Chapter 1
I told you not to invite my mother
Shawn whispers to Tara.
I know I know, but I didn't think she was going to show and plus it's your wedding day I figured she would at least be happy for you
Tara replied All you have is your mother and a couple of friends that are here for you and I have my entire family and friends, I thought u needed somebody to support you
Tara explains. They are sitting across the room watching Shawn’s mother drink glass after glass of wine to the point of inebriation. After her fifth glass of wine Shawn
leaves his spot at the table and walks over to his mother to suggest she had enough to drink.
How you gonna tell me I had enough I'm your mother I didn't stop you from dating Tara did I no. You knew I didn't like her and what did you do? You get her pregnant and now you married her. Did you marry her for love, I don't believe so you married her because she trapped you. You’re a few weeks from graduating from med school and you are her and her family’s piggy bank. I thought I raised you better than that but I guess I was wrong
Shawn mother screams at the top of her lungs, as the festive mood comes to a screeching halt.
Embarrassment overshadows Shawn face. How could we have just come from such a beautiful wedding and then end up at the reception from hell he thought to himself. Mom I think you should leave because you are causing a scene and it’s not fair to my wife yes mom my wife
Shawn says to his mother as he taps his friend and ask could she take his mother home. His mother gets up from table, the alcohol can be smelled from her breath "I got here on my own I can get myself home, but before I leave
want you to know you are wasting your time with this girl when the first sign of trouble comes she's going to leave and who will be there waiting for you. Not your mother, not since you chose that girl over me" her words slur as she stumbles to the waiter so he can call her a cab.
Shawn walks back to the table where he was sitting as he looks at Tara with a look of shame.
I'm so sorry Shawn I did not know it was going to turn out this bad
Tara apologizes.
I'm not worried about that I'm trying to figure out how come she never appreciates anything I do. But enough about that, this is our day I’m not going to let her ruin it
Shawn takes a piece of cake from his plate and feed it to Tara. Remember our honeymoon is in an hour and I can make it up to you then ok
Ok
Tara repeats as she kisses his lips forever and a day baby, forget what your mother has said we been together since high school and I’ve been with you since day one. I’m here no matter what for better or worst. Remember that.
Tara’s mother waits until Shawn’s mother leave before walking up to the newlywed couple to give a word of encouragement "I Love you to Shawn don’t mind your mother we don’t want you for no money. You been dating my daughter since forever and she stuck by your side just let your love blossom since you decided to plant the seeds.
Chapter 2
Tassels turned, and then the dean tells the class they can toss their hats in the air, its Shawn graduation day. He looks out into the crowd and there’s Tara his beautiful wife she looks even more beautiful now then she did on the wedding day Shawn thinks to himself. Tara’s mother is standing beside her but Shawn mother is nowhere in sight.
To understand why Shawn and his mother never had a really good relationship is to go in to the past. It all began when she started dating one of her boyfriends in the mid 80’s. She loved him so much because he was good looking he was doing well for
himself and she had three sons’ already and it seem he loved her for her. So she would do anything for him. One day he asked her to cook the drugs that he sold. She became his cook for the drugs but she became addicted from inhaling the vapors of the drugs as she cooked them. The guy left her not much longer after becoming hooked she was prostituting to take care of her sons before she going to jail on drug possession charges. In result, she spent a year in prison while incarcerated she giving birth to Shawn. So where it states the hospital that a child is born it says the county jail for Shawn.
Since his mother was sent to jail his three older brothers were relinquished to foster care right and Shawn was to after he was born. Separation was inevitable because not to long after they arrived at the first foster home his brothers were adopted and sent to homes as Shawn was left behind because the visitors would say he cried too much. Resulting in; Shawn never knew his brothers but they were old enough to have some type of memory of him.
After his brothers' were placed in their new homes Shawn stayed in the foster home until he was
returned to the custody of his mother at the age of 1 years old a few months after she was released from prison. Ever since then Shawn’s mother blamed Shawn for everything not because he did anything, but because he was a constant remainder of her past and how it broke up her family.
This bumpy relationship even affected Shawn on his graduation he thought to himself. I thought she would have at least come see me graduate from medical school, I thought that would have made her proud. As the graduating class disperses, Tara sees the smile turn to a look of despair on Shawn’s faces, she rushes to him so she can put a smile on his face. Aww what’s the matter baby turn that frown upside
Tara says as she squeezes Shawn cheeks to make him smile.
Hey babe… I thought she would have shown up today, it’s my big day and she didn’t think to get over herself and come to see me walk
he responses while he shakes his head.
Tara grabs Shawn’s hand and rubs it on her pregnant belly, Your daughter was here that all that matters, she was kicking the hell out of me too
Tara informs Shawn as he rubs her belly and he throws the thoughts of his mother not being there away.
Tara mother walks over and congratulates him. Shawn idolized Tara’s mother, he wished his mother was more like her then she was like herself. Tara's mom was so caring and supportive and she seems to take Shawn under her wing. Thank Ms. Gina
Shawn tells her as she gives him the biggest hug.
So have you heard word from the job that you were talking about the other day
she questions with a laugh.
Shawn smiles and replies yes I received a call this morning and I start on Monday. I can’t wait either.
Tara looks at Shawn and asks him when were you going to tell me
Shawn turns to Ms. Gina trying to change the conversation. Shawn
Tara says while she steps in front of him.
I was going to tell you later tonight and maybe you and your mother could look at houses
Shawn explains to Tara I wanted to surprise you.
The
excitement was written all over Tara’s face as her and her mother talked about houses while they walked back to the car
They arrive to Ms. Gina’s house and Tara’s family is there waiting for their arrival at the house to congratulate Shawn for his achievement. Shawn hugs and shakes hands with everybody, as the ladies in the family rubs Tara stomach and admire her pregnant belly. Ms. Gina yells to Shawn we have your favorite.
Shawn knows what she is referring to…pepperoni pizza.
Shawn had a strong desire for pepperoni pizza, people always said probably because maybe it just tasted good to him. But the real reason is because when he was younger the only time he would spend time or see his mother smile was when they ate pizza. The night was festive and it was a memorable night for Shawn only thing that was missing was his mother.
Shawn walks to Tara and ask her was she ready to go home she replies yes my feet are hurting from standing and walking all day
. They say their goodbyes to everybody at the house, then they both
kiss Tara’s mother before getting into the car to head home.
Shawn is known for his jokes and today was no different. As Shawn drives to their apartment he cracks his jokes about Tara’s family as Tara laughs but also tries to justify why they do what they do, as she looks out the window.
She abruptly tells Shawn to stop the car, making Shawn pull the car over. Tara gets out of the car and as she walks towards the for sell sign she pulls her cell phone out of her purse and begins to save the number. She yells to Shawn, who is now standing by outside of the car standing by the car door DO YOU LIKE THIS HOUSE?
Shawn takes his eyes off of Tara and then looks at the house then back at Tara.
Tara do it really has to be pink though
he says with a chuckle. She nods her head back and forth with a smile while walking back to the car. That’s the house we are getting I just got to see the inside to see if it match and if it does we are getting it Shawn
Tara demands.
Chapter 3
After seeing the house the rest of the trip home Tara talks about the house. This made Shawn so glad to pull up into the apartment complex and park the car. Tara just wouldn’t stop talking about the house. So Shawn hurried and got Tara in the apartment. He goes into the room and locks the door to get away from her.
She goes in the kitchen and screams out for Shawn, realizing he went to
