Prologue: Coffee

Arriving at Ellis Island ancestors of Ed Go knew they had made the right decision.

—This is the right decision, the husband said to his wife.

—Absolutely, the wife replied to her husband.

Of course they were saying these things in Portuguese, or Italian or Danish—who the hell knows what his European ancestry is—and had no real idea what they were in for, no concept of the hardships to follow, no prescience of the lives that would flow
