About this ebook

You need not label you. Even if you did, that is fine.
You may come in any hue or color—Christian, Muslim, atheist, liberal, conservative, Marxist, black, white, man, woman, homosexual, American, African, CEO, homeless, geek, dunce or any identity. The bottom line is you are a human being. You cannot escape that truth. You cannot bury the inviolable equality that truth brings. Once you are a human being you are an intelligent being. Once you are an intelligent being you have to face and explore the truth of life, including the existence or nonexistence of God.
The religious, the atheists, the scientists and the entire world can argue whatever they want. Their arguments do not affect the truth of your existence. You cannot slip into that mess because the world doesn’t live your life; only you live your life. If God is true, He or She cannot be limited to the belief of the religious. God must be accessible to the intelligent human being as well. So come on, let us explore God rationally.

    PREFACE

Of all the thoughts that have originated in the human mind space, God is the most brilliant because of its unique perspective of oneness and love. No other thought that originated in the human mind unites life the way God does. God is the only idea that is inclusive of all forms of life and the entire universe. Every great man or woman who has known the truth of God proclaimed the wholeness of life, so it is ironical that God is also the idea that divides humanity. Probably more blood has been shed on earth in the name of God than in the name of any other being or idea.

The modern world is no different. While millions of people practice their religion peacefully, religious terrorism is showing its ugly face once again. This has always been the case. Religious terrorism is not new. People have killed each other in the name of God for many centuries. Each civilization has tried to deal with religious terrorism in accordance with its own standards and customs. In the modern world, we are trying to deal with religious terrorism by modern standards and customs. We use intelligence agencies, law enforcement and the military to deal with religious terrorism and hope to find a lasting solution. However, history has taught us that religious problems have no permanent solution.

Religion deals with God, an idea that lets man believe in eternal life. No human being wants to die. We all want eternal life. The idea of heaven is neither illogical nor out of the ordinary. Who doesn’t want eternal life? Who doesn’t want to live forever in a beautiful happy place forever? We all want to live such a life. Moreover the human experience of life is such that it doesn’t allow us to ignore the truth of love. Love is a strange feeling. We cannot bring ourselves to rationally explain love but we experience the truth of love in our heart. Our heart knows love. Our life revolves around love. Shunned by love, we become lifeless. We know love is what makes us live. At the same time, love is not tangible. Love is not like any physical thing that can be identified and defined. Love is what resides in our heart and we feel its truth. We know the love our heart experiences is not some irrational blind faith. We know love is real.

Our experience of the truth of love convinces us that life cannot end with the death of the body. We are convinced the beautiful selfless experience of love cannot end with the body. The body may die but what about my love? How can my heart, its feeling of love and the vibrant life come to an end abruptly? These are questions every human being asks about death. These are genuine questions rooted in the very core of human life. Religion seems to answer these questions. Religion provides a platform upon which human beings can find the hope of eternal life a possibility. Religion nourishes the idea of love into God. Through the eternity of God, religion creates the hope of eternal love. Humans find their desire for eternal expression of love in the possibility of God.

It is this complexity of religion that makes it thrive. Unless genuine questions about the truth of life, the truth of heaven, the truth of afterlife, the truth of death, the truth of existence, the truth of love and the truth of the purpose of human life are rationally answered, the complexities of religious beliefs will go on troubling humanity. The science of materials and selected laws of nature cannot be the answer to these genuine questions. Most rationalists and atheists propound the scientific and technological advances made on materialistic existence as answers to these genuine questions. The science of materials does not answer the question of love. The science of materials does not answer the basic questions of life and death. The science of materials does not answer even 5 percent of the questions a human being asks about the very basis of his life.

It is the fundamental right of a human being to know what happens to us after our death. As products of nature, it is within our right to seek answers to the questions of our heart. We are free to hope for an eternal life beyond the limitations of our body, especially when we are aware that other men, like Jesus, Krishna or Buddha, have done exactly that. Our genuine aspirations cannot be shunned as religious stupidity.

Intellectuals must be willing to explore religion on the basis of religious pursuit. The customs and traditions religion uses to pursue its goal may be questioned but the pursuit itself is genuine and rooted in rationalism. The pursuit of religion to find the truth of human life beyond the physical body cannot be casually dismissed as irrational belief. On the contrary, those who reject the honest pursuit of the truth of life and blindly believe in the end of human life with death can be accused of being proponents of irrationalism. It is time intellectuals and rationalists take an honest and rational look at religion, its methods and, most importantly, its goal. A rational God can be a solution to not only religious problems but also to all human problem.

