Chapter One
The clearly loved Grandparents of Michael and James were an odd sort of couple who lived in the country in their formidable manor home just outside London located in Nutter’s Grove which interestingly enough described the nature of these extraordinary, eccentric Grandparents who were only called by the unusual name of the Fruit Cakes Family.
Grandpa had his own workshop outside that was rather run down and neglected but had a mystery of experiments going on inside and odd pipes oozing out of every crevice of the building. Grandma however, liked her role in making homemade jams and usual cakes that really didn’t look like cakes at all. Michael and Jonny were very normal children, they had not had much exposure to their Grandparents while they were growing up as their mother didn’t approve of their outlandish behaviour and deemed them not to be suitable for doing their grandparental duties of having the children from time to time as she felt they were irresponsible. The contact Michael and Jonny were allowed was a weekly phone call on a Sunday afternoon just after dinner.
Michael and James loved their Grandparents’ entertaining way of making everything sound like an adventure as they were so quirky in their way and they laughed when Grandpa told them stories of exploding gas bottles that exploded in the night unexpectedly, causing Grandma to jump out of her skin. Wise Grandma’s adventures in the kitchen often sounded outrageous as she described her recipes in great length which often made the kids feel ill. Green jams and yellow steak in purple sauce was more than their stomachs could take but it amazed them with a sense of great intrigue at what was going on over there. After an hour of laughing and sharing stories, mother told the boys to get off the phone now.
Oh but Mom…
they protested.
Now, you know Grandma and Grandpa are not right in the head, boys, don’t you? I don’t want you to get silly ideas into your heads about the foolish things they do over there. Do you hear, boys? Bath and bed. Now get on with it.
Said Mom.
Michael and James did as they were told and under their breath saying It’s not fair I want to see them
I do, too
said James.
Mom was always right and completely boring but always knew best. Boys do like an adventure and mom was a stickler for the rules. The boys would chatter a lot when they were told to go to sleep and it was quite clear they were growing up fast. She liked it when they were at home and seemed to chill and to say the least. The boys so desperately needed some excitement and
