Thomas’ query.
After ignoring his challenge, the strange gray man lunged at one of Thomas’ goats, mouth first.
