Chapter 1
Dena on her way to buy supplies heard the ambient sounds of people drinking and the winds blowing across her face sending chills through her body, nerves caused her to walk a fast pace, almost running. Sound of a gunshot rang out and laughter of the drunk men laughing and yelling at each other. The last words she will ever hear I can shoot closer to the squaw than you
. Dena never knew what hit her when the next shot from a 45/70 Lever action rifle shooting a 350-grain soft point blew the top of her head apart.
Steven Carson became concerned when his Dena did not return, it did not take him long to get the news from the brother of his wife (Helaku) they were from the Crow Indian Tribe that lived near his place in the mountains. Anger caused him to lose his breath, his knees started to buckle and he went down on one knee as he felt his life start to leave him.
Dena’s village was gathering with the elders to see what action needed to take place, Helaku said the time they decide it will be over
, Steven is on his way now and if anyone responsible for his sister’s death survives, he would be surprised. The Helaku tried to stop Steven but his rage did not allow him to listen.
Steven went to a secluded area of town where he had hidden 5-gallon containers of gas in case he ever had a need. Tonight, would be a night the townspeople will not soon forget. The moon did not appear, darkness surrounded the area. He guessed it was sometime in October, never bothered to check the calendar anymore, the temperature was close to freezing and yet sweat dripped from his forehead. He was determined to have the men who killed his wife pay and Helaku told him where the men would be. He did not care if they killed him, his life had no meaning without the love of his life.
He met Dena three years ago and he never knew how happy he could be until he met her, it was 2025 on a snow-capped mountain where they first met, he found her barely alive, he knew she was Crow and he lived not far from their village, he carried her to the village of the Crow. Her brother met him and thanked him for carrying her home and trying to save her life.
After Steven brought her back to the village, he checked on her every day, after a few days she regained her strength but Steven kept coming to check on her anyway. Soon Steven became a regular sight in the village, Dena liked having him around. The brother knew they loved each other and they would marry. They remained very much in love till the day she was killed.
They tried to have children but their wish never came true. They were in love with each other and often when they visited her village the people thought they acted like kids who experienced love for the first time, for both it was the first time of being in love. Often, they held hands and kissed each other.
Three years ago, there were only a few houses of white men in the town and they were good people and everyone got along.
One-year later the drunks had come destroying the peace they once had, killing the animals that everyone depended on for survival, wounding Deer and not tracking the blood trail and let the animals suffer and when they did make a kill often taking only some of the meat and not all of it. Or the hide and nothing else, it angered the Indians and Steven. Buffalo did not roam freely anymore and their numbers were few, Elk did better they stayed high in the mountains and it took to much work for the drunks to hunt them. Black Bear and grizzly which once roamed were hard to even find anymore. Coyotes and Bobcats were gone. The few Bears that remained kept out of site and often stayed high in the mountains or hid in the junipers.
They were destroying the land and everything on it.
When the drunks came, they brought a lot of weapons and ammo and booze. The supply house that an older couple ran who had the store a long time before the drunks arrived wish they never showed up. They did not help the community they destroyed it.
Steven waited till the drunks returned to their cabin, barely able to walk they were so drunk.
After he knew they would be passed out he started to pour gasoline around the cabin, soon the area had been drenched with gas and he lit a dried piece of pine and let it burn and used it as a torch to lite the gas, soon the fire engulfed the small cabin, smoke filled the cabin as men
