Not Gonna Write Poems - Michael A. Lee
Ticks and Rice
I’ll tell you my story if you’ve got a minute or two.
It starts off just right, as most stories do.
I met my future bride as we waited on line.
We knew it was love when we drank the same wine.
We grew closer day by day, did almost everything as one.
She finished my sentences with a skill second to none.
We laughed and had fun each and every day,
So I thought to myself, let’s get married in May.
After three years of heavenly bliss,
We made it official, sealed our bond with a kiss.
We said our I dos
on the first day in May.
It was quite a show, all happy and gay.
We then bought our dream home at last.
We bought some new things, kept some things from the past.
We unpacked our belongings from morning to night.
It was hard work, but it was all right.
So at the end of our first day in our love shack,
My wife said, "Take a load off your feet, just go relax.
I’ve got your dinner and dessert covered with ease."
And she went to work with her apron put on
As I was left to do as I please.
After forty-five minutes,
My lovely bride called out to me.
She said, "Close your eyes, just take my hand.
I’ve got a surprise for you that’s really grand."
So I licked my lips and followed her lead,
My stomach growling, waiting to be pleased,
My mouth salivating and ready to chew,
My nose trying to sniff for a clue.
She finally took her hands away from my eyes,
And I have to say what I saw
Made my blood cold as ice.
‘Cause I was expecting a feast as a prize,
But instead what I got
Was a heaping, hot bowl filled with ticks and rice.
PICTURE2.jpgOde to My Snore
There’s a sound so loud
Coming out from my mouth, for which I’m not proud.
It only happens when I’m deep in slumber.
Why this foul noise emanates from me, I can only wonder.
Blowing like a trumpet,
It would disturb your tea with crumpets.
It returns every night
And puts my wife’s rest in plight.
Tossing and turning,
She lets me know when her ire’s a-burning.
With a nudge or two in my side instead of a kiss,
She reminds me again how I disturb her tranquility and bliss.
So I roll in bed to try to quell the sound,
But to my regret, my snore can still be found,
Shaking the windows and making things creak.
My snore’s still sixty decibels too loud
To allow a proper night of sleep.
PICTURE3.jpgChicken Lo Mein
Chicken lo mein,
Chicken lo mein,
I wrote this poem all about you,
To tell the whole world that you’re second to none.
For you, I’d give up my hot dogs, my pizza, my hamburgers with the buns.
Chicken lo mein,
Chicken lo mein.
I can eat it in the morning.
I can eat it in the afternoon too.
There’s no better dish; it’s truly delish,
And that’s the honest truth.
Chicken lo mein,
Chicken lo mein.
It’s truly a gift from above,
Made with soy sauce and love.
My grandma sometimes cooks it for me,
And in case you want to know,
Her name is Tai May Lee.
Chicken lo mein,
Chicken lo mein.
On one Thanksgiving eve,
Grandma tried something new
‘Cause I think she forgot;
Perhaps the kitchen was too hot.
And she served it with stuffing and gravy to me.
PICTURE4.jpgChristmas Day
Christmas day is so sweet,
Christmas day can’t be beat.
Christmas day is filled with toys and treats.
Christmas day is when the world seems to be at peace.
So I think we’d all agree that Christmas day just really rocks,
Until you’ve opened all your gifts and got
Ten new pairs of Christmas socks!
