Introduction

The haunting call of an owl broke the night’s stillness like the unsuspecting sound of thunder and crack of lightning splitting the dark clouds overhead. At their fireside in a deep canyon, a dozen or more Navajo Indians froze, paralyzed at the sound. The white archaeologist was astonished by the Indians’ statue-like appearance.

The owl hooted again. One of the Indians jumped to his feet and ran wildly into the dark brush. Some of the other Navajo rose to their feet glancing around the campsite as if expecting some horrible monster to leap out at them.
