    Prologue

"Hey, Ronnie, have you heard of this new band that’s just

starting out?" My best friend, Nicole Parker said to me, bursting into my bedroom. She seemed to have a habit of turning up to my house without announcement. It even got to that stage, where we had keys made up for each other’s houses just because we visit each other’s so often.

Oh, I haven’t really introduced myself yet. I’m Veronica Ward, but I prefer to be called Ronnie. I am currently 11 years of age, and I live in Brookfield, Virginia. Not many people would know where it is, but it’s a small town in the South of Virginia. I really like it, as it’s got everything a town needs. Anyway, I have long, brown hair, which has slight waves in, and deep brown eyes. If you’re wondering about anything else, like favorite band, favorite color, any piercings, pets, anything… Well, here goes, I guess. I don’t currently have a favorite band, but as you can tell from Nicole’s bursting in, I may do soon… as long as they’re good. Favorite color, I would have to say is blue. I don’t know why; I guess because it’s just a nice color. I don’t really have a reason to like it. Piercings, I have just my lobes done. My mom took me last year to get them done. Also, pets, I don’t actually have any, as my dad is allergic to most pet hair. I guess that’s it about me, time to move on to my best friend; Nicole Parker. Now, as an 11-year-old, she is really pretty. She has straight, black hair, as well as really straight full bangs. She has gorgeous blue eyes, and I know when she grows up, she will be really pretty. We’ve been best friends since we were about 3. She’s more like a sister, and I know that we won’t ever stop being friends. Anyway, I guess it’s time to get back to the story, instead of who we are.

If I had heard of the band, why would I need you bursting into my house to announce it. I laughed. By the way, I love the outfit. I complimented after. She was wearing a beige ruffled shirt, along with her dark blue skinny jeans, and her brown sandals. Her hair; assuming her mom did it, was up in a cute bun, and had a head wrap on, and her normal diamond stud earrings. Whereas I looked terrible. I had my Minnie Mouse baggy shirt on, with black leggings, my heart earrings, hair in a messy ponytail and a ring on, which is… was mom’s.

Thanks. And you do have a good point as to why I’m coming here. The band’s name is Aftershock, and they’ve just got a Viewr page right now, but they seem to be blowing over social media right now, plus rumors that they are getting a record contract.

Let’s check them out then. I replied, before Nicole sat next to me, and got Viewr up. She went to her history page, before getting the video up. We then sat and watched it. Wow, they’re really good. I commented half way into the song.

There are loads of comments, including that the Riverdale music producer heard them and is definitely signing them up. Doesn’t sound like much of a rumor now.

They are going to blow up all across America.

Don’t just think of America. Think of the world. Come on, Ronnie. If they’re getting signed up, then they have to be good.

Yeah, it’s only rumors for now. I mean, I know you’ve just seen a comment that they’re definitely getting signed up, but you can’t be sure.

They’re rumors for now. I bet they’ll be huge by the time we’re 14, and we get a chance to meet them, and everything.

Dream bigger, I doubt it’ll happen.

Watch it happen in a few years, and then they can hear your incredible voice, and maybe get you signed up too, as you are incredible.

    Yeah, I’m no longer singing.

    Wait, what?

I lost someone I love, so I’m giving up something I love. Come on, Nikkie, we used to sing together, and now she’s gone, I’m not doing it anymore. It’s too upsetting for me to sing again.

Really? Ronnie, it’s been a week.

Yeah, and look how bad I am. I’ve not been in school, I’m staying up here all day, and I’m no longer singing, as well as not eating much. Face it, Nikkie. It’s not happening ever again.

    One day you’ll sing again.

Not gonna happen. Sorry, it’s over for my singing.

Okay, well I’ll hopefully see you in school on Monday. Nicole said, before walking out of my bedroom, quietly. After a few moments of silence, I heard the front door close, and that’s when the tears fell.

    ~ 3 Years Later ~

It was a hot, sunny Thursday afternoon in Brookfield, Virginia and it was the second to last day of the semester. I decided to come dressed in my purple butterfly print sleeveless shirt, along with my blue high-waist skinny jeans, and my black converse shoes. I also added a few accessories, such as my silver rose stud earrings, my 3-layer necklace, my sapphire heart gemstone ring and my baby pink Emporio Armani watch. I then brushed my long hair, and tied it into a quick ponytail for the day.

For 6th and 7th grade, they’ll be coming back into Mystic Falls Middle, whereas 8th graders are leaving, and going off to High School. I’m dying to get into my dream school, South Heights High School. Dad told me it's where he and mom first met, and it's where they ended up falling in love. Anyway, I was just sitting in my math class, talking to Nicole, when one of my other friends, Tammie came in. I guess she wasn't in class as she was handing out these brown envelopes.

