About this ebook

This book contains three haunting ghost stories of mystery and intrigue, ghostly apparitions, lost loves, and waiting for help that never came. 1) “The Ghost of Baranof Castle” tells about ghostly sightings and apparitions of a beautiful young ghost. Was it one ghost that people were seeing? Or was it actually three ghosts? 2) “The Ghost of Emma Crawford,” another young ghost, is seen strolling the summit of Red Mountain with her handsome Indian spirit guide. How did this come to be? 3) “The Ghost of Shipman Park” returns again and again to his old cabin site, waiting for help that never came, until it was too late.

    The Ghosts of Baranof Castle

Alexander Andreyevich Baranof was governor of the Russian colony and leader of the Russian American Fur Company for twenty-seven years. He built the castle as a fortress after the massacre of 1802. The fortress overlooked the sea at New Archangel. The construction was started in 1806, and the castle was finished in 1809.

Near midnight in 1867, Army Chaplain J. A. Raynor was sound asleep in the northeast bedroom of Baranof Castle in Sitka, Alaska. A sudden chill brought his eyes open with expectancy and he pulled the covers tightly around his body. At the foot of his bed stood a beautiful young woman. A soft, pale, white glow surrounded her pretty head. She wore a powder-blue gown and a silver crown upon her yellow hair. In her hand she held a flickering candle. The chaplain, surprised at seeing her, stared in wonder. His mouth was open, but he was unable to speak. The ghostly apparition beckoned him to come. Dazed, he rose to follow her with a feeling of uncertainty, up the narrow winding stairs that led to a cupola on the roof. The dim light revealed an expression of extreme sadness on her pretty face.

From below a night watchman called. One o’clock. All is well.

At the sound of the night watchman’s voice the woman simply vanished into thin air. Feeling foolish for following the ghostly figure, the chaplain returned to bed. Sleep simply would not come. The chaplain lay awake for the rest of the night.

The next morning the chaplain spoke with Father Cramer about what had happened the night before. The priest, having been at the castle for many years, solemnly nodded his head.

    "Yes, my son.
