Cadain Grey Dragon - Jo Jo Blackburn

    Chapter 1

Asudden trembling of the bush made me drop to the ground. Quietly waiting to see if it was my old friend trying to surprise me.  The sound of splashing water near by and the familiar sound of gurgling took me back to the early days in this strange and unusual Realm.

As the memories floated in and out of my mind, my eyes never left the bush.  The events that had brought me to this time and place made its home in my head.  Over and over they played.  Each time I analyzed hoping to see where things had went astray.

Before I realized it, dusk had turned into darkness, but I remained still, hunching down even closer to the sandy ground.  Time was no longer important to me as I waited, and wishing for any sign that it was my old friend.  I missed her dearly.

Finally the growling of my stomach made me give up.  I did wonder how long I had been hunched down because when I lifted myself into a sitting position, a sharp tingling sensation slowly crawled up my spine.  Not moving a muscle, I watched as the orange glow of the fire grew.  The energy flowed down my spine calming the sensation.  I sat crossed legged staring into the depths of the fire watching a small dragon sprite dance about the forest.

Memories of the past years drew me deeper into the dreamlike trance.  As the orange glow from the fire surrounded me, my vision wandered back to the leaves that had been trembling earlier.  A flash of blinding yellow light shot through the branches, bringing me back to the moment at hand.  Once again I found myself sitting crossed-legged on the sandy soil.

The glow of the fire had settled down to a mere spark, so I gently poked at it with my staff while throwing a handful of acorns into the fire.  I watched as the embers danced around until the fire had taken on new life.

Leaning back against the fallen tree, I could see the silver shield of the moon trembling in the dark purple sky.  The twinkles sounding it seemed to be speaking only to me.

The memories of events that had placed me in this realm slipped into my dreams as sleep had overcome me.

Many moons ago, I came to live here in this place. One simple event changed everything I ever knew about my life.  So before moving forward, I must go backwards to the beginning, to the event that started this journey of a lifetime.  By the way, my name is Callie and this story is from my point of view.  Sit back as I tell you my story.

    Chapter 2

As the preacher’s voice softened, I shifted the hot sand with my sandal.  Gulping, I looked at the sun rising above the tree line and back at the coffin.  Tears filled my eyes, as I glanced around to see if anyone was watching.  Could I make it to the trees without being noticed?

I knew I had to take a chance.  So as everyone lowered their heads for the final prayer, I darted to the old oak in the middle of the field.  I quickly hid behind it to catch my breath.  Tightening the grip I had on my bag, I