Here's the pile of letters for you, Mrs. Green. Tammie told our teacher, Mrs. Green.

Thank you Tammie. I will hand these out when you get back, which will be when? Mrs. Green questioned.

I only have this pile to give to Mr. Houston down the hall, and I should be back.

So, can you wait for this summer? I asked Nicole.

No. I just want to get into high school already.

I know. I really want to know what school I get into.

Same. I hope we both get accepted into South Heights; that’ll be really cool. Nicole told me, as Tammie came in and sat down. At which point, Mrs. Green got up, and started handing out the brown envelopes.

Now, in these envelopes are letters to inform you about the high schools that you will be attending next semester.

When I got mine, I opened it carefully. Then I started pulling it out, slowly. When I noticed the bright red South Heights High School logo, I practically ripped the letter out. I then read the letter slowly:

    South Heights High School

    492 Auburn Mountain Ave

    May 14th 2009

Congratulations on completing a milestone in your life and embarking on a new stage in your education.

    With best wishes and regards

    Mr. Richard Carter

    Principal

    South Heights High School

I smiled as soon as I read it. I actually got in! Dad would be so proud of me, and I definitely know a certain someone who would also be proud of me for getting accepted in this school, and now it's time to find out whom I'll be going to high school with, Hey, Tammie. What high school did you get into? I asked.

South Heights High. How about you?

South Heights too. At least I'll know someone there. I replied with a giggle.

Nicole, can I have a quick word with you outside? Also, would you mind bringing your envelope with you? Mrs. Green asked.

Sure. Nicole said, sadly, her envelope still closed. I was wondering why Nicole had to go outside with her envelope, and at the same time, a little confused. Either way, she came back in about five minutes later, with her envelope open.

So, what high school did you get accepted into? I asked Nicole, noticing the open envelope in her hands.

I don't want to tell you, because you will be disappointed. She replied, no eye contact. This confused me, as the girl tells me everything.

Why? If you're not in South Heights, I won't mind. I mean, I still see Ashley, and he goes to Westwright Middle, doesn’t he?

You got into South Heights. That's great Ron-

Yeah, but that's not important right now. The important thing is you're not telling me what school you got accepted into.

I'll tell you tomorrow... I promise. She hesitated.

Alright. I said, giving up hope. I knew I wasn't going to get an answer out of her today. As I finished saying this, the bell went signaling the end of the day. We all walked to put our books in our lockers, and went outside, just as Nicole's dad, Michael drove up.

Hey, girls. Do you want a lift at all? Michael asked us.

No. I'm just about to meet up with Ashley to walk me home. Thanks, anyway, Michael. I replied, politely.

And I recently moved down the road, so it's not too far to walk it, so I’m alright for a lift, thanks. Tammie said, afterwards.

Okay, well I'll see you girls around, then. Michael finally said, before driving off with Nicole sat next to him frowning. This really worried me, as I didn't even know what was up with her. I let it go, and walked out of the school gates, and finally saw him... Ashley Burton, my elementary school best friend.

Hey, Ashley. I said, hugging him.

Hey, Ronnie. He replied, hugging me back, before he broke away. He politely took my bag, and we started walking home.

So, how was your day? I asked, breaking the couple of minutes’ silence.

It was okay. How was yours?

    Yeah, it was great thanks.

So, how's Nicole doing? I haven’t heard from her in a while.

I wish I knew. She knows something, and she's not telling me what it is. I replied, worryingly.

Oh, well have you got any hints on what it is?

Nope. She said she would tell me tomorrow. I mean, I just hope she does, because it's the last day of the semester before the summer break, and if it’s really important that she has to tell me before the end of the semester, then i will need to know. Tomorrow. I said back.

For the last six minutes of walking back to mine, we were talking about our plans for this summer. then we finally arrived at my beautiful house.

And it looks like James got home from work early today. Ashley said, pointing out dad's car.

"Yeah. He finished work early for the summer now, so I guess he got to go home early, but he's mainly finished, because we're either going to Arizona or Washington in a few weeks, but he refuses to tell me where yet. He always tells me 'That's for me to know, and you to find out.' So I cannot know, yet."

Well as long as you have fun, that's the main thing. Ashley replied, looking deeply into my eyes.

Okay... Well, I'd better get going in now.

    Yeah, okay.

    Speak online? I asked.

Sure. Ashley replied, before giving me a kiss on the cheek, and he then started to walk to his house. That was the first time Ashley did something like that; kissing me on the cheek, I mean. As I walked in, I could smell something nice. I guess it was just dinner. But at 2.58... Something was up with him cooking dinner this early, but I didn’t think anything bad by it. Dad just probably wanted