    INTRODUCTION

As humans, we have been living on planet earth for thousands of years. During all these years, we have witnessed all kinds of ups and downs: From the brutal violence perpetrated by some humans to the height of compassion showered by others, humanity has witnessed possibilities and impossibilities. Our species has gone through myriad facets of civilizations and cultures. Numerous ideas, ideologies, religions and philosophies have been presented to make our life better. Thousands of great men and women of wisdom and compassion have come and gone. Despite all these efforts, knowledge and experiences, can we humans confidently assert that we are doing better today?

As you read this book, billions of humans are suffering. Religious terrorism, poverty, ideological violence, state-sponsored anarchy and diseases are making life miserable for millions. Human suffering is not limited to physical pain but also mental and emotional pain in the deep warrens of the mind and heart. Most human suffering is inexplicable, so billions suffer silently. Many of us hardly know the subtle, persistent and deeper pains of even our own neighbors. The state of affairs of animals and plants are another story. We not only make our own lives miserable but also the lives of all that lives on this planet.

Humans all over the world, irrespective of whether they live in an advanced nation or a developing nation, continue to discriminate against each other on the basis of color, gender, race, caste, religion, education, economics, regional identity, ideology, and so on. Even in this so-called modern era, human beings brutally kill each other for simple disagreements, like not believing in a particular religious book or practicing a different custom.

The rise of Islamic terrorism has once again brought religious intolerance to the center stage. When it comes to religion, humanity today is at the crossroads. We choose the direction we want to go. We could go on treading the same path we treaded in the past or tread a new trajectory. We have the option of choosing the right path that finds a lasting solution to religious intolerance.

Government organizations like intelligence and law enforcement agencies cannot eradicate religious terrorism. Anyone who believes terrorism can be totally eradicated by such agencies is daydreaming. These agencies have their limitations. Most importantly, intelligence agencies and law enforcement can only work to prevent a thought from evolving into action. These government agencies have no control over the origin of the thought—the underlying factors that give rise to religious extremism. Once humans allow themselves to nourish the thought of religious extremism, it is only a matter of time before they find the right opportunity to convert their thought into action. We cannot afford to spend all our energy and time preventing actions. It is time humanity finds time to address the origin of the thought of religious fundamentalism.

    Intellectual alienation of religion

Intellectuals all over the modern world have practiced blatant discrimination of religion. Religion has never been part of any honest intellectual discourse in the public domain. Politics, technology, gadgets, science, medicine, food, and many other topics have been given far more intellectual importance than religion. This is a travesty. Religion, an idea that can potentially destroy the very fabric of human society, is too important to be left to the mercy of religious believers yet the majority of intellectuals in the modern world have never bothered to honestly explore the basics of all religions. Occasionally, here and there, some intellectuals do discuss religion, but, unfortunately, even those discussions revolve only around the belief system of a particular religion. It is this same attitude that leads to religious terrorism. Focusing on only one religion or propagating the teachings of one religion is the root cause of religious extremism. Intellectuals must keep away from going down the same path religious leaders have often gone down. Religion must be intellectually explored, and go beyond the limitations of a particular religion. An honest intellectual exploration of the basis of all religious teachings must be pursued to find the common purpose of religion. So far intellectuals have not shown any honest attempt to explore the root of all religions and comprehensively evaluate the purpose of religion and the rational basis of God.

The purpose of religion or God has never been discussed in the open intellectually. Intellectuals have always shied away from exploring the truth about God. The world has been divided into rationalists and religious believers. The pursuit of the truth about God has been lost between these two ideological groups, who propagate their own interests. The modern world treats God either as a mystery or the product of various irrational religious belief systems. Humans have never been able to go beyond the rational or religious approaches traditionally handed over to us by our forefathers. We need to take an honest intellectual look at religion and, more importantly, God.

Why a rational God is the only solution for all human problems

Intellectuals must face the fact that religion will never go away. No matter how science and technology advances, religion is here to stay. As long as human beings die and the truth of afterlife remains a mystery beyond human awareness, belief systems will thrive. As long as religion thrives on belief systems, terrorism and all other forms of religious extremism and bigotry will survive. The only way religion becomes sane and reasonable is by making the belief system irrelevant. Let us not forget the fact that religious people succumb to belief systems not because they want to but because they have no rational explanation for God. If there is a rational explanation for God and religious pursuit, then humans need not blindly believe in a God that lives on another planet only to selectively punish humans and control every aspect of human life. To achieve sanity in religion, God must be rationally explained. Intellectual discussion on the truth of God beyond religious belief systems must be initiated and propagated; it cannot be left to blind beliefs. There is an urgent need to liberate God from religion. Intellectuals can liberate God from religion. As long as humans fail to rationally explore God, humanity will continue to suffer from religious backwardness and extremism.

