Welcome and Introduction
Welcome to a comprehensive preview of 2018. We are using astrology as a tool to understand the psychic weather of the days, weeks, and months of 2018. Another way we use astrology is to better understand the archetypes of the year. Each planet is associated with a strong psychological (or spiritual) persona, archetype, or psychic structure. As they interact with the natal horoscopes of individuals, nations, companies, or events, they bring the force of that psychic structure into the lives or situations of the entities.
For example, the Sun is an archetype of leadership, good health, energy, vitality, creative force, masculinity, charisma, and royalty. Each year the Sun traces across all the 360 degrees of the zodiac. When the Sun lands on a degree that is active in a particular chart (a person’s Midheaven, for example) it adds energy to that part of a person’s (or entity’s) life. In the case of a person’s Midheaven, the Sun brings some public recognition or notoriety. To continue with the Sun as an example, since it travels over specific degrees on the same day each year, a person’s birthday is rightfully celebrated to acknowledge their unique talents and presence on the planet.
Each of the ten planets—the Sun and Moon are considered planets
for astrology’s purposes—the Big Four asteroids (Ceres, Juno, Pallas and Vesta), Black Moon Lilith, and Chiron, have specific archetypes. As those planets aspect your horoscope the underlying archetype manifests in your life. As those planets interact with each other in the heavens they bring the archetypes to public consciousness. The people involved in public events will have personal connections to heavens.
Another example of how these planets work is in the seasonal charts for the solstices and equinoxes. The Capricorn Solstice for the winter of 2017 to 2018, that is from when the Sun enters Capricorn in December 2017 until it enters Aries at the Aries Equinox in March 2018. (For the Northern Hemisphere you probably know these as the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox.) At the moment the Sun enters Capricorn on 21 December 2017 we cast a chart for the winter, using the date and time of the solstice and locating it in Washington, DC, the U.S. Capital. Most notable in this chart is a Sun-Saturn conjunction in the 10th House of Public Affairs. It is within 1/6 of a degree of exactness, a very powerful aspect. We know that the Sun has to do with kings and rulers. Saturn has to do with old age, parsimony, restrictions, laws, coldness, and scarcity. From knowing this strong aspect and that it applies for the season, we can say that powerful male leaders will come up against the law, many leaving high office. We can say that the climate will be colder and harsher around the world for the three-month season, even in the Southern Hemisphere. We can say that those who are already poor and disadvantaged will be more desperate and in need of assistance during that time, as Saturn is the opposite of generosity.
We will discuss more about the planets and their meanings as we look forward into the year. As each planet becomes prominent its meaning will be mentioned.
You will gain most from this book if you already know the meanings of the planets. Many books have been written about those meanings and about basic astrology, so you have access to that material as well as many online resources. Here are just a word or two about each. The Sun adds vitality. The Moon nurtures. Mercury communicates. Venus adds beauty. Mars energizes. Jupiter expands (here is your planet of generosity!). Saturn constricts. Uranus upsets the status quo. Neptune connects to altered states of consciousness. Pluto dominates. Ceres assists productivity. Juno brings marriage as well as peace, or war. Pallas strategizes. Vesta dedicates to a cause. Black Moon Lilith releases repression. Chiron heals or wounds.
You will also benefit by having your horoscope available to you so that you can determine whether specific degree areas will be activated in your chart. A horoscope or natal chart is set for the exact time, date, and place of your birth. If you do not know your time of birth, set a chart for noon, or consult an astrologer for assistance. There are multiple sites on the internet where you can get your chart cast for free or for a low cost.
Here is to your success in 2018!
Circumstances Out of Your Control: Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and Eris
The planets beyond Saturn, those not visible to the human eye (without assistance), are called transcendental planets. They operate in ways beyond the experience of most people, bringing in energy and attunements that are past the understanding of most of us. For our purposes, we will say that they are beyond our control.
Instead these planets represent new input from the numinous realm, the gods, the angels, the Great Spirit, however you wish to envision the Divine. To the extent that we can connect with them and allow their influence to work within us, they are less hazardous. If we are completely blind to them, we are leaves blowing in their winds of fate. Think of each of these energies as forces beyond your control. Your choice is how to honor and accommodate them. You do not have the wherewithal to pretend that they do not exist, or that they will not impact your life.
One analogy is to see these energies as weather patterns. If one of them is influencing you, think of it as a hurricane (Uranus), a flood (Neptune), an earthquake (Pluto), or a wildfire (Eris). If one of these is happening near you, your only choice is to accommodate it in your plans for the day, week or month. None of your actions will stop these mighty forces. To follow this analogy, if you know a certain event is coming you can do these types of actions: buy more insurance that covers greater damage, or floods, or other events not covered by standard homeowner’s insurance. For earthquakes, in particular, you can stabilize the contents of your home, so that furniture does not fall on you or objects fall from unstable positions on the walls. You can learn how to shut off the water, electricity and gas to your house. You can also do these things for your office or place of business, or prompt the person in charge
to do this.
These transcendental planets also are sometimes connected with acts of war, which most insurance policies do not cover. In war they are associated with sudden events (Uranus), chemical and biological warfare (Neptune), terrorism and nuclear events (Pluto), and inciting events, usually accompanied by misleading the observers as to the cause of the events (Eris). If you want to be prepared for these worst manifestations of the transcendental planets, how would you go about it? Keep current on the news. Be aware of your environment. If hostilities seem imminent, it’s time for a vacation elsewhere… Read about the beginnings of World War II and how some individuals foresaw the war and avoided it, whereas others were victims of the war.
It’s important to acknowledge the bad possibilities of the transcendental planets, yet they also bring great gifts. One gift of Uranus is major scientific discoveries and technological advances. For Neptune we see positive mass shifts in consciousness through new films, internet memes, positive religious influences, and fashion. For Pluto we have needed renovations of structures and systems. For Eris we can clear the air and see all the parties getting praised for their good works, instead of the figureheads.
Well, enough generalities! Let’s delve into each of the four transcendental planets and what they will bring our way this year.
Uranus the Awakener versus Uranus the Chaos Creator
In 2018 Uranus begins at 24 degrees Aries and 34 minutes, it is retrograde and turns direct in motion on January 2nd at the same degree. Now moving forward, Uranus moves through the last degrees of Aries and enters Taurus for the first time since May 15th 1942 when Uranus left Taurus and entered Gemini in its last cycle. Uranus is in Taurus from May 15th until November 6th when it re-enters Aries. Uranus’s task is to
