About this ebook

With her husband out of prison and her life finally starting to make sense, Gina has one more shock to deal with. On the day comes home, Lara phones with news that will change the lives of everybody involved.

A taste of what's to come:

"It’s just me,” Laurie hugged me and kissed me on the cheek. “And my mum and dad. I hope you don’t mind.”
“That’s fine. Where are they?”
“They’re in the car. Mum didn’t want to spoil my homecoming by being in the way and dad wanted to finish listening to the piece of music on the radio.”
“What was it?”
“Hell knows,” Laurie laughed. “Something by Bach or Purcell, I think—one of the Baroque composers anyway.”
“You’re into classical music now?”
“You’re into cricket?” he asked, nodding toward the cricket bat. “That’s a surprise for somebody who once said that hell would have had to, and I quote, ‘not only freeze over but to be flash-frozen in liquid nitrogen and then smashed with a hammer for good measure’ before she even considered watching it.”

It was a strangely warm October afternoon and Jamie and Silas were tearing around the garden on their bikes. Erik had put in a path that they were happily using as a racetrack. Erik was on the lounger reading a magazine about sailboats and I was setting on the edge of the patio watching the boys. Jamie raced around the last corner of their track and then stopped abruptly, causing Silas to crash into the back of him and they both crashed to the floor in tears. I got to my feet and walked over to them, picking them up and checking for broken bones—they insisted on me checking for broken bones every time they fell down. Apparently, one of their friends had a cast on his arm on their first day back at school after the holidays and they had become quite stuck on the idea of getting casts of their own. Jamie lashed out at Silas for crashing into him and Silas smacked him back for stopping so suddenly. I managed to pry them apart and kept them at arm’s length, both of them staring at the other with their nostrils flaring and anger in their five-year-old eyes. I turned to Jamie and asked him why he had stopped so suddenly but he shook his head and clamped his mouth shut. I told him he wasn’t in trouble and he leaned in close beside me to whisper in my ear, There’s a stranger in the house, Mummy.

Erik kept the boys in the garden while I went inside. I grabbed Erik’s cricket bat from by the back door where he had left it and walked through the kitchen, noticing that my favourite mug had moved from the table to the kitchen sink. There were footsteps in the living room, so I headed through with the cricket bat raised to strike. I pushed open the door and sighed with relief. Thank God it’s you, Laurie, I sighed, propping the door open with the cricket bat and rushing over to him. Jamie said he saw a stranger in the house and I was worried someone had broken in.

No, it’s just me, Laurie hugged me and kissed me on the cheek. And my mum and dad. I hope you don’t mind.