A rational God would not only help solve religious confrontations but also create the right atmosphere to help solve all the other problems that humans face. If humans correctly comprehend the scriptures of all religions and the teachings of all spiritual masters the world has produced, they would know that all religions teach the existence of one God or one ultimate truth. If rationalists and scientists understand the whole of existence as one energy, they would appreciate the oneness of existence. If all human beings dropped their identities and perspectives to experience life as life, they would realize that we all experience life the same way—happiness, pain, love, compassion, desire, need, aspiration, positivity, negativity, and all feelings and emotions are experienced similarly by all human beings. The truth of life does not discriminate against any human being. Wholeness of life is unquestionable and inviolable. Experiencing the truth of life as wholeness is every human being’s inalienable right.

Of all ideas that originated in the human mind, God is unique, because God is an idea that is rooted in the wholeness of existence. God is an idea that incorporates not only the diversity of humanity but also the diversity of all life forms as one whole existence. God is perhaps the only brilliant idea that humans invented to celebrate the inclusiveness of the whole universe. If such an idea is rationally explained to the majority, humanity can truly find liberation from all its problems.

Wholeness of existence must be intellectually explained

Despite all facts and beliefs pointing to the wholeness of existence, humans continue to live miserably divisive and destructive. Every idea, every belief, every religious teaching, every ideology, and every intellectual conceptualization has been misused and misconstrued to keep the world a divided house. No matter what technological or scientific advancements humans make, as long as they remain outside the experience of wholeness of existence, humanity will continue to suffer. Humans seek God with a divided heart. How will they find liberation! No truth is going to come out of divisiveness for the truth is one and whole. As long as humans keep away from the truth of wholeness, they will suffer.

The way we use our intelligence has helped us grow vertically but rarely drives us to dig even a micrometer into our heart. We become entangled in the gross, and royally ignore the fine. Every great idea or teaching has been misinterpreted to isolate humans into compartments.

As the species that tops the list of the most intelligent creatures, humans are duty bound to introspect about why they consistently fail to help create a better life, at least for the members of their own species. At some point in our lifetime, each of us must ponder the status of life on this planet, and ask why we as a species are unable to make the world a place for all lives to live peacefully. If we refuse to do that, we are not worthy to be called humans.

The root of all our problems arises from our unwillingness or incapability to perceive the wholeness of life as one existence. All religions talk about the wholeness of existence. Humans are very much aware of the wholeness of life. Every Son of God, prophet, messiah, avatar, angel, yogi, guru, or spiritual master has described the ultimate truth, or God as one truth. There is only one existence. There is only one God. There is only one ultimate truth. That truth is truth to Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Jews, Jains, Sikhs, Buddhists, Communists, Rationalists, Atheists, Capitalists, Socialists, men, women, Americans, Chinese, Indians and all other human beings regardless of color, race, shape or identity. Then why has humanity as a whole never experienced the truth as one? The answer is simple: Humans do not honestly attempt to experience existence as one. Humans have never tried rationally to convince themselves of the wholeness of existence.

Humans only subscribe to belief systems that espouse the wholeness of existence or God but never work to experience the oneness of truth. They believe Jesus Christ or Krishna will hand them liberation on a platter. That will never happen. If liberation were something Jesus could deliver as a ticket or charity, then the entire human race would have found its liberation long ago. Sure, Jesus, Krishna, Buddha, Prophet Mohammed and all other great spiritual masters love us, but they cannot dole liberation out to us as an act of charity. If they could liberate us like that, they would have delivered us already. Liberation is what we seek individually and pursue honestly. No power on the universe can offer humans liberation, simply because no power on the universe is keeping humans from their liberation. We must earn our liberation.

True liberation is not about belief. In liberation, humans must experience the truth of who they are. The very idea of liberation is not rooted in religion but in the true nature of a human being. Each of us exists as existence. Liberation is the unwavering urge from the depth of our soul to experience its true nature as existence. Liberation is not a belief but self-experience of ultimate truth. The self-experience of ultimate truth can only happen as wholeness.

