Who Do You Think You Are?

'My Grandparents Loved Jungle Life'

A tiger pads softly through the long grass, following a bullock cart carrying children from school. The big cat coughs softly and one of the boys realises that they're being stalked, but he holds his nerve and the danger passes.

The boy on the cart that day was Lucy Rushton's father David, who was born in Burma (now Myanmar) in 1929. His recollections, and those of her grandparents, Albert Edward Rushton (known as Ted) and Elizabeth Lane, have inspired her love of family history.

Lucy lives in King's Lynn, Norfolk, and is an author. She cherishes memories of childhood holidays with her grandparents, who returned from the Far East to live in Cambridge. “We loved exploring their vicarage, a grand Edwardian house with a croquet lawn,” Lucy explains.

Ted was inspired by animated preachers at mass gatherings

It was a far cry from their home in Burma, where monkeys performed acrobatics (2023).
