Chapter One
The Encounter
There I was in the tree, waiting for what ever it was in the bushes to show its-self at last, I had an arrow on the string of my bow but I had not yet aimed at my chosen target. I inched along the nearest branch and peered through the leaves surrounding me, the bushes rustled once more and a bent figure came slowly out towards the clearing. I quickly tightened my grip on the bow still in my hand, with an arrow fitted to the string. I tried not to breathe, as I realised what the figure below was.
The figure stopped dead in its tracks and turned very slowly towards the tree that I was sat in, its yellow eyes stared towards the part of the tree that I had been moments before. Had it seen me? Had it heard me? It suddenly sniffed in my direction. Could it smell me? If it had it would have come by now, or would it? It started to move, at first it seemed lost and then stopped again. It turned moving round until it was facing me, and the tree that I was in. It came closer and closer until it was almost at the foot of the tree. I was starting to think, should I shoot? Should I run? A million thoughts were swimming around in my head.
I felt as if I had no choice, I closed my eyes, I pulled back the string and released the arrow … Seconds later there was a shriek like a battle cry I opened my eyes to see that the orc below had not seen me before but now he had and he was roaring, roaring like a bull ready to charge at the matador, I leapt down from the tree. He turned around to face me at last. I fitted an arrow to the string of my bow as he ran and grabbed a spear lying on the leafy floor by the bushes. He lunged at me I dodged the spear, but only just, and shot another arrow at him, I took my sword from my belt and chopped the spear in his hand in to four small pieces, and then, quick as lightening, I plunged my sword into his strong chest.
I was running, running like the wind, the wind blew against my face as I ran at last I reached the others at the camp. Orcs
I said to the captain of the group. Where?
he asked, grabbing his bow. In the woods
I said. I watched as five archers ran off towards the woods. There could be more
I said to him after the rest of the men took their weapons from beside the fire. You’re right
he said. You come with us to the river
.
Alright then.
I said. We hurried off over the hill and started to follow the stream that lead to the river. When we reached the east bank of the river it looked as if nothing had been there for a long time; it was still and silent, no birds and no orcs.
As we walked along the side of the steep bank I noticed something drop on the ground on the other side of the river. It was an arrow, but I couldn’t see if it was an orc arrow or an elven