The steps humans take to bring the experience of wholeness of life into reality are only baby steps. Intellectual, educational, economic and religious attempts are the best humans have ever made to bring wholeness into humanity. All these attempts proved unsuccessful because these attempts at best only make humans believe in the wholeness, but not experience it. If such approaches are to be effectual in bringing wholeness into humanity, then they must focus on human experience and perception, not on belief.

As humans we must exigently address the issue of experiencing life as wholeness. If there is one ultimate truth or God, then the first step is to explain it in a rational way that encompasses all that exists. We must explain to ourselves how we all, despite our differences and diverse backgrounds, are related within the wholeness. We must face the reality of wholeness boldly: The ultimate truth, or God, is one, and that truth encompasses all religious ideas however diverse they may appear; rationalism, however anti-religious it may appear; and science, however intelligential it may appear.

To rationalize God humans must be audacious

The question is do we have the guts to face the truth of oneness! It is natural and easy to believe in one God but not to work for that experience. When the truth of oneness confronts us face to face, can we take it? Are we capable of handling the truth of wholeness?

The truth is humanity lacks the guts to face the truth as truth. They hide behind either the stupidity of religion or the contrived intelligence of rationalism. More than callousness, it is cowardice that keeps humanity entangled in brutal darkness. If humans continue to go through extreme suffering on this planet, only human cowardice is to blame. To break from their ignorance, humans must face the truth of the truth as truth. That requires courage and boldness. Because once they accept the truth, they cannot go on living the conditioned life they are so happily accustomed to. Once they accept all humans and all life on planet earth belong to one truth, then they cannot divide people on the basis of their assumed ideas of religious belief and rationalism. The experience of wholeness requires a sense of belonging. Humans are too cowardly to bring the sense of belonging of wholeness into their heart. Their idea of belonging rests within the corridors of their own families, religious beliefs, cultures, nations, groups and contrived identities. It takes guts to expand belonging to the whole of existence.

Knowledge is always gained by an individual

There is no mass liberation or enlightenment. Krishna was an individual, as was Buddha and Jesus Christ. There may be many Buddhas, Krishnas and Jesuses but still each one is an individual. Humans receive knowledge only at an individual level, not as a mass. A society can change only if each individual that makes up the society changes. The responsibility to access knowledge is always the individual’s, not the society’s. In fact, all scriptures are written for an individual, not for the masses. Religion converted the scriptures for the masses so that they could organize mass religion. Even if the teachings of Krishna, Buddha or Jesus appear as meant for the masses, they are in fact meant for the individual. One of the greatest blunders religion committed is converting the teachings of the scriptures for the masses and organizing mass religion out of it. If religious teachings were left to individuals without mass organization, the world would be a better place today. To stress the point of individual knowledge, this book is written as a first person-to-second person account. The author would like to talk to you, the reader, directly.

For those of you who are looking for spiritual growth and awareness, I would like to inform you that this book is not a to-do list. Nor is this book a protocol for you to follow word by word. We are all thinking humans. Scientists and intellectuals are not the only ones who think. All humans think and question the ultimate truth of our life or the existence of God beyond religious beliefs. Even the religious people who believe in God have genuine questions about the nature of God and their own belief but more often than not, they bury their genuine questions beneath the beliefs in their religious texts. This book is an honest exploration of the truth of God or the ultimate truth of existence, beyond the established stereotypes of rationalism and religious beliefs. Both rationalism and religiosity have hijacked and consumed the human mind space for a long time. It is time humanity takes a genuine approach towards the ultimate truth, intellectually. It is time humanity fathoms the teachings of all our great spiritual masters, at least intellectually.

This book does not guarantee to take you to God or the ultimate truth. That is an individual responsibility and it will always remain an individual responsibility. However, when you finish reading this entire book, you will come out as a human being who has an intellectual comprehension of the ultimate truth of existence or God, beyond the established religious perspective. In this book you will find honest answers to your honest questions about the truth of life and God. Questions about one God or multiple Gods, multiple religious confrontations and contradictions, the relevance of human intelligence or rationalism, the future of humanity, the nature of sins and heaven, the truth of who you are and many more basic questions any honest thinking human mind has on religion, God or ultimate truth are all addressed in a holistic manner. The purpose is not to preach but intellectually comprehend.

Finally, there cannot be any negativity in the pursuit of the ultimate truth. Wholeness is only possible when humanity approaches life as life. In the truth of life, there is no negativity. Every seed you plant on the soil finds its way towards the sky if the soil is fertile. Nature is all about life, not negativity. Every word and every sentence in this book is written with only one intention: The truth of life is all about wholeness.
