The Process
Lola loved being with Richie. He was rich, well-dressed, and had a lot of powerful friends. He also had high social status, and she loved all the opportunities his connections provided. She loved bragging about him, knowing her friends were a little envious. She ate at the best restaurants, took exotic vacations, and shopped at the most expensive stores without having to deal with poor people
problems. Yeah, he probably slept with other women, but as long as she didn’t see it, then it didn’t bother her. Life wasn’t dull; she wasn’t in front of a computer or working in an office all day. She had a luxurious apartment in Midtown Manhattan with minimal responsibilities and a daily agenda focused on keeping herself happy and entertained.
Richie and Lola met when he was 22 and she was 19; he was an investment banker and nightclub promoter. Richie was making a lot of money and, like many in his situation, felt he was invincible and could do no wrong. Lola was a student at Fashion Institute of Technology, one of the most respected fashion schools. Richie became a promoter to have fun and meet new people. Lola bought a fake ID in Queens and would go out a few times a week to dance and socialize. She probably didn’t need a fake ID; all she needed was a short skirt and a pair of heels. She was very sexy (signed exclusively to Ford Models), and this allowed her to party and travel virtually anywhere for free. Sometimes, in exchange for expensive experiences, she was expected to have sex; while sex was not explicitly discussed or negotiated beforehand, she knew if the vacations to Ibiza and Miami were to continue, then the men expected it. Fortunately, Lola was a decent judge of character (and also a little lucky) and was never physically forced to have sex without her consent while traveling with one of her sponsors.
During the fall semester of her sophomore year, Lola went out with a few girlfriends to a popular nightclub on 10th avenue. Richie approached her, said he was a promoter, asked for her contact information, and then offered some free drinks. Normally, she wouldn’t have been interested in speaking with him; he wasn’t overly attractive or charismatic, but he was hosting a table with bottles of alcohol, so she acted friendly, brought her friends along, and they drank for free at his
