The Panther's Mate - Selina Coffey

    CHAPTER ONE

John Maze pushed away from his desk and rubbed his eyes, feeling the pain slowly turn to relief beneath the weight and pressure of his fingers. A yawn escaped him as his body involuntarily lurched into a long back stretch.

He had been glued to his computer for several hours, finishing up the research needed on the new real estate properties he was considering investing in. It was a typical Friday afternoon. Doing research was the best way he found to take Friday and make it as relaxing as possible. The research was necessary and had to be done, so might as well pick the end of the week to take care of it.

He could have outsourced it to someone online or he could have hired a full time in-house person to do this menial task for him, but he enjoyed doing it himself, besides he had never really trusted letting anyone else take care of this crucial aspect of his real estate business.

It wasn’t easy to do, and it was downright tiring after a few hours, but compared to the rest of the day to day business stuff where he had to be constantly on the move, attending this meeting and that meeting—it was pretty simple by comparison.

He poured himself another cup of coffee (I believe that makes an even dozen for today) and sipped the warm, soothing caffeine infusion. He had to admit he was addicted to his caffeine and without it he was basically a shell of himself. He didn’t feel too guilty about it because there were definitely a lot worse things to be addicted to. And he loved his coffee. He had never been a big alcohol fan and he didn’t smoke, but he had to have his coffee and had become hung up on it since an early age.

It was during coffee fused all-nighters in college that he had learned the secret to staying focused on getting things done and accomplished. The body would fight you and try to tell you how tired you were, but you would confuse it by imbibing copious amounts of caffeine.

He took another huge gulp, barely feeling the hot burn of the liquid on his tongue. It was so good. A few minutes ago he had been on the verge of crashing for a nap, but now he was wide awake and ready for the next big thing that was coming down the pike.

He decided he needed to leave the office for a bit. He had not had lunch yet and he had a few properties he had to visit. He sent the findings from his day of research to his secretary, Sally, and advised her to set up the appointments to see each of the properties as soon as possible. It usually took a few days and he was then able to take a look.

He typically looked at about twenty homes before he decided to pick one to buy. It usually took longer if he was looking at properties to flip because there was a host of other things to consider.

As he stepped out into the warm Miami sunshine he couldn’t help but smile. It had been a hectic week but every time he stepped into the golden Florida sun he was instantly rejuvenated. How could anyone feel anything but complete happiness under such beautiful weather?

He had grown up in the area and he could never imagine living anywhere else full time, although he had vacation homes in Costa Rica and in New York City. No matter how much you loved home it was always good to get away from everything for a while.

His car was in the front parking spot with two spaces on each side of the vehicle, which were off limits to everybody. He did not want to risk getting a dent or a scratch on any of his fine automobiles. Only Jay Leno had more cars than he did. He was an avid collector of classic cars as well as brand new ones. His current favorite was the new Lamborghini. He’d had the opportunity to drive the first one off the assembly line and he had bought it. As soon as he slid behind the
